It was a banner year for Newfield in 2018. After a long playoff drought of 13 years, the Wolverines were able to overcome the negativity of their near-misses and put it together for a 15-win season. That pitching staff was among the most impressive units assembled on Long Island. With three Division-I pitchers (Kyle Johnson, Bobby Vath, Ryan Wappaus), they were able to trot out a quality arm in every game of a series. In addition to that, the staff was deemed even more impressive with the commitment of Chandler Giovinco to Hofstra and the flurry of interest that Dylan Johnson has generated among high-end schools. When it’s all said and done, we will look back at a 2018 Newfield team that boasted five Division-I arms on one staff. Despite that, it was a quick postseason exit due to a ...
With the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers capturing the Game 163 tie-breakers, the 2018 MLB Postseason is officially set. It will begin on Tuesday with the NL Wild Card match up between the Chicago Cubs and the visiting Colorado Rockies. The winner will face the Brewers on Friday in Milwaukee. The Yankees will host the surprising Oakland Athletics in a win-or-go-home with the winner taking on the 108-win Boston Red Sox on Friday. We took to Instagram to capture predictions of the local ballplayers. Below are some of their responses. Richie Cimpric- Cleveland Indians “They have the energy plus they have one of the best infields with Donaldson, Lindor, Ramirez and Encarnacion.” Dom Camera-Boston Red Sox “The Red Sox are way too stacked with offense this year and th...
The Long Island Titans made quick work of LI Baseball, winning 12-0 in a mercy rule shortened three inning game. Coach Eric Joyner said that his team was focused on “having a good approach with two strikes, moving runners over, and having productive outs” adding that “we were able to put the ball in the gap, we ran the bases well, and stole some bases when we had the opportunity”. He went on to further say “when you do all the little things well, everything comes together”. The Titans sent Jimmy Mahoney to the mound, and it was somewhat of a shaky start for him. He gave up a leadoff single, followed up by a walk. He then got the next batter to weakly line out. With one out, both base runners stole, putting themselves in scoring position. However, Mahoney worked his way out of trouble with ...
Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Joey Savino who fired a 2-hit shutout over Newfield in a 3-0 victory. He needed only 75 pitches. They will face Bay Shore tomorrow #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/kTvsHkthLo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2018 Newfield had a 15-win regular season but ran into a buzzsaw today and it was junior RHP Joey Savino. The hard-throwing 6’3″ RHP was lights-out from the first pitch of the game until his 75th and final pitch of the game. He allowed just a single in the second and another in the sixth as No. 9 Connetquot advances in the winner’s bracket over No. 8 Newfield. Savino said it “felt great” but deferred praise to his teammates noting the “defense was awesome and the hitting was awesome,” adding that ...
Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is winning pitcher Kyle Johnson. He allowed only two hits and struck out 5 batters #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/tPdfnquykC Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 20, 2018 In 2005, Kyle Johnson was five-years-old. That was the last time the Newfield Wolverines competed in a playoff game. Today, the Stony Brook-commit pitched like he has been waiting 13 years to make the playoffs. The past two years were fresh in their memory all winter as they came just one win away from a postseason berth in ’16 and two wins last season. In 2018, however, they won the necessary 10 games within the first 11 games. “It feels awesome,” he said following the game. “We are going to enjoy this today–it’s been 13 years–but tom...
We are roughly halfway through the 2018 high school season here on Long Island which means enough stats have been accrued that we can accurately identify most of the top performers from this season. I try to avoid these articles because there’s no way I can pinpoint every top performer with 100 percent certainty, but I feel good enough to hand out some hardware nonetheless. I’m proud to say the leading candidates for both of the major Suffolk County Awards, Carl Yastrzemski Award and Paul Gibson Award, were in my preseason articles so I don’t completely feel like a jinx. Without further ado, here’s my best guess for who takes home these awards in the summer. Class AA Coach of the Mid-Year Ryan McSherry, Longwood Honorable Mention: Tom Migliozzi, Hills West Class A C...
Today was a day players have had circled on their calendar for months. I know I was the type to circle March 30 once the schedule was announced during my playing days. After seeing the level of excitement on the player’s faces and the huge turnout, I think there’s plenty more people that share that passion for the game as me. It was a unique Opening Day in that so many fields were unplayable that Moriches Complex featured four games. It was a huge benefit for me considering two of Long Island’s top arms in Bobby Vath and Roman Dorosh were both on the mound at the same time. Both were among my top candidates for the Paul Gibson Award and they both were lights-out in their first outing. It made for must-see action. I’ll give you my takeaways from those two games as we...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzgwiNN5tq8&t=72s We’ve given you the top players, now it’s time for the top teams. Last season, Commack broke a 20-year drought and captured the Suffolk County Class AA county championship.Considering their litany of arms, it was no surprise and I was correct in my preseason prediction of that. They graduated their top three starting pitchers, but they still are loaded. They will have plenty of competition this year as teams will be coming for their crown. Below is the top five Class AA teams in Suffolk County based on my opinions and observations. I look forward to your criticism and tweets. Enjoy– Ward Melville (2017 Record: 20-5) League I is going to be extremely competitive yet again this year. With the emergence of Sachem East and...
I attended the joint workout between Rocky Point and Newfield at Stony Brook University and here are some observations from it: Rob Milopsky is a Div-I pitcher in my opinion. He does a number of things that jump out at me. First of all, he has extremely fluid mechanics. It looks like he is having a catch, but once he ramped up his effort he was sitting 85 and he touched 87 MPH. Additionally, he throws a very good slider that is a weapon. Last year, he pitched only briefly at the varsity level due to the upperclassmen that were in the rotation. Still, Coach Aschettino stated that he has already faced the most pressure-packed situation that he can possibly face–coming in with the bases loaded in the eighth inning against Brock Murtha with a one-run lead. He passed that test with flying...
With the calendar flipping to 2018, all eyes are on the upcoming baseball season. Despite the bitter cold in the beginning part of the season, it was another enjoyable season in 2017. We will go through some of the major story lines to watch in 2018… Who is MLB Draft worthy? Despite several players garnering interest late into the season, the only high school Long Island players that got drafted were Ben Brown and Brian Morrell. This was surprising to me considering some other players getting looks from Major League scouts. We will cover this topic more in depth in the next week or so, but I’ll give you four players that have my attention–Franklin Parra, Anthony Fontana, Logan O’Hoppe and Mark Faello. Next year will be interesting with Tim McHugh, Jason Diaz and Max...
