However, with plenty of talent returning, the Mustangs are primed to make it back to the playoffs in 2025. “We went 9-11 and missed the playoffs by one game.” Pembroke said. “We started off 1-10 in a very tough league with an inexperienced team, especially on the mound. We caught fire and rattled off eight wins in a row. We lost our last game of the year that if we had won we would have gotten in. But I think it’s motivating, you felt that frustration and disappointment and now you use that as motivation to make it a better year this year.” Of the eight graduating seniors last year, two are playing in college. Jameson Riegel is pitching at the college of St. Elizabeth and Andrew Yanez who is at Queens College. While eight seniors is a large graduating class, the Mustangs are graduating 13 this season. While last season’s team was inexperienced, this season comes in with plenty of varsity innings under their belt. For the Mount Sinai pitching staff, there will be three returners who pitched big innings last season. At the top of the list is Sean Flannery. Flannery, also a center fielder for the Mustangs, is expected to be a big piece both at the plate and on the mound. “Sean’s going to be a big piece for us on both sides of the ball.” Pembroke said. “With his bat, he hit over .300 last season. We expect an even bigger year this year.” Junior Jake Zabbara, both started and relieved for Mount Sinai in 2025 as a sophomore, and after overcoming the obstacles that come with being a young varsity player, Pembroke believes that there’s plenty to like about his young pitcher. “Especially as a sophomore, you’re going to have some bumps.” Pembroke said. “He’s looked really good this winter, so we’re excited for him to man our rotation this year and be one of our top guys.” Although a ninth grader, Matthew Passantino will be entering his second year on varsity, was praised by his coaches for his growth during the offseason, and Pembroke believes that he will once again be a big part of the rotation. This season, Mount Sinai is retaining almost the entirety of their lineup. At first base is Jackson Paplin. Paplin, a Plattsburg commit, was praised for both his glove and bat, and will be a mainstay in the Mustangs lineup in 2025. “He’s an outstanding defender.” Pembroke said. “He plays tremendous defense at first which makes the rest of our infield very confident. He’s gotten much better offensively this offseason this winter, he’s put on some size so we expect him to help us in the lineup this year.” Next to Paplin in the infield is Clarkson University commit and all-leaguer Keith Hall. For the Mustangs in 2025, Hall hit .340 last year in the middle of the order for the Mustangs. Pembroke praised him for his high contact rate and strong glove in the middle of the order. At third base is Matthew Chin. Chin was a midseason call up last season six games into the season to DH for Mount Sinai. Chin wasted no time taking advantage of his opportunity, hitting .280. “What I liked about him is that he always had quality ABs.” Pembroke said. “He listened and made some adjustments and made some really huge strides as he continued to play. This year we expect him to be a big piece for us, and he also pitched on the mound. He’s replacing a huge piece for us in Nate Castro. So obviously he’s got big shoes to fill, but if there’s anybody that can do it, It’s going to be Matty Chin.” In the outfield, one of the returning players for the Mustangs is John Leonard. Leonard, a left handed hitter, put together quality at bats during 2024 despite facing tough left handed hitters. This year, Pembroke believes that the strength Leonard added in the offseason plus the experience last season will help Pembroke be even more effective this season. Starting behind the plate for the Mustangs is senior Ralph Passantino. Ralph is the older brother of freshman Matt Passantino, will attending SUNY Maratime in the fall. Passantino is entering his third year as a member of the varsity team. “He was a good sophomore and a solid junior.” Pembroke said. “I think he’s going to have a big for us as a senior. He’s another kid that’s put on a lot of size this offseason, he’s one of our captains. He’s just one of those guys that checks all of those boxes both on and off the field and he’s one of those guys that does whatever it takes to be a team guy.” Although he’s going to miss the entire season due to injury, senior James Trepiccione is committed to play at SUNY New Paltz, and will find other ways to help the team as a captain. Last but certainly not least is Army commit and fifth year varsity player Bennie Franquiz. Franquiz, the teams shortstop is one of the best players in the history of the Mount Sinai program, and Pembroke is hopeful that Franquiz can have one more amazing season that potentially ends in a championship. Season stats for Mount Sinai sophomore Bennie Franquiz (11 games) 23-for-35 (.657 AVG), 15 runs, 19 RBIs, 6 doubles, 10 BBs, 0 Ks, .717 OBP, .828 SLG, 17 stolen bases pic.twitter.com/RDDmdtXBB6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 22, 2023 “There’s so much to say about him.” Pembroke said. “He got brought and played 10 games as an eighth grader. He started at second base in the Long Island Championship that we ended up winning that year. We go as far as Benny goes. He’s a leader, he impacts the game at every facet. He’s one of the best hitters on the island and one of the premier shortstops in the region. After this year, he’s going to be one of the best players Mount Sinai has ever had.” Being in one of the toughest leagues in the entire Island is a big challenge, but it’s a challenge that Pembroke believes his team is more than prepared for. “The league is loaded.” Pembroke said. “I don’t think I’d be speaking out of line saying it’s one of the toughest leagues in Suffolk County this year. There’s no easy matchup. These are programs that are always in the playoffs, always in the hunt for county championships, and are powerhouse programs year in and year out. For us, I love that and our gives love that. The competition is what builds you and it makes for strong and exciting games.” The Mustangs will open their league season on April 1 against Miller Place.

