The game of baseball is littered with stories of players that peaked at a young age and gradually fizzled out as their peers caught up with their size and ultimately were never the same. It is a breath of fresh air when a player is the inverse of that, somebody that was constantly overlooked and always outworked the competition. Big Congratulations to 2021 Titan, Nick Roselli on being drafted in the 11th round by the New York Mets! Nick is a kid that never gets out worked. He truly deserved this! Go crush it at the Pro Level!! @nickroselli2021 @axcessbaseball #TitanNation pic.twitter.com/m2HrksJCsn — Titans (@TitansBsb) July 16, 2024 Enter Nick Roselli. I first watched him play at Sal Agostinelli’s Northeast Elite when he hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 9th at Baseball Hea...
It is never a bad thing when there’s two competitive baseball teams in New York. You can count on one hand how many times that’s actually happened. It was looking like that in 2021 – right into the July 31 trade deadline but the walls eventually caved in and they finished a distant third behind Atlanta and Philadelphia in the NL East. It has been a rollercoaster 12 months for the Mets since Steve Cohen took over as owner. Fans had initially thought they would attract a highly-regarded executive such as Theo Epstein or David Stearns to run the show and success would immediately follow. Things don’t always work like that in pro sports, though. Sometimes it can be a long, windy road. The Mets were unable to attract the executives that they had hoped – for a varie...

by Jasper Abrahams Dodgers Super Team The reigning World Series Champions Los Angeles Dodgers come into the 2021 season eager to repeat and ready to defend their title. Locked and loaded with an array of weapons, the “super team” Dodgers went out and landed the most prized pitcher in the free agent market: Cy Young award winner Trevor Bauer. Bauer, 30, is coming off an incredible season where he finished with a 5-4 record, 73.0 IP, 100 K and a 1.73 ERA. Signing a three-year, $102 million deal this offseason, Bauer isn’t even expected to be the ace in this rotation, which is led by Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. Julio Urias and David Price are both able to provide quality innings throughout the rotation. In the bullpen, Los Angeles is equipped with top-tier arms. Kenley Jansen enters h...
New York Mets fans have waited for this day for a long time. In terms of generating excitement, I look back on the Yoenis Cespedes trade on July 29, 2015 and the Johan Santana trade on January 29, 2008 as the gold standards for acquisitions in this century for the Mets. Prior to that, there was obviously Mike Piazza in May of 1998 and Gary Carter in December 1984. But for young Mets fans, this is as good as it gets. Acquiring an actual superstar, in his prime, and not an over-the-hill player such as Jason Bay or Robinson Cano is something that every die-hard fan can get behind. Additionally, they acquired a legitimate No. 2 pitcher in Carlos Carrasco, who will immediately slot behind all-world pitcher Jacob deGrom atop the Mets’ rotation. It was significant to include him as the Mets...
(Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared in November 2019. Justin Dunn pitched well in 2020, compiling a record of 4-1 with a 4.34 ERA over 45.2 IP. He struck out 38 batters.) (Photo Credit: Getty Images) When you’ve been doubted since age-14, you develop some thick skin. Freeport-native Justin Dunn has developed that and then some over the years, as he carved a path for himself from the football-rich town of Freeport, NY all the way to his Major League debut with the Seattle Mariners on September 12, 2019. When Justin was a freshman in high school, his parents made the decision to send him to rural Connecticut to The Gunnery School, a college-preparatory school for high school aged kids, which Justin described as essentially college for 14-year-olds. His father, who is the ...
And this seals it. A historic day for the New York Mets. On the eve of free agency beginning, they now have the richest owner in baseball — by a significant margin — and Steve Cohen is intent on building the East Coast version of the Los Angeles Dodgers, an total juggernaut. https://t.co/jObjuob4Yn — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 30, 2020 Make no mistake: today is the most significant day in Mets history since October 25, 1986. Mets fans will mark down October 30, 2020 as a turning point, a new chapter. No longer will they be a laughingstock of the league. Many people have grown accustomed to the #LOLMETS hashtag and the inevitable ineptitude following the team – even in the so-called good years. For every moment of prosperity, there had been a Kenny Rogers ball 4, a ...
Photo Credit: Demetrius Freeman/The New York Times The week before I started high school, the Mets went on a west coast trip. They went to Arizona and pulled off a 4-game sweep to reach a high-watermark of eight games over .500 for the season. While it was a far cry from a World Series parade, it certainly felt like it for a team that began the season 0-5 and struggled to find their groove for the first 4 months of the season. A major reason for that hot streak was the play of 22-year-old rookie David Wright. The young third baseman wound up being named Player of the Week, which coincided with reinvigorating the team’s fan base. Wright was far from the most accomplished player on a team that featured future Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez and Mike Piazza as well as 9x All Star Carlos B...
(Editor’s Note: I was planning on taking the week off from blogging but I got the news about the trade and that scrapped my plan. So I write this somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean on my way to the Bahamas). The New York Mets surprised all of baseball by acquiring Toronto Blue Jays ace Marcus Stroman on Sunday evening. The deal comes with the July 31 trade deadline looming and many of the top World Series contending teams looking to acquire front-of-the-rotation pitchers. The Mets–who have an 11.2 percent chance of making the postseason–are not one of those contenders. While there is something to be said about a GM unafraid to pull the trigger on a deal, Mets’ GM Brodie Van Wagenen‘s credibility with the fanbase is all but depleted after the ill-fated Robinson C...
(Photo Credit: NYIT Athletics) The NYIT baseball team was treated to a nice surprise this morning when 14-year MLB veteran and New York Mets legend David Wright made an appearance at practice. He spoke to the team and also did an interview with SNY. David Wright’s motivational words to the @NYITBears ? pic.twitter.com/zc0OBLutg8 — SNY (@SNYtv) January 25, 2019 David spoke of the importance of getting your work in when nobody is watching or telling you what to do, he also spoke about finding the motivation to work regardless of the weather conditions, which he feels is a major reason he was able to get to the big leagues and find success as a corner infielder that is 6’0″ and roughly 205 lbs despite obvious size disadvantages from guys like Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and ...
Young Long Island ballplayers will have a unique opportunity next Monday, January 21 at Batting 1.000 indoor facility in Freeport. 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros Pitching Coach Brent Strom and former Mets’ All-Star and current Brooklyn Cyclones Manager Edgardo Alfonzo will host a Pro Camp Day. Strom is widely regarded as one of the top pitching coaches in Major League Baseball for his work on young and veteran pitchers with the Astros since 2014, which has coincided with their turnaround from bottom-feeder to World Series Champions. He has helped ushered in a new era of pitchers, who focus not just on the hitters weakness but their strength. Pitchers like Justin Verlander, who was considered on the downside of his career, have been able to revitalize their career. Another ...
