Recap of Week 6 of the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra

This was the sixth and final week of the 2019 New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. Another successful year in the books for one of the top baseball academies in the nation, according to Baseball America. I had the opportunity to spend some time there this week. Danny Bethea, assistant coach at St. John’s University, was working with the young ballplayers at the hitting center. I had the chance to speak with him after about his famous home run in the 2012 Regionals against North Carolina, his time in the minor leagues with the Boston Red Sox and his transition from behind the dish to the mound. View this post on Instagram In 2012, Bethea hit one of the biggest home runs in St. John's history, a walk-off 3-R shot in the bottom of the ninth to defeat North Carolina and s...

Recap of Week 2 of the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra

Today concluded the second week of the famous New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. The campus was packed with young ballplayers as their parents watched as spectators for their “World Series”, which is most important day of the week as the teams square off in a fun but competitive game. As I walked around each field, it was amazing how engaged the players were in their games. Three of the games ended in walk-off fashion, which made the action even more compelling. Following the completion of the games, the players/parents gathered in the Hofstra Bubble for the award ceremony. Players were honored for their accomplishments this week including the Cy Young, Silver Slugger, Golden Spikes, Gold Glove, World Series MVP, Best Catcher, Super Hustler and the Axcess Player o...

Recap of Week 5 of the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra

Today concludes Week 5 of the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra. I was there on Monday and I was going around from field-to-field taking some pictures/videos/notes. The first thing you noticed is the structure. Each field has nonstop action–whether it be teaching or game action. It truly is an academy and not simply a summer camp. Now in its 42nd year, that has been consistent over the 4 decades. The Axcess Baseball Player of the Week was Ivan Epps of Group 6. Above he is pictured with Coach Hector Duprey (left) and NYBA Director (John Russo). Ivan possesses incredible power for such a young player. He turned heads all week, and I even recall coaching him at the camp two years ago and getting the sense this kid had an incredibly bright future ahead of him. He is certainly a player...
