Phil Krpata was named Most Outstanding Player of the Skyline Conference Tournament pic.twitter.com/kYcnEpqQIr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2023 by Gabe Zoda Mother’s Day is always filled with celebration. That was the case for St. Joseph’s University after winning the Skyline Conference Championship on Sunday. Their win over SUNY Maritime marked the Golden Eagles’ second straight title and 4th in 7 seasons (2016, 2018, 2022, 2023). The action in the game would start up in the top of the 2nd inning for St Joseph’s, scoring four in the frame. John Lynch led things off with a double to left center field. James Maggio would drive him in and replace his spot at second with a double of his own, scoring the game’s first run. The Golden Eagles would keep the scoring going in the inning with a slap shot by Hermes Abreu, driving in Maggio to make it 2-0 early. After Abreu’s single, Phil Krpata, Paul Gugliuzzo, and Jake Giannico would hit back to back to back singles. Gugliuzzo and Giannico’s were both RBI’s giving St Joseph’s a 4-0 lead. Maritime took no time to respond as they would plate two in the bottom of the 2nd. Jaden Shea got on base for the Privateers with a single. This set the stage for Micheal Frazzetta, who would launch a ball deep to left field and out of the ballpark for a 2-run HR. After no runs in the 3rd inning for either team, St Joseph’s tacked on another run in the 4th inning. Phil Krpata kicked it off with a walk. A walk for some could be harmless, but not for Phil Kirpata. He is known for his baserunning abilities and his speed and showed it off in the 4th inning. He stole second and third base with one out, allowing him to be one fly ball away from scoring. That was all Paul Gugliuzzo needed as we would send one into the outfield, allowing Krpata to score and increase the lead to 5-2 in favor of St. Joe’s. Once again though, this Maritime squad would not give up. They responded in the bottom of the 4th with two more runs. This time, both of these runs came off the bat from Rob Copozzi, who launched a 2-run shot of his own. This one going to right center field. After the launch, the Privateers cut the lead down to 5-4 after four innings. It was at this point that St Joseph’s would change the complexion of this game. Ryan Decoursey led off the inning with a single. John Lynch quickly followed him up by getting hit by a pitch. James Maggio stepped up to the plate after them and ripped a one out, 2-RBI, double scoring both Decoursey and Lynch. They weren’t done yet in the inning, as Nick Vicino drove in Maggio with a single of his own to make it 8-4. St Joseph’s did not want to play two games for the championship and their bats showed it. Following the Vicino RBI, The Golden eagles would work 3 straight walks by Krpata, Gugliuzzo and Giannico. The walk to Jake Giannico scored the Golden Eagles ninth run of the game. After four and a half innings, St. Joseph’s University led Maritime by a score of 9-4. FINAL: St. Joseph’s: 10 Maritime: 4 Micheal Manzillo pitched 5 innings of scoreless relief and retired 12 of the 15 batters he faced. James Maggio had 3 RBIs today. Went 2-5 in the game pic.twitter.com/4E7hEaQVoK — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2023 The bottom of the 5th was when the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen and brought out Micheal Manzolillo, who personified the definition of shutdown. Manzolillo completely muted the Maritime offense, inducing both weak contact and strikeouts to slice through the Privateer lineup. Manzolillo pitched 5 scoreless innings in relief and retired 12 of the 15 batters he faced. St Joseph’s scored one more run in the top of the 8th inning when John Lynch scorched a single through the left center field gap, driving in Ryan Decoursey (who reached on a single). This made the score 10-4, and Manzolillo would close the door in the bottom of the 9th to win the Skyline Conference Championship. Phil Krpata was named the Skyline Conference Most Outstanding Player during the postseason. He showcased how he is the perfect leadoff batter with his speed and his ability to get on base.

