by Mike Merolle Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. Comsewogue 3, East Hampton 2 WP: Carson mccaffrey Kevin Schnupp: 1-3 HR Joe Perri 2-3 2 Singles Matt Nowlan throw out at plate to win game pic.twitter.com/i13tMOM2cn — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 24, 2023 It was a playoff season in 2023 for Comsewogue as the team finished 11-9 in their league but 0-2 in the playoffs. East Hampton officially ended their season after defeating Comsewogue in the loser’s bracket elimination game. Head coach Joe Caltagirone is entering his eighth season as the Comsewogue manager and will look for an improving year in 2024. Caltagirone is returning 11 seniors this year. As of now, eight of them are committed to playing college baseball in the next year. Caltagirone is excited about the impact and leadership the seniors will provide. They had 5 All-League players and only one, James Genovese, graduated. “Last season, they all gained valuable playoff experience and all had some impact on winning. This season, I am expecting them to take the next step as a team [to] win a playoff game and make some noise in the AA bracket,” Caltagirone told Axcess Baseball. “I feel the core guys know what I expect of them. Lead by example and not settle for just being good, strive to get better every day. If they have that mentality, good things will happen.” Some of the core guys include three four-year varsity seniors. Kevin Schnupp Jr. plays catcher and is committed to UMass-Amherst. He was named All-County last season after sporting a .367 AVG, .450 OBP, .616 SLG, 1.066 OPS, 4 HRs, 18 RBIs, 10 stolen bases and threw out 11 of 24 attempted base stealers. Matt Nowlan is a key bat in the middle of the order and is committed to Molloy University. Nowlan was named All-League in 2023 after batting .355 with .532 SLG, 1.070 OPS, 3 HRs, 19 RBIs and 19 runs scored. Nick Zampieron is excellent defensively and a spark plug atop the lineup. He is committed to Stony Brook University. Zampieron will play SS and pitch this season. He was All-League in 2023 after batting .420 with a .524 OBP, 1.060 OPS, scored 29 runs, stole 24 bases, 1 HR, 9 RBIs. On the mound, he was 1-0 with a 2.87 ERA with 20 Ks and converted all 3 of his save opportunities. Some shots from today’s CatcherMTRX clinic in Ronkonkoma UMASS-commit Kevin Schnupp Jr (Comsewogue 2024) showing a strong and accurate arm in the video pic.twitter.com/PNkHgSNOzI — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) January 6, 2024 “I expect them to perform up to their abilities and exceed expectations because all three have superior work ethics. Each is different in their own way but their goals align. They are catalysts for our lineup and all have the ability to impact the game in multiple ways,” said Caltagirone. Another impact player is senior LHP Carson McCaffrey. The southpaw pitcher is a three-year varsity player and has proven to be one of the toughest lefties to hit against in the county. He was hard luck 2-4 on the mound but with a 3.83 ERA and struck out 48 batters over 39.1 innings. McCaffrey will have the game one assignment each week according to Caltagirone. McCaffrey is committed to SUNY New Paltz. At the plate, he homered twice and drove in 12 runs. Other key members of the Comsewogue pitching staff are seniors CJ Cubano, Anthony Manetta, and Joe Virga. Caltagirone has seen improvement in the three arms over the past season. Manetta is a two-way threat with sneaky pop, great speed on the bases, and gold glove defense in the outfield. Manetta was All-League, he batted .409 with 1.140 OPS, he hit 2 homers, drove in 22 runs and stole 13 bases. Junior Joe Perri had a great second varsity season. The catcher and third baseman hit .333 with a .770 OPS and 18 RBIs. Senior Vinny Perri is committed to SUNY Brockport. College Coaches! 2025 Catcher, Joe Perri (Comsewogue HS).. Joe is a plus defender with a strong and accurate arm. Very High Baseball IQ. Steady offensive player with gap to gap abilities. Gamer!!! Good student! @axcessbaseball #TitanNation pic.twitter.com/f3kLCVEKxJ — Titans (@TitansBsb) January 20, 2024 Caltagirone’s main concern is the team’s health and pitching depth. “We graduated our team leader in wins and ERA and will look to fill his spot as well as the high-leverage spots that tend to pop up late in games. We also have a few players coming off injuries from other sports that need to round back into form,” he said. Comsewogue’s biggest strength is the roster’s varsity experience and versatility. “Top to bottom, our order is versatile and can impact the game in many ways. Also, we are a top fielding team with multiple players capable of playing multiple positions at a high level,” said Caltagirone. Comsewogue will open their 2024 league schedule on the road at Bellport on March 25.

