Nassau County Class AA Playoff Preview (Plus Predictions)

Ah, playoffs. The time of year we find out who rises to the top. In Class AA, there are no longer any play-in games, as it’s headed straight to the quarterfinals for a three-game series. There is a long way to go until the County Championship, but for now, let’s break down the remaining eight teams. Quarterfinals: #8 Baldwin vs. #1 Port Washington Considering Port Washington just swept Baldwin last week, this seems like an obvious choice. However, it’s playoffs.  Anything can happen. The main focal point throughout the postseason for the top-seeded Port Washington Vikings will be their pitching. Last week, they held Baldwin to two earned runs in three games. Their rotation consisting of Alex Chang, Derek Livingston and Jackson Sattinger shut down Baldwin last week, so exp...

Oceanside Counters Massapequa’s Late Comeback, Wins 7-6

Chris Siklas is our @BsbLifestyle101 player of the game after giving his team the lead in the top of the 7th. He finished with three hits & 3RBI. pic.twitter.com/CPe1GF7wHW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 30, 2019 Every time Massapequa and Oceanside meet, it’s always a treat. As predicted, Tuesday afternoon’s game did not disappoint by any means. In a game for the ages, Oceanside topped Massapequa by a score of 7-6 to take game two of the series. This wasn’t a normal win by any means for Oceanside, this was the result of a hard fought battle. After suffering a tough loss on Monday, the Sailors wasted no time getting runs on the board. In the opening frame of the game, Austin Vlahakis started the Oceanside rally with an RBI single to left field. The next b...

Justin Rosner Fires Complete Game Over Massapequa

By Nick Frigerio Final: Farmingdale 4, Massapequa 1 WP: Justin Rosner (CG, 7 K) pic.twitter.com/kCKD7ax023 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 15, 2019 After a rough opening series against Oceanside last week, the Farmingdale Dalers were looking to get back in rhythm, as they took on rival Massapequa. The Dalers got just what they needed from their ace Justin Rosner, against a team that put up 71 runs last week against Hempstead. Rosner faced a tough Massapequa lineup and he was dominant as he struck out 7 and only allowed 1 earned run through 7 innings, in a 4-1 victory. From the start, it was obvious that Justin Rosner and Farmingdale were in control of this game. After a scoreless top half of the first, Massapequa had a runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of ...

Nassau County Class AA Preseason Power Rankings

With just a week until the official opening day, all teams will have a chance to compete in non-league action within the next few days. This year will be an interesting year in Class AA, as there are only 12 teams. Massapequa comes into the season looking to defend their back-to-back county championships, but will have their hands full in a tough conference AA1. With that being said, here are the top eight teams in Class AA. 8. Freeport After a 5-2 victory over Bellmore JFK in non-league action to begin their season, Freeport seems to be on the right track as far as competing. Not only can everyone in their lineup work the count, but they can hit to all sides of the field. On the mound, Ronny Vicente will anchor the rotation. Viandy Abreu, Roberto Lizardo and Nelson Lozano will lead their ...

Who Are The Top Remaining Uncommitted 2019s Available?

Randall Alejo, RHP, Pat-Med One theme that I have found common with Pat-Med players is that they are always wired a certain way. They are never fazed by the pressure spots, even when they are not necessary “supposed to be there”. Prime example: May 19, 2017, Pat-Med is ranked No. 14 and playing against No. 3 Hills East. It’s not just the ranking, but the fact that they were playing on the road and facing Vanderbilt-commit and Axcess Baseball‘s No. 1 ranked prospect on Long Island, Matt Hogan. Alejo outpitched the future Carl Yastrzemski Award winner and shocked the baseball community with a huge upset. Now a senior and named to our Pre-Season All-Long Island list with his 88 MPH fastball, Alejo has a chance to be an All-County pitcher. For a contemporary comparison,...

Oceanside Hoping To Take the Final Step

For the past couple years, Oceanside knows they’ve had arguably the best team in the county. After finishing 16-2 in the regular season and winning their first four playoff games, it seemed destined for the Sailors to win it all last season. However, they came up short as they were swept by Massapequa in the County Championship. After appearing in the County Championship four out of the last five years and walking away with zero championships, Oceanside will be hungrier than ever this year to change their fortunes this season. How will they do so? Through experience and leadership. Led by an extremely talented group of seniors, Oceanside will use their past as a lesson to try and prevent defeat from happening again. Offensively, Oceanside will be led by a group of seniors that posses...

