OTD: Newfield Ends Postseason Drought Behind Kyle Johnson’s Gem

That was the last time the Newfield Wolverines competed in a playoff game. Today, the Stony Brook-commit pitched like he has been waiting 13 years to make the playoffs. The past two years were fresh in their memory all winter as they came just one win away from a postseason berth in ’16 and two wins last season. In 2018, however, they won the necessary 10 games within the first 11 games. “It feels awesome,” he said following the game. “We are going to enjoy this today–it’s been 13 years–but tomorrow we get right back to work and get ready f...

Newfield Looks To Bounce Back in 2020

In 2018, Newfield was spoiled with a bevy of power arms. On their varsity team, they had five pitchers that would commit to Division-I schools and two more that committed to Division-III schools. After graduating three of those pitchers, they were less equipped to handle a significant injury to one of their three horses. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what would happen when Chandler Giovinco went down prior to the season and required Tommy John surgery. The injury was not just a crushing blow to the pitching staff, but he also led the team with 3 HR and 26 RBI the previous season. Additionally, it was a senior that was in a leadership role. “Losing Giovinco killed us,” said Eric Joyner, now entering his fifth year at the helm. “Not just on the mound but at the plate....

Q & A With Mike Prisco

Newfield has established themselves as one of the teams with elite talent in Suffolk County. This was not always the case–which makes this era that much more significant in their program’s history. You could count on one hand the Division-I athletes they had during the period when I was in high school 2006-2009. Now, you can’t count on one hand how many Division-I athletes they had in 2018 because that would be six. With Mike Prisco‘s verbal commitment to Albany yesterday that means their 2018 League Champion team had six Division-I commits. That is a remarkable number for any team. I had a chance to speak with Prisco and here’s what he had to say… Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Albany? My experience...

Anthony Jacabacci Delivers Strong Outing In East Coast Jays Victory

by Matt Dzenawager The East Coast Jays won a tight game Wednesday evening thanks to their stellar pitching. The Jays allowed just two hits in a 2-1 victory against the Rising Star Junior Ducks. Lefty Anthony Jacabacci took the hill for the Jays and delivered. Jacabacci pitched three scoreless innings, giving up no hits, allowing only two players to reach base. Ducks number three-hitter Mike Prisco got on base after Jacabacci hit him with a pitch in the top of the first and Ryan Micheli reached base after a dropped 3rd strike in the top of the second.   Leo Alvarez came in relief for the Jays in the fourth inning. Alvarez pitched three innings, gave up one run, and allowed two singles. The two singles were the only hits for the Ducks throughout the game. The one run that Alvarez conceded wa...