by Andy Smith Comsewogue 3, East Islip 1 WP: Carson McCaffrey (CG, 1-hitter). He has allowed 3 hits through 3 starts Matt Nowlan: 2 solo home runs — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 13, 2022 Last season, Comsewogue finished just two games under .500, and two games out of a playoff berth despite sporting a young roster. Head Coach Joe Caltagirone reflected on the difficulties his team faced, and how his team responded and grew. “Last season we were a very young but a very competitive team. The players grew as the season went on and we won our last series, taking 2 out of 3 from Hills West, knocking them out of the playoffs.” Caltagirone, who played college baseball for St. Joseph University LI was a varsity assistant and middle school coach before being named head coach of the Warriors in 2016. He believes that the final series of last season served as a great way for this team to finish on a high note, and use that late season success to build upon for this year. Being a young team does have an advantage. The experience that these players earned, and the large number of returning players will be a key for Comsewogue this season. The Warriors will be returning eight players who started over ten games each last season. That experience and game action is so important for a young team. Coach Caltagirone highlighted the strength that having this pitching depth provides. Caltagirone expressed, “All of our pitchers return from last season’s team: senior James Genovese and juniors Carson McCaffrey, Nick Zampieron, Matt Nowlan, Anthony Manetta, Jake Sokolowski, and Joe Virga all saw some meaningful innings.” Matt Nowlan (Comsewogue 2024) sitting 78-79. Zampieron had an average of .406 and .916 OPS and swiped twenty bags. Kevin Schnupp Jr (Comsewogue 2024) pic.twitter.com/nDQvSrZum9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 5, 2022 The two backstops this season will be junior catcher Kevin Schnupp, a three-year varsity starter and an All-League qualifier, and sophomore Joe Perri. Perri will also see time in the infield when he isn’t behind the plate. Schnupp, an excellent defender behind the plate, had a .989 fielding percentage and a 50 percent success rate in throwing out base stealers. Other position players such as Matt Nowlan (a .340 average with an OPS of .991 last season), Carson McCaffrey, Anthony Manetta, and James Genovese will look to continue their improvement from the previous season. This group will look to make an impact both on the mound and in the batter’s box. While the team has many returning players, the Warriors will be entering the 2023 season without recent graduate and All-League player, Chris Velazquez. Velazquez played first base and in the outfield during his time at Comsewogue. Velazquez had a very high OPS of .996 and 17 RBIs. Caltagirone also reflected on that state of the team in comparison to other teams in their league. “We should be very competitive as I look at the experience gained on varsity last season and desire to be a playoff team to be our catalyst this season.” Coach Caltagirone highlighted second base and the outfield as potential locations where position battles will take place. However, he added that he is not looking to call up any freshmen during this season. Comsewogue opens their season on March 27th against Sayville.

“We should be very competitive as I look at the experience gained on varsity last season and desire to be a playoff team to be our catalyst this season.”

Coach Caltagirone highlighted second base and the outfield as potential locations where position battles will take place. However, he added that he is not looking to call up any freshmen during this season.

