David Aufiero: Why I Chose Sacred Heart

(Editor’s Note: David Aufiero is one of the top pitchers on the island. The hard-throwing RHP just finished up an outstanding season for the North Shore Vikings in which he went 7-1 with a 1.14 ERA over 49 IP. He allowed only 30 hits and 14 BB while fanning 67 batters which is good for a 0.90 WHIP. He fired 7 CGs and faced 5 All-County pitchers along the way. Among his victories were two complete game shutouts (one one-hitter and a two-hitter). In the postseason, he fired two complete games; against Mepham and Seaford. He did yield more than two runs in any start and he allowed just two successful stolen base attempts in four tries while also picking off two runners from first base. He recently committed to Sacred Heart, where his brother Matt (Chaminade 2017) plays. The following wo...

Matt Pelcher Commits to Hofstra

The trend continues of Hofstra University becoming a hot-spot for elite prospects on Long Island. Catcher Matt Pelcher (Calhoun 2020) announced his verbal commitment to the Pride, joining fellow LI top players such as Jimmy Joyce, Anthony D’Onofrio, Mark Faello, Brad Camarda, James Cardinale and William Kennedy. He becomes the fourth 2020 graduate on the island to announce his verbal commitments (Joe Wozny; UCONN, Travis Honeyman; Boston College, Johnny Castagnozzi; North Carolina). Pelcher has been in the limelight since eighth grade, when he was called up to varsity to be the starting catcher for Calhoun. He did a commendable job, batting .286 and handling a very talented pitching staff led by Dylan Hughes and Jake Garguilo. We wrote a feature story on him directly following the se...

Recap of Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament

Walk off hit gives Team Citius the championship 2-1 ! pic.twitter.com/m4tfxEvrVw — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 16, 2017 The 11th annual Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament was a tremendous success. The two champions were Long Island Baseball and Team Citius. I bounced back-and-forth monitoring both games tonight. LIB put on a great offensive showing, defeating LI Storm by the score of 9-5, while Team Citius defeated Next Level Baseball 2-1 on a walk off hit by Adam Conte. Here are some other of my takeaways from the weekend: On Friday, Next Level defeated Motus Academy 4-1 behind a stellar performance by Ryan Martin (St. Francis Prep 2019) on the mound and another great offensive game from Aidan Larkin (Chaminade 2019). They played a clean game with strong defense an...

Next Level Baseball Takes First Two Games of Tournament

Final: Next Level 4, Cangelosi Sparks 2 WP: Ryan Martin pic.twitter.com/oZMbw6KlOK — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 6, 2017 Strong pitching, great defense and a red-hot bat of Aidan Larkin (Chaminade 2019) was the key to a pair of victories today for Next Level Baseball. Game One Pat Cullinan got the start, but struggled with his command and was lifted with the game tied 1-1 with bases loaded and one out in the third inning. William Kennedy (Smithtown East 2019) came on in relief and put out the fire in a big way. He fanned the cleanup batter and induced an infield pop out from the following hitter. Next Level wasted no time taking the lead in the top of the fourth when Kennedy walked and stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Larkin hit a sac fly to medium-ran...