The post Mount Sinai Motivated by Last Year’s Finish appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s series

by Max Edelman

Jacob Rentz earned his second win of the season and Bennie Franquiz continued his incredible start to the season with a 3-hit day including an RBI single to break a scoreless tie in the fourth. @GCsports pic.twitter.com/fQAazht5Tf

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 22, 2023

In his first season as head coach of the Mount Sinai Mustangs, falling short of the playoffs in the final game of the season was disappointing for Ryan Pembroke’s team. We lost in the semi-finals to Sayville for the conference championship in extra innings. It was a tough way to lose, but it was a good experience for the returners who are coming back this year.” Mount Sinai entered the 2023 playoffs as the No. 8 seed. Following a loss in the playoffs opening game against Bayport-Blue Point, the Mustangs took two straight games, taking down both ESM and Rocky Point before the loss to Sayville. “We were road warriors.” Pembroke said. “We were on the road all four games, which is never easy but we did have the pitching to make a run.” The Mustangs will be charging into the 2024 season after losing four pitchers who were major parts of the program over the last few seasons. All four of them graduated in 2023, and are now playing college baseball. Those include Chris Batuyios, who is now pitching at St. Johns. JT Caruso is now at the University of Miami. Max Reichenbach, now at Mercy, and Jacob Rentz, now at Herkimer. “They were the mainstay of the pitching staff for years.” Pembroke said. “We’re obviously replacing four good arms, which is always tough. But that also makes it exciting as well.” With the losses, the returners will need to step up. Junior Benny Franquiz, Army-commit, was one of the first names that came to Pembroke’s mind when asked who would be the big impact players for his team this season. Despite being a junior, this will be Franquiz’s fourth varsity season, having been on the team since eighth grade with their Long Island Championship winning team. Season stats for Mount Sinai sophomore Bennie Franquiz (11 games) 23-for-35 (.657 AVG), 15 runs, 19 RBIs, 6 doubles, 10 BBs, 0 Ks, .717 OBP, .828 SLG, 17 stolen bases pic.twitter.com/RDDmdtXBB6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 22, 2023 “He’s our leader.” Pembroke said. “He’s one of our captains. He’s the guy that sets the tone for us as a team. And he really has for the last couple of years, even though he’s been a younger guy. He plays at a premium position at shortstop and he plays it as well as anybody, he’s a phenomenal, phenomenal defender.” As effective as Franquiz is in the field, he is just as dangerous at the plate. Last season as a sophomore, Franquiz hit .500, had eight doubles, 30 RBIs, and was named both All-League and All-County. Perhaps the most impressive accomplishment for Franquiz was his strikeouts, or, lack thereof. In 94 plate appearances, Franquez only struck out once. “His bat-to-ball skills are incredible,” Pembroke said. “And it’s been like that ever since he’s been on varsity. For us, we’re expecting Benny to “Be Benny.” Nothing more, nothing less. He’s gonna go out there every day, play hard, play elite defense, and have quality AB after quality AB. While hardly a varsity veteran, Nate Castro made his mark on the Mustangs in 2023, his first season on varsity. In 2023, Castro hit .440, had 20 RBIs, two doubles, and only struck out six times in 100 plate appearances. “Nate was huge for us.” Pembroke said. “First year varsity player, you never know what you’re going to get. He earned everything he got. To put up the numbers he did as a first year varsity player in our league where we’re always facing good teams and good pitching, kind of tells you a lot about him.” Along with Franquiz, Castro, the Mustang’s third baseman, creates a very strong left side of the infield for the Mustangs this season. Queens-commit Andrew Yanez, will be a key component in Mount Sinai’s new-look rotation. “Even though [Yanez] didn’t get a lot of innings last year, he threw a lot for his summer team.” Pembroke said. “We have big expectations for him on the mound.” Andrew Yanez (Mount Sinai 2024) commits to Queens College @USG_Baseball pic.twitter.com/2kZYSqIE5B — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) September 25, 2023 Junior Mark Fazio was also cited by his coach as a potential impact pitcher in 2024. “[Fazio] was really big for us in the playoffs.” Pembroke said. “He threw twice in the playoffs out of the ‘pen in high-leverage situations and he was absolutely outstanding. He threw at Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville, which are two very tough environments, but he grabbed the bull by the horns and was outstanding.” Left-handed hitting senior Jacob Schneider drew praise from his coach for his strong arm and power at the plate. Sean Flannery was another key piece for the Mustangs a season ago, hitting over .300 while also possessing strong defensive and pitching versatility. Mount Sinai is also getting back both of their catchers James Trepiconne and Ralph Passentino. In terms of key newcomers, Pembroke mentioned sophomore Jake Zabbara, who is a pitcher who was on JV a season ago. “He’s a guy who will definitely be in the mix for one of the spots in the rotation.” Pembroke said. “He’s a left-handed pitcher, a kid that competes, has a tremendous work ethic and a guy we’re excited about not only for this year, but for years to come.” For the Mustangs, defense reigns supreme, as that is what coach Pembroke cited as the strength of his team this season. “We’re going to play D.” Pembroke said. “We’re really strong up the middle, we take pride in our defense. And we’re going to be fast. We have very good on-field speed. Meaning we’re going to be tracking balls, cutting balls off, good range in the infield and base-running.” The Mustangs will open their season on March. 25, at Kings Park.

