Boston College-commit Mikey Florides ripped a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0 and Carlos Hidalgo followed with an opposite field RBI triple to right center to make it 5-0. “The guys really had a great approach,” said Head Coach Bryan Goelz. “They work...
It’s been quite a year for Massapequa‘s young phenom Johnny Castagnozzi. Six months ago he became the first freshman to start on varsity under Head Coach Tom Sheedy and today he announced his verbal commitment to play for the University of North Carolina. He was weighing the possibility of attending Vanderbilt and Notre Dame as well. In between, he also helped the Chiefs to the Class AA Long Island Championship over Commack. One year ago today, we published a feature story on him, just after he put his name on the map by getting ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the 2020 class in the entire state of New York. Originally a SS, he was moved to third due to the presence of LIU Post-commit Chris Wasson. Castagnozzi is a very humble individual that lets his play do the talking. We sel...
The Massapequa Chiefs and Garden City Trojans both faced elimination this afternoon–both won in blowout fashion to force a winner-take-all Game 3 on Tuesday. The Chiefs defeated the Plainview Hawks in game one of the double header at SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 10-1. For the second consecutive year, Massapequa is headed to game 3 of the county championship. Last year, the Chiefs fell to the East Meadow Jets in the do-or-die game 3. This year they’re hoping to be on the other end of the spectrum. “Last year was very upsetting, we thought we should’ve won the county championship but we ended up losing to a very good East Meadow team, but this year we’re even more determined. After the win we’re in the same spot as last year but now we’re very con...

Another week, another new team at No. 5 in the power rankings. Oceanside sweeping Massapequa was the highlight of baseball this week in Class AA. With two weeks left in the regular season, let’s take a look at the top 5. 5. East Meadow (9-5-1) (Last week: 4) After splitting with Herricks last week, the Jets find themselves hanging on for dear life in the top 5. As oppose to last week in which they scored 14 runs in 3 games, they only scratched across 8 runs in 3 games this week. East Meadow will look to bounce back this week in a series with Long Beach. 4. Pitching is clearly a stronghold for this Farmingdale team, as they haven’t given up more than 6 runs all season. Not only do the Dalers have a strong rotation, but they have a talented bullpen as well, led by Anthony Burriesci. After their bye week, the Dalers have their toughest series of the season coming up against Massapequa. 4) East Meadow (8-4) (Last week: Unranked) The defending county champions are finally back in the top 5...
