Pioneers took game one, 3-2, and game two by the score of 3-1. Senior Kevin Hiss turned in another solid performance tossing 8.1 innings giving up two runs and striking out two in game one. “It’s all about getting quality starts at this time of year against tough competition,” said Molloy head coach Joe Fucarino. ” “I felt great out there. They were a really aggressive team, so it was important for me to go out there and locate pitches,” said&nbs...
This weekend featured some high-drama with some conference rivals i.e. Old Westbury-St. Joseph’s, Farmingdale-St. Joseph’s, NYIT-Molloy, LIU Post-Southern Connecticut and Stony Brook-Albany. While this was all exciting finishes, it makes the playoff pictures extremely murky as well as our Power Rankings; ESPECIALLY at the Division-III level, as my preseason predictions don’t look great right now, however, it doesn’t mean things can’t be completely different in one week. I will do a podcast tomorrow explaining this in depth more. We covered high school during the week, then we got back into the college action this weekend. Staying consistent with our format the previous two weeks, I will segment the rankings by division. Here’s my best guess. Division-I: ...
On a gorgeous day for baseball, teams in our coverage area played a bevy of exciting double-headers, highlighted by four different walk-off victories. Division-I: Stony Brook: The Seawolves were swept in a double-header against Albany University, dropping the first game 16-4 before losing 4-3 in the second. Albany raced out to a massive lead early in the first game after scoring 8 runs in the third inning and 6 in the fourth. The Danes tee’d off against Stony Brook starter Bret Clarke and reliever Teddy Rodliff as all nine hitters cashed in with at least 1 RBI. The second game was a lot more competitive as Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Albany struck back with three runs in the second inning. Stony Brook managed to tie the game up at 3-3 in the seventh inni...
Below are scouting observations from yesterday’s Molloy game. Our reporter, Nick Vecchione, was on the scene providing scouting reports on their top impact players from the afternoon. Angelo Navetta It was a much anticipated wait to finally see Navetta up close and personal, and let me tell you, it was a treat. Listed at 6 feet tall, some say that he is an undersized first basemen, however, he still seems to bring an intimidating presence to the batters box. Navetta sports one of the prettiest left handed swings on the island, and has an inmate ability for pitch recognition. In his earlier at bats he waits patiently for the pitchers to come in his wheel house and those pitches are few and far between. The muscular first basemen sometimes expands the expands the zone and will offer a...
.@berlandsen96 with Molloy starting pitcher Kevin Hiss pic.twitter.com/iOi5TkcrtV Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 25, 2018 It was a very successful afternoon for the Molloy Lions, as they completed the series sweep over ECC-rival Bridgeport with a 2-0 win in Game One and a 5-2 win in Game Two. This weekend at Mitchell Athletic Complex, the Molloy Lions climbed back up to .500 (11-11), start conference play at 4-0 and extend their winning streak to five games. “I’m proud of the way the pitching was,” said head coach Joe Fucarino. “Our whole goal was to get the pitching right for conference [play], and we got four quality starts back-to-back-to-back-to-back.” Game one was a pitchers duel from the beginning, but Molloy senior Kevin His...
There is a ton of talent at our local colleges and universities. Far too little attention is given to the college players, my guess is because people constantly want to know who is the next child prodigy and that involves being not just exceptionally talented but exceptionally young. For purposes of this article, we will focus on the college players that are draft-eligible in 2018 only. There’s two categories; players that should get drafted unless they have a poor season and players that could get drafted but only if they have an exceptional season. Category 1: Reiss Knehr, RHP Fordham Knehr is a 2015 graduate of St. Dominic HS–that’s right he and Kyle Young were on the same stuff. That was prior to Kyle Young’s breakthrough season, and Knehr was the ace of that st...
(Photo Credit: Vincent Dusovic) by Julian Guevara Over the past decade the “nail down” reliever has become one of the most important positions in baseball. This is due in part to the plethora of incredible relief pitching and closers that emerged from the late 1990s-2010. Every ballplayer in the United States knows that the last thing you want to hear at Yankee Stadium in the top of the ninth is Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. Of course, Mariano Rivera’s cutter is what the hitters really feared; however the song plays a huge role in getting the fans involved. My favorite example is the 2012 Oakland Athletics and their closer, Grant Balfour. Balfour, a genius in my opinion, did everything he could to get all 60,000 fans at the Oakland Coliseum involved. His chosen song is also a Metallica hit,...
Yesterday we went over the top story lines for the 2018 high school season, you can read that here. Now we will shift over to the colleges in our coverage area. How good can Adelphi’s pitching staff be? It might not happen this year, but this group of young pitchers has the potential to blossom into something special. The year prior to me getting to Adelphi, they compiled a team ERA of 1.97–good for second in the nation. They came within one inning of qualifying for the College World Series. That pitching staff had four players–Robert Nixon, Jonathon Gonzalez, Mike Scudero and Dillon McNamara that wound up playing professional baseball. McNamara is now with the San Francisco Giants. After watching their Scout Day back in October, I came away very impressed. Their group of...
Plainedge was one of the hottest teams on Long Island entering the postseason in 2017. They were riding a 13-game win streak in large part to the powerful bat of Nicholas DeMicco. He hit three of his five HRs on the season during a two-game stretch in victories over Mineola and Division. On Friday, he committed to Molloy College, the latest in a series of recent signings that promises to benefit the Lions future. DeMicco spoke with Vinny Messana, and here’s what he had to say… First off, congrats on the commitment. Talk a little bit about your experience with the recruiting process. The recruitment process was a lot more stressful than I thought it would be, honestly. Trying to read the coaches and trying to tell what they wanted for their program was challenging. I also had fu...
Coach Fucarino speaking about his 2017-’18 team pic.twitter.com/FzIiO7mriL Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 14, 2017 Today I was down at Mitchel Field in Uniondale to get a good look at the team Molloy will be going to battle with during the upcoming 2018 season. After struggling during the early part of the 2017, they caught fire in the latter portion of the season and made a playoff run. They made it to the ECC championship, but ultimately had their season cut off by LIU Post; who were crowned champs. That team graduated 11 seniors, including several of their impact guys; notably workhorse Ron Bauer, LHP Dominic Danetti, SS Brian Murphy, INF Michael Rahn, INF Kevin Podell, OF Anthony Alberghina and OF Anthony Galanoudis. Despite the large group of outgoing seniors...
Final: Commack 2, Hauppauge 1 WP: Johnny Pohlman (complete game) Krzemienski go-ahead RBI single pic.twitter.com/wxeBR8Wrf9 aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 17, 2017 Johnny Pohlman didn’t have his best command in the first inning, walking the bases loaded but showed his intestinal fortitude by making the big pitches when it counted. He wound up firing a complete game with nine strikeouts, allowing only one run on two hits with six walks in Commack’s 2-1 victory over Hauppauge in the second round of the Class AA playoffs. “I really couldn’t find my fastball to begin with,” said the College of St. Rose-commit. “I had trouble in the beginning, but once I found my change up, and everything was able to set into place, I was able to keep the hitter...