The post Ryan Pembroke Takes Over as Mount Sinai Head Coach appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

by Max Edelman

(Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series.)

Final: Mount Sinai 20, Rocky Point 6
WP: JT Caruso (5 IP, 6 Ks)

Derek Menechino: 4 hits, 2 runs, RBI
JT Caruso: 2 hits, 3 runs, 4 RBIs
Castro: 3 hits, 4 runs

Mount Sinai advances to face Sayville pic.twitter.com/q4VJ3bmYVQ

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 19, 2023

After serving as an assistant coach for the Mount Sinai Mustangs since 2016, Ryan Pembroke is preparing for a new challenge in 2024, as he is taking over as the head coach. The Mustangs, who finished the 2023 season with a 12-12 record, look to improve upon a season in which they just barely got into the playoffs.

“We actually just squeaked by to get in.” Head Coach Ryan Pembroke said. “We were hampered with injuries. We lost in the semi-finals to Sayville for the conference championship in extra innings. It was a tough way to lose, but it was a good experience for the returners who are coming back this year.”

Mount Sinai entered the 2023 playoffs as the No. 8 seed. Following a loss in the playoffs opening game against Bayport-Blue Point, the Mustangs took two straight games, taking down both ESM and Rocky Point before the loss to Sayville.

“We were road warriors.” Pembroke said. “We were on the road all four games, which is never easy but we did have the pitching to make a run.”

The Mustangs will be charging into the 2024 season after losing four pitchers who were major parts of the program over the last few seasons.

But that also makes it exciting as well.”

With the losses, the returners will need to step up.

Season stats for Mount Sinai sophomore Bennie Franquiz (11 games)

23-for-35 (.657 AVG), 15 runs, 19 RBIs, 6 doubles, 10 BBs, 0 Ks, .717 OBP, .828 SLG, 17 stolen bases pic.twitter.com/RDDmdtXBB6

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 22, 2023

“He’s our leader.” Pembroke said. “He’s one of our captains. He’s the guy that sets the tone for us as a team. And he really has for the last couple of years, even though he’s been a younger guy. He plays at a premium position at shortstop and he plays it as well as anybody, he’s a phenomenal, phenomenal defender.”

As effective as Franquiz is in the field, he is just as dangerous at the plate.

To put up the numbers he did as a first year varsity player in our league where we’re always facing good teams and good pitching, kind of tells you a lot about him.”

Along with Franquiz, Castro, the Mustang’s third baseman, creates a very strong left side of the infield for the Mustangs this season.

Queens-commit Andrew Yanez, will be a key component in Mount Sinai’s new-look rotation.

“Even though [Yanez] didn’t get a lot of innings last year, he threw a lot for his summer team.” Pembroke said. “We have big expectations for him on the mound.”

Andrew Yanez (Mount Sinai 2024) commits to Queens College @USG_Baseball pic.twitter.com/2kZYSqIE5B

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) September 25, 2023

Junior Mark Fazio was also cited by his coach as a potential impact pitcher in 2024.

“[Fazio] was really big for us in the playoffs.” Pembroke said. “He threw twice in the playoffs out of the ‘pen in high-leverage situations and he was absolutely outstanding. He threw at Bayport-Blue Point and Sayville, which are two very tough environments, but he grabbed the bull by the horns and was outstanding.”

Left-handed hitting senior Jacob Schneider drew praise from his coach for his strong arm and power at the plate.

“He’s a left-handed pitcher, a kid that competes, has a tremendous work ethic and a guy we’re excited about not only for this year, but for years to come.”

For the Mustangs, defense reigns supreme, as that is what coach Pembroke cited as the strength of his team this season.