Comsewogue opens their season on March 27th against Sayville.

by Gabe Zoda After the game we spoke to Dalton Rutt after his dominant performance on the mound (3.1IP, 6Ks, 0ER) pic.twitter.com/G443Piw0xp — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 6, 2021 Imagine being 15 years old and being able to play baseball at a professional baseball stadium. That is exactly what the Body Armor Titans and Next Level Baseball were able to do while playing in the LI Boys of Summer 15u National Division. They faced off in what was sure to be a good game and when you are in Ducks Stadium, you are guaranteed “Good Times Every Time”. The Body Armor Titans would end up soaring above their competition by winning by the score of 5-1. They would start the scoring early as they scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the 1st. This “quack” attack, or quick attack, started with Nick Zampieron. He gave the Titans the game’s first hit when he singled. He would then use his speed in a couple ways on the basepaths. First, he got himself into scoring position pretty quickly when he stole 2nd base. Then, came into score rather quickly on the next batter. Tyler Cook would be the one to drive in Zampieron. He would do this by launching a ball over the center fielder’s head. That allowed Nick to easily score and it also gave the Titans a 1-0 lead over their Opponents. In the 3rd inning though, Next Level Baseball would get their equalizer. They did this in a different style than the Titans did, they worked counts and did a really good job getting walks. In this 3rd inning in fact, the first two Next Level Baseball players would walk to start off the inning. Those players were Mike D’Angelo and Matthew Reiter. It wasn’t all walks though as the next batter was able to get on base a different way. Garrett Gates, who was also the starting pitcher, got up to plate in this 3rd inning and made the most of this AB. His intentions were clear as soon as he stepped up to the plate – he was going to bunt. First pitch, he squared up but sent it foul. Second pitch was a little different as he laid down a very good bunt to the 3rd base side that allowed everyone to be safe and to load the bases. Tommy Pasqua took advantage of this bases loaded situation and worked a quality walk that would bring in D’Angelo and tie up the ballgame at 1. After the Titans would give up that run, they would go to their bullpen. They chose to give the ball to Dalton Rutt, who would be the perfect choice. He would get out of the bases loaded jam with a pop out and a strikeout. That tie ballgame wouldn’t last for too long as the TItans would take the lead right back in the bottom of the 4th inning. They scored 2 in this inning and increased their lead to 3-1. In common fashion, the Titans did this quickly and it would start with Peter Beisel. He would leadoff the inning by working himself a walk. A couple of batters later, P.J. Nenadick would drive him in with a line drive 2B down the 3rd base line but they weren’t done there. Dan Rubin would ground a ball to the SS right after that should’ve been an out but the throw was offline. This error allowed P.J. Nenadick scored from 2nd since his head was on a swivel the entire time. As soon as he saw the play wasn’t going to be made, he was off to the races and was able to get in before Next Level could stop him. Dalton Rutt completely shut down this Next Level team. In the 4th and 5th inning, he faced 7 batters and only allowed one base runner. Other than that, he retired every other batter he saw yesterday, which included 5 strikeouts. Dalton Rutt has been on FIRE tonight. He’s faced 8 batter so far and has struck out 6 of them. Titans stay up 3-1 as we go into the bottom of the 5th. pic.twitter.com/y0FEbESJI7 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 6, 2021 If you include his .2 innings in the 3rd, Dalton had a complete line of (2.1 IP, 6ks, 0ER, 1BB). He featured his fastball, which was a reliable strike at all times. Then, he went to the curveball to secure strikeouts, which was an effective strategy seen by his 6ks. The game would end during the bottom of the 5th due to the time limitations. The TItans would end the game with one last punch and scored 2 runs right before they had to end it. Jack Fanning started things off with a single and then stole 2nd to land him on 2nd base. Nick Zampieron then followed him up with a single of his own and stole 2nd to make it a 2nd and 3rd situation with 1 out. Peter Beisel would end the game with a grounder that should have actually ended the game but due to another error, that error turned into 2 more runs as Zampieron and Fanning would both come into score to make the final score 5-1 in favor of the Body Armor Titans. With that win, the Body Armor Titans moved to 15-1-1 and continued their dominant play this summer. They look to continue their dominance against the Bonnie Bees 15U on August 7th.