(Editor’s Note: This is the sixth installment of our “College Recruiting 101 Powered by 1 More Rep Athletics & Fitness” in which we delve into the world of college baseball recruiting. In the first edition we spoke to five fathers who sent their sons to Division-I programs. In the next edition, we spoke to three fathers who are also coaches that had to navigate through the pandemic. In the third edition, we spoke with Glenn Petraitis, who had two sons go through the college recruiting process and is an Emmy-award winning Sports Producer for MSG and NBC Olympics. His younger son, AJ, is a freshman at Le Moyne College. Next, we spoke with George Mason University assistant coach Matt Marsh, who is a Long Island native about his process of recruiting players. In last week’s edition, we spoke to Joe Palumbo, owner of 1MR and Knights Empire regarding his experience with the college recruiting process for his son, JJ who is entering his senior season at Clarke HS and is committed to Purchase College. And in this week’s edition, we speak with SUNY Maritime Head Coach Charlie Barbieri, who led the Privateers to the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship.) I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… When did you initially get into coaching? My first varsity position was as an assistant under Mike Lesak at Herricks from 2005-2006. From there, I became the head coach at Midwood High School in Brooklyn from 2007-14. In 2015, I was named the head coach at Maritime College and have been there ever since. I’ve also had the fortune of coaching some high level summer teams. From 2011-2014, I coached the Miami Marlins Scout Team, which rostered 6 current major league players! In 2018 I coached in the Hamptons League with the Westhampton Aviators and from 2019-2021 I coached the Vermont Mountaineers of the prestigious New England Collegiate Baseball League. Those were both great opportunities to be around high level collegiate players. What are some intangible qualities that you look for when you’re recruiting a player? Two of the most important qualities I look for in recruits are young men of high character and guys who are great teammates. Our players have created an incredible team culture at Maritime and we want incoming players to be in alignment with our core values. We need guys are want to excel not only on the baseball field, but in the classroom and in the community as well. I also want student athletes who are self motivators and have a strong work ethic. At the D3 level, we are limited as to how much time we can spend with our players in both the offseason and during the season per NCAA rules. That being said, our guys have to be willing to put in the work on their own. The weight room is also a BIG part of our program, so our players must enjoy competing in there as well! What are some physical qualities that you look for when recruiting a position player ? Pitchers? For position players we ideally want players that possess athleticism. Those guys are usually fast movers — bat speed, arm speed, quickness, ability to run etc. — and can help you succeed on the field in a number of different ways. I also look for guys who are on time when they hit. If you have trouble getting on time consistently, it’ll be challenging to succeed at the college level. Lastly, and arguably most important, I’m looking for hitters that find barrels often. Quite simply, we want guys who consistently hit the ball hard! For pitchers, the number one thing we look for are guys that can command the strike zone with multiple pitches. Lineups at the college level are significantly deeper than the high school level, so being able to successfully locate multiple pitches is imperative. Velocity is another important aspect of what we look for in our pitching recruits. Although not always directly correlated to success, our guys need to be able to keep hitters from getting too comfortable in the batter’s box. Lastly, we 100% need a bulldog on the mound. I want a guy who wants the ball in a big spot!!! That’s an innate quality that you can’t teach. What are some events that you like to attend to recruit players? I’ve learned to value recruiting events that emphasize game play as opposed to the “showcase style” events. For me, it’s more beneficial seeing recruits play in competitive situations compared to a scripted workout. I can learn more from multiple AB’s or innings pitched in one game then I can from 20 BP swings or a pitcher’s bullpen with no hitter in the box! Competing at game speed is incomparable. Games also allow me to see how players interact with coaches, teammates, opponents, and umpires. I can also gauge how they respond to their success and failure on the field, which carries a lot of weight in our recruiting process. How important is academics when recruiting a player ? Academics are absolutely vital and the first step in our recruiting process at Maritime. Our academic program is a demanding and rigorous one, so it’s often challenging for freshmen to make the immediate transition to our college. To piggyback on that, we are looking for student athletes who we feel are likely to have sustained success in the classroom over four years. If our players are struggling to stay locked in academically, it will be virtually impossible to balance school and baseball simultaneously, so we need to see a pattern of success in the high school classroom to even consider them in our recruiting process. During COVID , how were you able to find players and evaluate them? Although challenging, we were able to still recruit during COVID. We did rely more on video then we had in the past. We were also fortunate to benefit from coaches who would put on virtual events/showcases that would allow us to watch games from home on our computers. We did have the benefit of getting out to a handful of tournaments that were run locally as well. Have the rosters gone back to normal yet following the pandemic ? Fortunately our roster was honestly not affected by the pandemic, so we’ve basically stayed status quo in that regard. What would you say are some of the biggest changes in the recruiting landscape since you began coaching ? There are a few that stick out in my mind but the most prominent change is the transfer portal. As a coach, it allows you access to players who may be able to help contribute to your program at a high level immediately. So in essence, you can reload as a program quicker as opposed to going through a rebuild. Another change I’ve noticed is the evolution in players’ mindset from the “D1 or bust” mentality. Kids are starting to realize they can get top notch degrees, still play at a high level of competition and have a chance to contribute right away by going to a D2, D3 or JUCO. If you’re good enough to play at the professional level, they’ll find you!