“We’re going to play D.” Pembroke said. “We’re really strong up the middle, we take pride in our defense. In most circumstances, a team would prefer the lefty-lefty match up. But with a .650 hitter at the plate, this was a scenario it would’ve made sense for an intentional walk. Franquiz made him pay with an RBI single up the middle to send his dugout into a frenzy and give Mount Sinai the 1-0 lead. They added another run on an RBI single by Jacob Schneider to make it a 2-0 lead. Mount Sinai’s starting pitcher, Jacob Rentz, did his job as he allowed just 1 run but he did run into some trouble in the fifth inning. Jack Kiernan hit a one-out single and that brought up catcher Mike Schleider. The dangerous hitter crushed one off the top of the left field fence – just narrowly missing a game-tying shot. Instead he settled for a double and it put runners on 2nd & 3rd with one out. That was all for Rentz, who was relieved by Max Reichenbach. After a pop out for the second out of the inning, Joey Citrangola walked to load the bases and so did McBrien to bring in a run. With the game on the line and Mount Sinai clinging to their 2-1 lead, Reichenbach came up huge with a strikeout of opposing pitcher, Nick Frusco, on a great change up to end the inning. While both starting pitchers only surrendered one run combined, there were many batters left on base. In the opening frame, Ayden Deslauriers and Brady McGowan of ESM hit two consecutive singles. Then, following a stolen base by McGowan and a base on balls by cleanup hitter Tristan Gatchalian, who then swiped a bag, the Sharks had two men in scoring position. However, Mount Sinai starter and Mercy College commit Max Reichenbach worked out of the early jam to keep it scoreless. Reichenbach finished the day with four shutout innings and six punchouts. Bennie Franquiz was the fSS for the Mustangs and reached with a single in the bottom half of the opening frame. The Army commit was busy on the base paths despite the defeat and ended his day with a single, base on balls, and a stolen base. Both teams had runners in scoring position in the third, but only Mount Sinai was able to capitalize. A two out walk by backstop Drew McGowan sparked the Sharks. Then, he swiped second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Gatchalian then was hit by a pitch and took first base. Once again, Reichenbach held strong and finished the inning with a called third strike. The Mustangs came out hot in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff base on balls to third baseman Jackson Paplin. Then, catcher Passentino drew a one out base on balls. With two outs, clean up hitter Jacob Schneider knocked a hit that brought in Paplin to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Sharks offense was able to strike in the fifth and not only tie the game, but take the lead. Back-to-back singles by both Brady McGowan and Drew McGowan gave the Sharks early baserunners with no outs. Then, Gatchalian drew another base on balls to load the bases. Gatchalian reached base all at bats and finished the day with three walks and a hit by pitch which set up left fielder Cole Johnson who drove in the tying run with a hit. Following two strikeouts, the Sharks drove in the eventual winning run courtesy of first baseman London Davis who drew a base on balls. Deslauriers held the lead with a strong sixth inning including two punchouts. Final score 2-1 ESM wins pic.twitter.com/K2Q3gexF3w — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2023 In the final frame, ESM turned to Luca Occhiogrosso to secure the save. The junior retired three consecutive batters, with two strikeouts. Ayden Deslauriers was named the Game Changer Player of the Game following an impressive six inning performance while surrendering one run. Deslauriers expressed the importance of pounding the strike zone following a few rough games to open the season. Certainly six innings of one-run ball is a great way to turn things around. The Mustangs went on to win 16 out of 17 and reached the Suffolk County Finals, but fell to a talented Rocky Point team. However, Head Coach Eric Reichenbach believes his team has the potential to make another run. They won the Long Island Conference V Championship over Island Trees in 2021 led by a young roster that was perhaps one year ahead of schedule. The 2022 roster and this year’s team features many of those players that won it all and know what it takes to get over the top. Reichenbach has been at the helm of Mount Sinai Baseball for the last 18 years, and has been a member of the staff for 25 years. Reichenbach played college baseball at the University of Tennessee and Saint John’s University. Reichenbach eventually pitched in the New York Mets organization for four seasons. The Mustangs will be entering 2023 without many key pieces from last year’s run. According to Reichenbach, “Most of the offensive players have graduated and we need to replace our catcher, both corner infield positions, and find all 3 outfielders.” Some of last year’s standout Mustangs are currently making impacts with their college squad. Matthew Carrera held down the hot corner last season with a .462 AVG and drove in 24 runs. Carrera is now playing for Sacred Heart. Current Adelphi Panther LJ Bohne played in the outfield and scored 24 runs during his final season. Matt Galli was a utility man and also made appearances on the mound last season. Now playing at LIU, Gali hit .377 as a Mustang in 2022. Finally, Franklin Pierce University Raven Kyle Salvati finished his time at Mount Sinai with a strong 5-0 record and a 2.95 ERA. While the losses leave large holes to fill, the starting rotation will look to make up for it. Reichenbach highlighted his staff, saying that “our pitching staff is solid with some really big arms. Starting pitching is exceptional.” The pitching rotation currently has three current seniors who are all college commits. Headlined by two of the best pitchers in the state, they are in great shape. Chris Batuyios, current senior and Saint John’s commit, reaches up to 94 mph with his heater and has three pitches with strong command. This power and finesse is a bad combination for hitters this season. Last season, Batuyios threw to a minuscule 0.86 ERA and punched out 72 batters in 45 innings. I’m sure our younger positional talent will keep progressing as the year goes on, but it’s going to be our arms that carry the load for Sinai this year.” Mount Sinai takes the diamond on March 27th against Rocky Point.