Farmingdale On The Verge Of A Potential County Championship Appearance

Over the past few years, Class AA has been controlled by dominant teams, followed by a few “on the bubble” teams. Constantly classified as an on the bubble team, Farmingdale is ready to change their fortune this season. “This year we need to get over that hill so we can look back, not up at our AA rivals which we have been battling with for the past number of years,” stated Head Coach Frank Tassielli. Following a 10-8 season where they fell to Oceanside in the semifinals, the Dalers know they are on the brink of a potential county championship appearance. Perhaps this is the year they finally get over that bump. The strength of this team is their pitching. Not only do they return several significant arms, but they can be considered one of best pitching staffs in Cla...

Massapequa’s Quest For A Three-Peat In Full Effect

Massapequa is the 2018 NY Class AA Champs ! pic.twitter.com/c8IsF0PYDc — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 9, 2018 There are a number of programs on Long Island that have never won a county championship. Some of them might never experience it. For Massapequa Head Coach Tom Sheedy, who has won eight since 2006, winning championships has essentially become a tradition. Not only is this number impossible to fathom, but it goes to show how consistent and dedicated his program is to being the best on Long Island every single year. He rarely disappoints. Last year, Massapequa started the season off 4-5. Fast forward to May, and they finished with a record of 22-6, including a perfect 8-0 postseason. Coming off two consecutive Class AA Long Island championships and a 2018 state cham...

Johnny Castagnozzi: What I’m Thankful For

(Editor’s Note: Johnny Castagnozzi is a 2020 graduate of Massapequa HS. He was the first player in Tom Sheedy’s tenure to start as a 9th grader. All he’s done is lead them to back-to-back Class AA Long Island Championships including a NYS Class AA Championship this past June. He committed to the University of North Carolina as a sophomore. The following words are his own…) Thanksgiving is a time of year to look back on the many things that we have in our lives that we appreciate. For me there are so many things that come to mind. First, I have been blessed with an incredible family. They support me in every aspect of my life. My Mom and Dad who do everything possible to help me to develop as an athlete and as a person. They’ve given me strength even when things are ...

Massapequa Edges Oceanside In Crucial Game One Victory

Year in year out, when Massapequa plays Oceanside in playoffs it’s never as good as advertised, it’s better. On Saturday afternoon, Massapequa squeaked by Oceanside by a score of 6-5 to capture the game one victory. They’re now one win away from repeating as county champions in consecutive years. Earlier in the season when these two teams played, Oceanside flat out embarrassed Massapequa in game one of the series as they won by a score of 13-0. However, this wasn’t the case yesterday. Oceanside jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a Leo Alvarez RBI. He finished the day cashing in all 5 RBI for Oceanside. In the first inning, it seemed as if Brendan McFall was going to shut out Massapequa once again, as he struck out the first three batters...

Who Would’ve Won a Long Island World Series?

One of the things I would change about the state of baseball in our region is that I would eliminate the New York State tournament in favor of a three-game series between the winner of Class AA and A on Long Island. Why? Because the tournament is hosted in Binghamton and with the exception of the teams that qualify, very few people are able to make the four-hour drive upstate. That is a shame that the players invest all the blood, sweats and tears and then they play in front of a sparse crowd. I think it would’ve been so much more fascinating to see a three-game series between Massapequa and Wantagh to see who the true champions of Long Island are rather than having a large-school and small-school champion. Wantagh was talented enough to play in Class AA the past two years and it wou...

Recap of Stony Brook’s Scout Day

6’6″ Greg Marino is coming off a great year and is up to 88-90 MPH with his heater. Certainly a potential draft candidate pic.twitter.com/d5UKWGTEoS — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 16, 2017 This afternoon I was at Stony Brook University to watch their Scout Day, which was attended by at least 20 MLB scouts from across the region. Stony Brook is one of the few teams in the region that consistently have their players selected in the MLB Draft. This year should be no different, as they have a handful of players that are draft-eligible. Additionally, they have younger players that could garner interest in the coming years. Below is my observations from the workout. Dylan Resk (JR) is a 6’1″ power-hitting outfielder that smacked 13 HR last year and drove...