Division-I St. John’s lost to UCONN, 4-3, to open up their weekend series. They led 3-1 in the 7th, but the Huskies scored on a squeeze to cut the deficit to two and then in the 8th, a two-run go-ahead double by Kyler Fedko (3-for-5), gave them the lead. Carson Bartels drew a walk in the 9th but they were unable to get him around to score. Austin Peterson earned his sixth win of the season. Joe Joe Rodriguez was tagged with the loss. The Johnnies had 10 hits but struck out 13 times and stranded 8 runners on base. They fell to 14-16 on the season and will play a DH today beginning at 12. Hofstra lost to Northeastern, 13-1, as they have now allowed 35 runs over the past two games. Jack Jett was tagged with the loss, he allowed 7 ER over 6 IP, yielding 11 hits and 3 walks. Ryan Morash and Santino Rosso each had two hits for the Pride. They dropped to 15-16 on the season. The Pride will look to turn things around today in their DH beginning at 11. LIU defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 5-0. The Sharks scored all of their runs in the fifth inning – RBI singles by Chris Wasson, Gio Ciaccio, Andy Camilo and Cade Biddle (3-for-4). Alec Huertas went the distance, firing a six-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks. He needed just 106 pitches. They are now 15-12, and will be off until next Friday when they travel to face Farleigh-Dickinson. Division-II: Adelphi ran their win streak to 5 games, as they improve to 15-12 on the season. They swept Pace by the scores of 13-12 and 7-2. In Game 1, they erased an early 5-0 deficit. Mike Draskin‘s grand slam in the 8th inning was the difference. Michael Storms was awarded his 3rd win of the season. Steven Murphy notched his first save of the season. Draskin had two hits, drove in six runs. Jack Ryan had three hits and drove in two runs. Matt Alifano and Tim Feliz each had two hits as well. In Game 2, Max Steele went the distance, going seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Jack Ryan‘s three-run HR in the first inning was all he needed. Kyle Olson and Matt Alifano each had two hits. Adelphi will close out the regular season today with another DH against Pace at 12. Queens split with College of Staten Island. They won game one, 7-5, but losing game 2, 17-5. In the win, they trailed 3-0 in the fifth inning but Brad Sakellarides hit a two-run single and Jayson Rodopoulos hit a two-run double to give them a lead in which they would not relinquish. Dean Fazah went 5.1 IP, allowing three ER with five strikeouts. They will close out their regular season today on Senior Day with another DH against CSI. Molloy split with Mercy, dropping the first game but winning the second game, 1-0. In the victory, the lone run scored on an RBI double by Thomas Brady to score Matt Overton. Charlie Cucchiara continued his terrific season with a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits, walking none and striking out five. He needed just 89 pitches, he improved his record to 3-2 and dropped his ERA to 1.95.They will play Mercy again today at home beginning at noon. Division-III: USMMA defeated Maritime, 9-2, in the opening round of the Skyline Conference tournament. The game was essentially put the bed in the first inning when they scored four runs in the top half with ace Joe Raab on the mound. The senior southpaw would not need much support today – coming off his no-hitter last week against Farmingdale. He went five innings, striking out 8, walking none and yielding 5 hits. My assumption is he would be available in a potential Championship situation. Jack McCann had 3 RBI which came on a bases clearing triple in the 3rd to break the game open. Ryan Ragone was tagged with the loss. Old Westbury shut out St. Joseph’s, 3-0, behind a gem from Tim Woodford – who pitched for SJC the past three seasons. Woodford is now 4-0 on the season with a 0.79 ERA. Shaun Kaminski gave Old Westbury the lead with an RBI double to score John Dell’Olio and Oscar Fajardo opened it up with a two-run shot. They will face USMMA at 1pm in the winner’s bracket game. The loser will play an elimination game against Maritime right after. Maritime won their elimination game against St. Joseph’s College – which they also did in 2019. St. Joseph’s led 2-0 until the top of the 7th when Maritime tied it up on an infield single by Xavier Cruz and an RBI single by Jake Bernardi. In the 9th, Jaden Shea executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Adam Mosca and give the Privateers the lead. Matt Paghidas was nails in relief, firing 5.1 shutout innings to earn the win. Anthony Cinquemani was tagged with the loss for the Golden Eagles who had their season ended.