The post Mount Sinai Ready for Next Step Following Finals Appearance appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

by Andy Smith

Mount Sinai began the 2022 season losing their first three games to Sayville. Final: Mount Sinai 6, SWR 2 pic.twitter.com/O0eywBOZHR — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2022 It was a battle of two aces as Chris Batuyios took on Billy Steele in Suffolk Class A Conference IV pool play at Shoreham Wading River High School this afternoon. Both are highly regarded arms in the conversation to win the Paul Gibson Award, so this was expected to be a low-scoring game before it started. Steele, who committed to West Point last year, had yet to give up a run going into this start and has consistently been sitting over 90 MPH with his fastball. Batuyios, a St. John’s commit, is an arm who consistently fills up the zone with strikes while also striking out twice as many hitters as he has innings pitched. The game started as many thought it would, with Steele and Batuyios both recording 1-2-3 innings in the 1st. After Will Rodgers reached on an E6 and Franklin-Pierce-commit Kyle Salvati walked, Joey Valenti ripped a double to right to give Mount Sinai an early 2-0 lead. Despite a dangerous Shoreham Wading River lineup, Batuyios dealt from the beginning. SWR was able to score on an error by the Mount Sinai second baseman, but there was very little hard contact made against Batuyios. Steele and Batuyios continued to battle through this one as the score stayed 2-1 in favor of Mount Sinai, until 5-hole hitter Joey Marchese took advantage of a high fastball and drove it over the left field fence to tie it up at 2. Right when it seemed to be a close game, Mount Sinai came out swinging in the top of the seventh. L.J. Bohne got the rally started by beating out an infield single to the shortstop. Two batters later, Miami-commit J.T. Caruso drew his second walk of the day, which was followed by a Matt Galli RBI single to right field. Galli, only a junior, is one of the top uncommitted players on the island. He’s been over 90 MPH with his fastball this season with the potential for more velocity to come later on. Mount Sinai did not stop there. Will Rodgers hit a liner to the first baseman that was dropped, leading to Caruso being able to score and Galli managing to escape a rundown and arrive at second on the play. The lone freshman in the starting lineup, Bennie Franquiz, then smoked a base hit over the second baseman’s head, scoring Gall. Franquiz made his mark on the team as an eighth grader last year and has proven that he is worthy of starting due to his compact left-handed stroke and smooth defensive actions. Kyle Salvati dumped a single into left to finish off the rally and the inning ended at 6-2 favoring Mount Sinai. Batuyios went out for the seventh and was able to go the distance, recording a strikeout to end it. He was credited with the win in this one.

They defeated Island Trees in a wild one, 8-6, at St. Joseph’s College as ace Chris Batuyios struck out the final hitter to seal the deal. One could make the case that Mount Sinai was expected to compete for a championship in 2022, yet found a way to win it last season. Reichenbach agreed with that statement. “I thought we were a year away, so it was definitely a surprise considering most of our impact guys were sophomores. But our pitching staff was just really good,” he added. St. John’s-commit Chris Batuyios (Mount Sinai 2023) pic.twitter.com/V0GLaJtYe2 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 27, 2022 The aforementioned Batuyios was an absolute stud on the mound. He compiled an unblemished record of 8-0 with a 0.98 ERA as a sophomore. He was named to our All-Axcess team and he committed to St. John’s following the season. He has since improved and will enter the season as one of the best pitchers on LI. They will pencil him into the top of the rotation. They had another undefeated pitcher and that was Eric’s son, Max Reichenbach, who went 6-0 with a 2.29 ERA. He is committed to George Washington University and he was named All-League. Their third starting pitcher was senior Danny Kellachan, who was also terrific, went 3-1 with a 1.67 ERA and is currently pitching at Ithaca College. He was their one senior from last season that was an impact player. Two of those three are back, but we are just scratching the surface with their talent. If you are followers of Axcess Baseball, you certainly know J.T. Caruso by now. He is Miami-commit, a hard-throwing lefty that did not pitch a whole bunch last year but was still named All-League for his bat. He hit .452, and should’ve been named All-County. Coach noted he will start the midweek game and will play right field when he’s not pitching. They also have Franklin Pierce-commit Kyle Salvati, who recently touched 93 MPH in a bullpen session and was originally slated to play the field in college but his recent explosion in velocity may have them rethinking that. He has been on varsity since 8th grade, where he recorded a save against Shoreham-Wading River on the road. He has grown to 6’5 and is an imposing figure on the mound. He will certainly contribute on the mound and at the plate. Reichenbach noted he is hoping that he has a bounce back year with the bat. Matt Galli is another hard-throwing pitcher that was up to 91-92 MPH this summer in Georgia. He was named All-County last year after he batted .414. He is still uncommitted, but Reichenbach noted that it won’t be for long. He will start at 3B and pitch. Joining Caruso in the OF is Adelphi-commit LJ Bohne who was named All-League last year, batting .377. He had a big two-out RBI single in the Long Island Championship to give the Mustangs some cushion. Senior SS Matt Carrera somehow didn’t receive All-League or All-County despite hitting .340 and playing a superb defense. He is committed to Sacred Heart. Senior OF Joe Valenti was named All-League as well. He had a huge throw home in the LIC to gun down a runner in the second inning. He also had a walk-off hit in the 10th inning against John Glenn earlier in the season. Last but not least is the catcher. You’re probably wondering with a hard-throwing staff that features several prominent pitchers, who’s going to handle it? Derek Mennechino hits a clutch go ahead double in the 5th inning. 6-5 Sinai leads pic.twitter.com/TOHHvIduFr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 20, 2021 Well Mount Sinai was wondering that too, so they decided to convert Derek Mennechino to behind the plate. He also had a huge clutch hit in the LIC to give the Mustangs a 6-5 lead. Here’s what coach had to say about him: “He’s coming along. He was always a duel player for us but was thrust into the starting catcher role. Since he plays high-level travel ball he can handle those high-level arms we have. He can handle velocity. He’s put a lot of time in and he worked with Kyle Strovink last year to improve.” When asked whether the team has been complacent following the success of the past year, Reichenbach immediately shot that notion down. “I would say a lot of them have worked harder. Everyone is gunning for them. They know they have to work hard – as soon as they don’t, they’ll be knocked down. They’ll be well-prepared. The leadership on the team is really good. There’s been no immature mentality. They are gung-ho to repeat.” They open up their title defense on Monday, March 28 against Sayville.

