by Michael Malaszczyk After a stellar 2022 season that saw the Molloy Lions go 34-12, the Lions achieved their next goal of winning the East Coast Conference championship. Molloy and Queens played two games on Saturday, May 14th. Molloy needed to win both and did – two incredible games of baseball. Game 1 saw Molloy come out on top 6-5, while Game 2 saw Molloy win 12-10. End of 1: Garrett Scavelli crushes a 3-R shot to tie the game at 3-3 pic.twitter.com/feCqjySG5e — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2022 Game 1 started out electric. Queens came out swinging in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs (courtesy of an RBI single by Andrew Smith and a two-run triple by Juan De la Rosa). Molloy had all the answers for this aggressive start, scoring three-runs of their ...
So much has happened over the past 2 years, but at the same time March 2020 still feels like yesterday. That dreaded month that started a cavalcade of negative news and heartache. From strictly a baseball perspective, so many kids had their high school baseball careers end without much of a warning. So much unfinished business on the field. Those dreary days of March that seemingly never ended, followed by the beautiful spring weather of April and May that came and went without as much as a home run, no-hitter or walk-off win. I wanted to get the perspective of a high school and college coach, so I asked two trusted people – John Galanoudis of Molloy and Matt Rocchio of John Glenn to look back on what it was like during the time period and how they’ve turned the page. “Lo...
Special thanks to East Coast S & P for sponsoring this year’s Fall Ball Series! Make sure to check out their Instagram page here. They will be leaning on left handed hitter Matt Overton who batted .367 with a .979 OPS. Several other impact bats in the lineup such as David Franchi, Jake McCarthy, Thomas Brady, Garrett Scavelli, Pete Theodorellis, etc pic.twitter.com/3kJLHN0YvC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 6, 2021 Despite all the obstacles that playing during a pandemic presented, Molloy managed to have their best season in program history in 2021. They went 25-11, captured the ECC Championship with two wins over rival St. Thomas Aquinas, and then rattled off four wins in the NCAA East Regional Championship before running out of pitching and losing 9-2 against the...
(Photo Credit: Jeff Wilson) For the first time since 2001, the Molloy Lions are the ECC Baseball Champions. pic.twitter.com/hRcUWz4XQF — ECCNetwork (@ECCSportsNet) May 22, 2021 Molloy was the last college team standing on Long Island and for a brief time, it appeared they may just be duplicating New York Tech‘s 2019 season and making a trip to Cary, NC for the Division-II College World Series. Southern New Hampshire had other plans. The (Division-II) beasts of the northeast defeated the Lions, 9-2, in a winner-take-all East Region Championship to advance to their third College World Series (2012, 2018) and it came while playing in their fifth consecutive Regional Championship. Molloy had defeated SNHU on Monday night, 8-3, behind an outstanding relief outing by RHP Ryan Karp (5 IP, 1...
While it might not be as fruitful as the 2019 season in which several teams were competing for conference championships and NYIT reached the Division-II World Series and LIU Post fell just short, we still were treated to a great – albeit shortened – 2021 collegiate season. Here we are on Memorial Day Weekend and we have two Division-I teams, one Division-II and one Division-III team still alive. Here’s what’s on tap: Division-I: –Stony Brook will host the America East tournament beginning this afternoon. The No. 1 Seawolves will host Maine beginning at 11am. The teams did not face each other this season, but Stony Brook has a 51-31 record against them all-time. Expect Sam Turcotte to get the start for the Seawolves. He has a 2.53 ERA on the season. Stony Brook...
Division-I: St. John’s defeated Villanova, 6-1, to conclude their season on a high note. They finish with a record of 19-21 – a very uncharacteristic under .500 season for the Johnnies. In fact it’s their first sub-.500 season since 2013 and the previous one before that was over 60 years ago. In the victory, they used a six-run second inning as the engine for the win. Justin Folz opened up the scoring with a solo HR and Carson Bartels drove in two with a single to center. Marty Higgins led the offense with three hits. Tyler Roche pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run (0 ER) and striking out eight. Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn slammed the door on the victory. It will feel strange seeing a Big East tournament played without the Johnnies – they̵...
