by Mike Anderson Several coaches labeled Manhasset as the high school with the best varsity baseball pitching staff in Nassau County last year. That staff led the team to a 16-5 record, and spearheaded their 13-game winning streak going into the county finals. They even won game one, before South Side was able to take games two and three to advance to the LIC. Head Coach Mark Giardino credits not only their pitching staff, but also their team chemistry for their success. “The kids bought into each other. It really didn’t matter who was in the lineup on any given day. Everybody pulled for each other. It’s cliche to say that ‘You’re only as good or successful as the last guy on your bench,’ but that was the truth with us… Everybody knew their role, accepted their role, and excelled in their ...
2021 has basically been the year of the retail investor. We’re all familiar with AMC and $dogecoin but you’re not going to find stock advice in this article. But similar to stocks, some players experienced a meteoric rise during the high school season. This isn’t about which players simply performed the best – this is about who performed the best relative to what the expectations were this year. Here’s a breakdown from my vantage point – and I’ve seen (almost) all these players in person. 2021s Coltrane Calloway, Bay Shore The Seton Hall-commit was outstanding all season in leading Bay Shore to the Suffolk II title game against Huntington. First starting pitcher Mike Knapp and then reliever Frank Vespa made pitches when their backs were firmly against the wall. They left runners at the corners in the first inning and the third inning, stranded bases loaded in the fourth inning and the sixth inning and runners at 2nd & 3rd in the 7th. They held on by the skin of their teeth by the score of 3-2. Division’s Head Coach Tom Tuttle said that’s what they expect from their staff: “At Division that’s what our pitchers are expected to do – we ta...
Four games per week. Seven innings each game. Many teams all over Long Island are struggling with piecing together that many innings from their pitching staffs that are young and/or inexperienced. Manhasset is one of the few teams that enter 2021 with the opposite problem. Head Coach Mark Giardino stated they have seven pitchers that have great stuff and that they’re confident in to get outs. “To be honest, with the staff we have, we will determine our pitching rotation game-to-game,” said Giardino. “The first week we are going to try to get as many guys on the mound as possible,” he added. They will open up against Glen Cove, before a bye week leads them into a showdown against Division. Jake Moss (Manhasset 2022) up to 90 MPH with an average FB velocity of 8...