The post Coming Off First LIC In Program History, Mount Sinai Hungry to Stay At the Top appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Chris Batuyios strikes out 3 batters to end the game. Mount Sinai wins the Conference V Long Island Championship pic.twitter.com/ZmZmwIGRbW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 20, 2021 In a game that will be talked about for years to come, Mount Sinai achieved the goal every team on Long Island tries to do at the beginning of the year. And that goal was to win the Long Island Championship In a game full of clutch hitting, spectacular defensive plays, and a little bit of controversy, Mount Sinai outlasted Island Trees winning by a score of 8-6. The game started off like most games do. Max Reichenbach worked around a hit batter to keep Island Trees off the board in the top half of the inning. Robby Stephens did his part by retiring the first three batters he faced in the bottom half of the inning. The very next inning saw Island Trees put a couple of runners on with two outs, and after a perfectly executed double steal, Nick Drew hit a grounder up the middle to score the first run of the game. The runner from second was trying to make it a 2-0 game but center fielder Joe Valenti threw a bullet to the plate to prevent the run from scoring and getting Sinai out of further trouble. Stephens went back out in the second inning and once again kept the Sinai bats quiet, keeping it at a 1-0 affair through two innings. In the top of the third inning was when Max Reichenbach found his control after hitting three batters in the early stage of the game and once again kept Island Trees off the board. In the bottom half of the inning, Sinai was finally able to figure out Stephens. LJ Bohne stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. That was when Stepehns decided to throw over to second and appeared to have picked off 8th grader Benny Franquiz. However, Franquiz was awarded third base via an obstruction call on the Island Trees shortstop. A few Pitches later Bohne hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at one run each, scoring Franquiz from third. Two betters later, University of Miami commit JT Caruso gave Sinai it’s first lead of the game with an RBI single to left field. The next batter, Matt Galli, hit a double to make it second and third with two outs. Will Rodgers hit a single to center field to bring home Galli and Caruso to give Sinai a 4-1 lead. This also provided Max Reichenbach some insurance runs and took a little bit of pressure off of him. In the top of the fourth inning, Robby Stephens was able to get one of those runs back on an RBI groundout to the shortstop. However, a baserunning mistake by the runner on second allowed Sinai to escape the inning on an unorthodox 6-3-5 double play. In the bottom of the 4th, Benny Franquiz reached base once again and was, once again, knocked in by LJ Bohne, this time on a RBI single just out of reach of the second baseman. Jonathan Uzzo came on in relief and was able to get out of the inning without allowing Bohne to score. Island Trees looked to be on the ropes before they came to bat in the bottom of the fourth, but they weren’t out of the fight just yet. Following another hit batter, a 9 pitch walk to Nick Drew, and a hit, Island Trees had the bases loaded with one out, that’s when sophomore Chris Batuyios took over for Reichenbach and faced the tough challenge of getting out of the jam with no runs crossing the plate. Central Connecticut-commit Antonio Ducatelli put together a great at bat and he ended up hitting a bullet up the middle to make it a 5-3 affair. Sinai once again got an out on a baserunning blunder when they had two runners standing at third base. The very next batter, Jonathan Uzzo hit an RBI groundout to first to make it a one run game. A few pitches later, Ducatelli made a great play on the basepaths, scoring on a pass ball to tie the game at 5. Batuyios settled down and was able to get out of the inning, keeping the game tied at 5. The very next inning, sophomore catcher Derek Menechino stepped to the plate with a runner on second with one out. That’s when he became the hero Sinai needed with one out in the fifth inning. He crushed a go-ahead RBI double over the left fielder’s head to give Sinai the lead to make it 6-5. A few batters later, another controversy presented itself. After a triple from Matt Carrera, JT Caruso brings him home with an rbi single. Sinai pushes the lead back to two runs. 8-6 in the bottom of the 6th pic.twitter.com/jleV1J3b4b — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 20, 2021 Joe Valenti came to the plate with runners on second and third and one out. He hit a fly ball down the right field line, the Right Fielder for Island Trees made an incredible diving catch for the second out of the inning, both runners tagged up and the score was now 7-5 Sinai. Island Trees appealed to both second and third base, the umpires did rule that the runner on third left on time, but the runner from second left too early. There was then a 30 minute delay where the umpires and rules officials were looking over the rules as Island Trees asked if the run would still be counted or not. After speaking with a New York State Baseball rules interpreter via cellphone, it was ruled that the run would in fact still count. In the top of the sixth, Island Trees threatened again as they had a second and third with two outs, Junior Connor Waiting was up to the challenge presented to him and hit an RBI single to make it a 7-6 game. Up next was Antonio Ducatelli with runners on first and third and two outs. Chris Batuyios made the decision to not pitch to Ducatelli right away, he would try to pick the runner off at third and he appeared to have the runner picked off. However, the ball was dropped by the third baseman. The runner from first took off for second when he saw the ball was dropped, the third baseman was running towards second base to try and get that runner out, the runner from third then took off and was ultimately thrown out at the plate to end the inning. After a triple from Matt Carrera, JT Caruso brings him home with an rbi single. Sinai pushes the lead back to two runs. 8-6 in the bottom of the 6th pic.twitter.com/jleV1J3b4b — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 20, 2021 In the bottom of the sixth, junior Matt Carrera crushed a ball to the deepest part of the park and was able to leg out a triple, the next batter, JT Caruso, knocked in Carrera with an RBI single to make it a 8-6 game. That is all the run support Chris Batuyios needed to seal the deal in the seventh inning. Despite allowing the tying run to reach second, the sophomore phenom struck out three batters in the inning to give Mount Sinai the win in a game full of excitement and controversy. A team that looked like they were on the come-up and ready to dominate in 2022 arrived a year ahead of schedule.