Division-I St. John’s lost the middle game of their three-game set against Villanova by the score of 7-3 to fall to 18-21 on the season. The game was tied 1-1 in the seventh before Villanova broke it open with a three-spot and then tacked on four in the 9th to open it up. Long Island-native Tyler Arella went 7 innings, allowing just 1 ER on six hits to earn his third win of the season. The Johnnies were held to just seven hits, with no player notching more than one. Tim Cunningham was tagged with the loss. They will look to avoid the sweep today at 1pm. Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Binghamton. They clinched the America East Regular Season title. The Seawolves are now 28-16 on the season and 24-9 in America East play. In Game 1, Jared Milch was staked to ...
Division-I St. John’s lost to UCONN, 4-3, to open up their weekend series. They led 3-1 in the 7th, but the Huskies scored on a squeeze to cut the deficit to two and then in the 8th, a two-run go-ahead double by Kyler Fedko (3-for-5), gave them the lead. Carson Bartels drew a walk in the 9th but they were unable to get him around to score. Austin Peterson earned his sixth win of the season. Joe Joe Rodriguez was tagged with the loss. The Johnnies had 10 hits but struck out 13 times and stranded 8 runners on base. They fell to 14-16 on the season and will play a DH today beginning at 12. Hofstra lost to Northeastern, 13-1, as they have now allowed 35 runs over the past two games. Jack Jett was tagged with the loss, he allowed 7 ER over 6 IP, yielding 11 hits and 3 walks. Ryan Morash a...
Division-I: MARTY’S FOURTH HIT OF THE DAY IS A WALK-OFF! #SJUBase pic.twitter.com/9vsUqqvz28 — St. John’s Baseball (@StJohnsBaseball) April 23, 2021 St. John’s won a walk-off double by Marty Higgins in the 11th inning to defeat Seton Hall, 5-4. It capped a 4-for-4 game for Higgins. Nick Mondak started and was brilliant for the Johnnies, striking out 9 over seven strong innings, yielding just one run. Joe Joe Rodriguez went four innings in relief with four strikeouts to earn the win. They will be back in action today for a DH today at noon. St, John’s is 12-10 overall but 3-5 in conference play. Fordham lost 13-3 to Saint Joseph’s to fall to 16-11 on the season. They actually led 2-1 in the third after a 2-run single by Zach Selinger but that did not last long....
The Molloy Lions may have limped out of the gate but they have turned their season around recently. They ran their win streak to six after a 10-8 victory over Queens yesterday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. They took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple by Peter Theodorellis – who entered the game with a robust .400 AVG – and an RBI double by Sean Hogan – who was just behind at .375 AVG. Corey Tingo got the Knights on the board with an RBI double to score Brad Sakellarides in the second. Molloy extended their lead to 6-1 in the third after an RBI ground out by Matt Overton, RBI single by Thomas Brady and a two-run double by Garrett Scavelli. To their credit, Queens did not back down. Andrew Smith drove in Evan Christopher with an RBI single in...
Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, with some parts of New York touching 80 degrees. It was a summer day with not a cloud in the sky and yet there was only three local teams in action. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook beat Albany in an absolute thriller, 14-11, in Albany in a game that took three hours, 30 minutes. Shane Paradine notched the go-ahead two-run double in the 9th inning to give the Seawolves a 13-11 lead, which they would hold on to. They actually led by 5 runs at two separate times. They led 6-1 in the fifth and 9-4 in the sixth following a solo shot by John Tuccillo. The problem was that the Great Danes offense was just getting going. They put up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth with the game-tying run coming on a sac fly by ...
Final: Molloy 11, Adelphi 4 WP: Joe Minucci (5 IP, 2 ER, 10 K) pic.twitter.com/3JVn9RFaC3 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 16, 2021 Garden City, NY — There was one critical moment in this game where Molloy needed to bear down and keep Adelphi from gaining the momentum and cutting into their lead. It was the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded, one out and pinch hitter Matt Alifano at the plate. The Center Moriches grad came in hitting a robust .600 on the season, but wasn’t starting the game to rest his arm. He smoked one up the middle that appeared destined for an RBI single, but SS James Messina made a terrific sliding grab and flipped to second to start an inning-ending double play. The moment was huge as it not only kept the Panthers off the board, but was...
