Up Next: Travis Honeyman

He might’ve only been in sixth grade at the time, but Travis Honeyman vividly remembers watching his older brother, Bobby, star for the Massapequa Chiefs in the early part of the decade. “I went to every home game and I just remember saying ‘I can’t wait for when it’s my turn,’ said the now-15-year-old. With the Chiefs taking home the 2017 Long Island Class AA championship this year, Travis–now in ninth grade but playing on the JV10 team–is closer to making that goal a reality. “I’m even more excited now,” he said. In fact, he was able to live vicariously through his two best friends who were called up. Both of them, Johnny Castagnozzi and Chris DeSousa, are supremely talented players that will be part of the next wave of el...

Chris Wasson Walks-Off, Sends Chiefs on to Nassau County AA Finals

Chris Wasson rips walk-off single to send Massapequa to the Nassau County Class AA Finals ! pic.twitter.com/bZJmKM6U0t — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2017 By Joe Morris The Massapequa Chiefs advanced to the Nassau County Championship on Wednesday in walk-off fashion, with LIU Post-commit Chris Wasson coming up in the clutch hitting the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning. It was playoff baseball at its best, from exceptional pitching, to plays at the plate and timely hitting that all culminated in a thrilling walk-off win for the Chiefs in 11 innings, clinching a spot in the Championship against Plainview-JFK. Both teams got on the board early, as defensive mistakes from the Chiefs set up the Sailors first baseman Chris Siklas for a...

Nassau County Class AA Power Rankings (5th Edition)

Everything went as expected this past week in Class AA, causing only slight alterations in the rankings–basically the top teams stayed hot . With a week of little to no surprises at all, let’s take a look to see if there was any mix up in this week’s power rankings. 5. Calhoun (10-5) (Last week: 4) Non-league games often are a chance for coaches to get inexperienced players playing time and have some fun. However, when you lose a non-league game against a team that’s 2-13 on the season, there’s no excuse for losing. Calhoun lost to Bellmore JFK 5-3 during their bye week, which could result in negative momentum riding into their last week of the season. Sophmore Jake Edwards will look to continue to dominate at the plate this week against Valley Stream Central....

Dan Gdanski Comes Within One Out of No-Hitter, Massapequa Wins Opener 6-0

Massapequa RHP Dan Gdanksi could not have scripted this one any better. The Cortland-commit came within one-out of throwing a no-hitter in his first varsity start. He allowed a double with two outs in the seventh but struck out the final batter to finish off a masterful 6-0 one-hit shutout in the season opener against Syosset. “A win is our first priority,” said the senior RHP. “I pitched pretty well–I was hitting my spots today. My defense did a great job behind me. We just played together as a team today,” he added. It was a pitcher’s duel early on. Syosset’s Griffin Laine pitched very well through four innings, allowing just a single to DH James Zupo. Massapequa Head Coach Tom Sheedy knew the team would be very excited on Opening Day and did not...

Business as Usual For Massapequa

It takes a very strong-willed team to knock Massapequa out of the playoffs. Even after allowing five runs in the first inning against East Meadow in Nassau County Class AA finals, they fought back and got the tying runs on base in the last inning but was unable to get the clutch hit to tie it up. No. 3 seed East Meadow was crowned Class AA champions before losing to West Islip in the Long Island Championship. Massapequa Head Coach Tom Sheedy, now in his 14th year, will be going to battle in 2017 with another strong team–albeit without a couple of the key cogs from last year’s 19-win team. The big losses are two pitchers, Chris Keenan and Patrick Clyne. “Pat really developed into a super pitcher,” said Sheedy. “He came up as a sophomore and was All-State for us...