The post Mount Sinai Bests Island Trees in an Action-Packed Game to Claim the Conference V Long Island Championship appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

By Nicholas Cipolla

Chris Batuyios strikes out 3 batters to end the game.

However, the ball was dropped by the third baseman. Scratch that, it doesn’t get ANY better than that. The games ranged from Sag Harbor to South Side, and the great majority of them were close. I wish I could be at all the games but that’s just not possible, so I took my best guess as to which game to cover. I started at Sachem East, stayed for a few innings and made the short drive to Selden for Newfield’s game. The decision worked out well as Commack got out to an early 4-1 lead then I went to a Newfield and the score was 0-0 in the second inning. Here’s all the action. Nassau III South Side defeated Manhasset, 2-0, on the road behind a complete game, two-hit shutout by Danny Russell. This was a remarkable turn of events after Manhasset had won 8-7, in Game 1 of the series to win their 13th consecutive game and was looking for the sweep. South Side flipped the switch and won back-to-back elimination games. I was there on Thursday when TJ Maher put the team on his back, firing a complete game, hitting a grand slam and driving in five runs. They will face Newfield on Sunday at St. Joseph’s College beginning at 3pm. For Manhasset, it is certainly disappointing as they had their best team in years led by a dominant pitching staff but they come up just short. They finish the season 16-5. The two runs scored on two sac flies by Zach Schnabel. It was also Schnabel who caught the final out in a collision with the left fielder but he appears to be okay now. Bethpage lost the first game of the series, 8-2, at home before bouncing back with two victories. They felt they could’ve competed for a state championship last year before the cancellation. This year’s team is just as talented and proved that. They will face East Islip on Sunday at Mitchel Field beginning at 2pm. Tyler Kregeloh pitched a great game for Plainedge, he had an amazing season. Just last Saturday, Clarke won 17-0. Even the most ardent Island Trees supporter had to feel on edge about their chances. But they wound up winning three straight elimination games – including two against Clarke. Vinny Giambona had ices in his veins – pitching in relief on Thursday in the 8-3 win (escaping a jam when the lead was 5-3) and then throwing a complete game yesterday and striking out Tyler Cox to end the game. Michael Montevago had the go-ahead RBI single that was the difference. They will face Mount Sinai on Sunday at St. Joseph’s 11am. For Clarke, they seemed like a near-lock to win the Long Island Championship this season with their dynamite lineup and pitching staff but they come up just short. They had won 17-0 and 12-2 in back-to-back playoff games but the bats went cold after that. The big knock came on a go-ahead grand slam by Jordan Meirowitz, they also got a three-run shot by Jason Tagios. They will face Pierson on Sunday at Mitchel Field at 5pm. Suffolk I Commack jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second inning and never looked back. They cruised past Sachem East, 8-1, to capture their second County Championship in four season under Bryan Bonin. Matt Edwards allowed just one ER, he credited his defense for turning four DPs behind him – and Connor Pedersen made a highlight-reel play diving full-extension to his left and flipping the ball to second to start a 6-4-3 rally killing double play. The other big moment came in the next inning when there was bases loaded, 1 out for the dangerous Evan Fisher who has 6 HRs, but was jammed and Pedersen caught the ball and stepped on second to end the jam. That effectively took the life from the home crowd and Commack continued to add on runs. Commack improves to 17-3 on the season. They will face Massapequa in a rematch of the 2017 LIC at St. Joseph’s at 7pm. Had there been more days off it would’ve been interesting to see Rafe Schlesinger against this powerhouse lineup, but it did not work out that way. Suffolk II Huntington was playing in their first County Finals since 1965 and won their first since 1960! Kyle Colleluori was outstanding and hit a three-run HR to help himself. Chris Segreti also had three hits and a HR against Bay Shore who was looking to win their first title in 1945. It was Bay Shore HC Mike Herbst‘s last game as skipper of the team. Huntington will face Garden City in the Long Island Championship at Mitchel Field 11am. I had pinpointed Huntington as a potential breakout team this season due to their group of four-year varsity players that all play summer ball together and are all college-bound players. For Bay Shore, Jason Ambos hit a two-run HR and League MVP Coltrane Calloway had 4 hits to finish his career on a strong note. Suffolk III We covered