Hills West captured a share of the League V title in 2019 with Hauppauge as they both finished with a record of 11-4. They went on to lost two playoff games to Shoreham-Wading River by the scores of 9-7 and 4-3. That year’s team was led by the Silver Slugger Award winner of Suffolk County, infielder Mike Draskin who is now at Adelphi University. Another key contributor was Aidan Tornquist, who is now at Fordham University. This year’s team will have a big senior class. The seniors include; Alex Au, Brian Bentz, Ryan Connelly, Mike Freda, Joe Genzardi, Jordan Goldstein, Jack Rovner, Aaron Rubin and Josh Waldman. One of the beauties of attending a showcase is that it affords you the opportunity to display your skills in front of coaches that otherwise wouldn’t see you. When you combine an event like Saturday’s Blue Chip Prospect unsigned senior showcase with a platform like Axcess Baseball, I think it’s a winning combination. Yesterday was a great event because there was about 40 seniors that are looking to play college baseball and about a dozen local schools that are looking for quality players. Considering the circumstances that these players have had to endure during their biggest year of high school baseball, it’s definitely worth being in attendance. As is always the case, a number of kids really stood out and I’m really glad that I’m hopefully able to prov...
This year more than any year, uncommitted players are looking at the calendar and getting nervous about where they will play at the college level. That’s human nature, worrying if you missed your short. I’ve been there, plenty of players have been there. But here’s the good news: schools are always looking for good players. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pandemic. If you can play at the collegiate level, they will make room. Without further ado, here’s the list of the top uncommitted players on Long Island from the 2021 class. Brendan Williams, West Hempstead Alright so this is becoming an all-time duel. Williams strikes out his 12th batter of the day (against the top-ranked team in the region) allowing just one hit. Ventimiglia is back out for the 7th with...
With an elite Head Coach such as Tom Migliozzi, sometimes a team can catapult from playoff contender to League Champions. That is precisely what happened last year when Hills West took a team with two seniors and two freshmen and tied for the League 5 with Eastport-South Manor. Migliozzi, now in his 27th season at the helm, has 394 wins and 11 league titles to his name. He has the uncanny ability of maximizing the ability of players. Winning a league title with two starting freshmen is no small task. True to his personality, he was not willing to take credit for it. “A major part of our success last year came from senior Ethan McMenamy‘s ability to lead them,” said Migliozzi. “We were in search for a leader, he helped instill a good culture within the team,” h...
Mike Freda following the 9-3 victory. He hit the bases clearing triple in the sixth to break the game open pic.twitter.com/ogUNiSt5iY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 24, 2018 With the bases loaded, one out and Mike Freda at the plate, the game was at a critical point as the Body Armor were holding onto a 6-3 lead over the East End Aviators. Coax a double play and there would still be hope. Instead, the powerful catcher rippled one just inside the third-base line and it rolled all the way to the wall allowing all three base runners to score as he scampered all the way to third. “I was just sitting fastball, waiting and I drove it down the line,” said the rising sophomore at Hills West. The game was close up until that inning when the Titans put up four runs to essent...