the game, which you can read about here. Suffolk IV East Islip cruised past Harborfields, 14-3, thanks to Nick Rizzo‘s complete game gem. It was their first County Championship since 2006. They’ve won 8 games in a row leading into the Long Island Championship against Bethpage on Sunday at Mitchel Field 2pm. Ryan Ferremi went 2-for-3 with a HR and two-run double. Derek Burrell was 4-for-4 with three runs. Matt Torres hit a HR for Harborfields who finish 11-8. Suffolk V Mount Sinai defeated Shoreham-Wading River, 4-1, for their first County Championship since 2016. Danny Kellachan (5.2 IP) and Matt Galli (1.1) combined on the victory. Matt Galli’s two-run single gave them the lead in the third inning. When you combine the two, it’s even more thrilling. With one swing of the bat, Shoreham-Wading River’s eight-hole hitter, Joey Marchese, gave the Wildcats the 5-3 lead over Mount Sinai. They wound up tacking on two more, and holding on to defeat the Mustangs on the road by the score of 7-5. Marchese stated that he “was standing in the box and looking for a fastball to hit hard – got my pitch and took a good swing and got it out,” said the 6’4 slugger. With the victory SWR improves to 3-0 on the season. The Wildcats got on the board in the top of first on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Danny Kockenmeister to score Joey Dwyer – who hit a one-out single to left field and moved to second on a HBP of Billy Steele and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mount Sinai RHP Dan Kellachan escaped further damage on a ground out to third base. Hofstra-commit Jake Halloran got the start for the Wildcats. He walked back-to-back batters with one out in the first inning but used a 6-4-3 DP ball to escape the inning. In the bottom of the second, though, Halloran ran into trouble. After retiring the first batter, he walked Will Rodgers and yielded a ground-rule double off the bat of Matt Galli. He struck out Matt Fauvell for the second out but he allowed an RBI single to nine-hole hitter Derek Mennechino. A walk to Joe Valenti prolonged the inning and LJ Bohne ripped a two-run single to make it 3-1 in favor of the Mustangs. With the track record of success of SWR, I don’t think anyone thought that would be enough of a lead to put away the Wildcats and that was correct as they got one back right away on a long two-out solo HR to center by Billy Steele. Halloran fired a zero in the third inning although he did allow a double to Will Rodgers who stole third. Matt Galli gave one a ride to left center but Christian Niski made a nice play just in front of the 337 sign. The game flipped the script in the fourth inning when Danny Kockenmeister was hit with a pitch to start the inning, he stole second and advanced on a wild pitch. Jake Halloran drew a walk to bring up Marchese. He found the fastball he was looking for and attacked and deposited it over the left field fence to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Mount Sinai did not go down without a fight. They got one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Kyle Salvati who scored Joe Valenti. Matt Carrera was retired to end the inning stranding two runners. In the top of the fifth, Mount Sinai went to the bullpen calling on George Washington-commit Max Reichenbach. Joey Dwyer led off with a single to left and moved to second on a ground out to first. Mount Sinai intentionally walked Liam Bowes for the second time of the game to bring up Kockenmeister who singled to left which resulted in the ball being misplayed allowing two runs to score and suddenly it was a 7-4 game. JT Caruso led off the fifth inning with a single and after Matt Fauvell drew a walk to move him into scoring position, and RBI single by Mennechino cut the deficit to 7-5. Shoreham went to the bullpen to call on Ben Grodski who nearly ran into big trouble when Valenti ripped one down the line but it landed just foul and he struck him out on the next pitch to end the inning. Kyle Salvati struck out three in the sixth inning in relief of Reichenbach but he left the game after appearing to injure his arm in the seventh inning and Caruso came on in relief to throw a scoreless inning. Grodski went back out for the seventh and slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning. SWR will be back in action on Friday against Bayport-Blue Point where they will look to cool down the hot bat of Luke Schartner, who hit three home runs last Saturday.

The post Joey Marchese’s Three-Run Blast Propels SWR to 7-5 Win Over Mount Sinai appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Go-ahead 3-R HR by Joey Marchese puts Shoreham-Wading River up 5-3 in the top of the fourth pic.twitter.com/kyV05kSkBA

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 12, 2021

Hits from the bottom of the lineup and lead changes are two signs of a competitive, compelling game of varsity baseball.