Editor’s Note: Chris Deddo is a 2018 graduate of SUNY Maritime. He was a major reason in why the Privateers were able to turn a dormant program into Skyline Conference Champs in 2017. He participated in our 2018 Axcess Invitational, shortly after joining the United States Marines. The following words are his own…) In May of 2018, I found myself pinning on the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and becoming a member of the most lethal fighting force in the world. The United States Marines. The decision to become a leader of Marines was something that did not just happen overnight. It was a long process that started from when I was a little kid. I was fortunate to be surrounded by a family of people who dedicated their life to service. My father Michael Deddo Jr., retired from the NYPD with 32 years of distinguished service and my mother, Jennifer Deddo, who currently works as a nurse in the New York City public school system. It is because of them that I am successful as an officer today. Furthermore, seeing my brother Michael Deddo III go through the United States Military Academy and commission as an officer in the United States Army really made me decide that I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Being able to serve in the military alongside my brother is an honor that I am grateful for every day. Once I made the decision to join, it was time to train and prepare for the job that would that would change my life. This training all started at Maritime College. Maritime allowed me to develop as a leader on and off the baseball field. From the President of the college, Rear Admiral Michael A. Alfultis, all the way to the Regimental Officers and amazing Merchant Mariners I was always around, I learned what it meant to be dedicated to a cause, and what real leadership looked like. Maritime College allowed me to be a part of a family that extends from the current students to all of the alumni. We all share a bond of dedication and a love of something that it bigger than ourselves. My development as an officer wouldn’t be complete if it wasn’t for baseball. There are two people I contribute my success on and off the field to. Kevin Hughes and Charlie Barbieri. Kevin Hughes was my hitting coach for over ten years and instilled the “blue collar” mindset that was crucial for me in order to play the game the right way. He made me understand that no matter what the score is or what inning it was, you always play the game hard and hustle on and off the field because you never know who is watching. This lesson has stuck with me to this day and is a large reason on why I have been successful in life. One more life changing opportunity was coaching Aces Baseball with Kevin. This furthered my development and gave me an understanding of how to mentor young men on and off the field, I am thankful to Levinson family and Aces Baseball for that opportunity. One of the first things I told Coach Barbieri my freshmen year at Maritime was that we were going to win a conference championship together, and we did exactly that. Coach Barbieri allowed me to develop as a leader in ways I cannot even put into words. His guidance and freedom to allow myself and my teammates to lead the team the way that we wanted was a main reason that Maritime Baseball turned around and had instant success. I look back at my time with Coach Barbieri and remember nothing but dedication and enthusiasm for a program that has limitless potential and I envy all of the players that currently play for him. As May 2018 came, and I commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, I started my career with six months of training in Quantico, Virginia where I found out I would become a logistics officer with 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, in Camp Pendleton, California. Serving in this storied Marine Corps unit, I find myself working with the best men and women this nation has to offer. Working for Marines who have countless years of combat experience in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, they show me on a daily basis what it means to be a superior officer and how to lead junior Marines the right way. No matter how difficult the training is, or how “tough” a situation may seem, we as Marines are always in it together and the person that matters is the Marine to the left and right of you. We are a family and I would do anything for my brothers and sisters. Lastly, on this Veteran’s Day I would like to thank all of my family members who have served and are currently serve in the military, Elizabeth Wells (US Air Force), Stephen M Wells Jr (US Army), Stephen M Wells III (US Army), Stephen M Well IV (US Marines), Stewart Wells (US Marines), Jeffery Wells (US Army), Lawrence Marcario (US Army), Matthew Nolan (US Marines), Michael Deddo Sr (US Air Force), Joseph M. Deddo (US Army), Joseph LaFranca (US Army) and finally my brother who is currently serving in Afghanistan, Michael Deddo III, stay safe brother.

It has been our mission at Axcess Baseball to shine a light on those programs and we do so by segments like the Fall Ball Series Presented by the Greene Turtle, or covering a double header in March, or having wall-to-wall coverage of the Skyline Conference tournament, or having the players compete in a Home Run Derby, or honored at an Awards Banquet.

Farmingdale, NY– It was a long day of baseball in day one of the Skyline Conference double-elimination tournament, but aside some rain delays and thick fog, there was no surprised. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: Alex Mesaros had the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning. Here he is speaking about the win pic.twitter.com/1PZk6ecroZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 3, 2019 Christian Tessitore and Andrew Spinnenweber squared off in a battle of hard-throwing RHPs. Merchant Marines got off to a quick 1-0 start in the second inning when Kyle Cunningham broke on contact with the infield drawn in on a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Matt Mundorf. It seemed aggressive, but his speed was the difference as he beat the throw home. They added another run in the second inning on an infield single off the bat of Vincenzo Alteri which scored Colin Baker. Spinnenweber came out with his best stuff, retiring the first nine batters in order without breaking a sweat but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Mike Manetta got things going with a single, and moved to second on Brandon Wilson‘s single. John Condon continued his red-hot season with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half. A walk to Peter Capel loaded the bases and Shaun Kaminski tied it up with an RBI single of his own. When it appeared Spinnenweber on the ropes, he did his best work of the day. He got a force at the plate and struck out the next two batters to leave the bases loaded. It did take him 37 pitches which took prevented him from firing a complete game. The USMMA offense went back to work in the fifth, though. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for DH Alex Mesaros. He came through with a huge bases-clearing double to score Garrett Aichele, Vincenzo Alteri and Kyle Cunningham. With a three-run lead, Spinnenweber was not about to let the game slip away for a second time. The All-American RHP allowed two singles in the sixth inning but escaped unscathed. He also threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two strikeouts. He finished his afternoon with nine strikeouts, one walk and six hits. Tessitore wound up going eight innings, but the damage was already done. Andrew Hunt threw a scoreless eighth inning and Cunningham came on to record his 12th save of the season to seal the deal. Game 2: Final: Farmingdale 12, Maritime 1 WP: Steven Burke Farmingdale will play USMMA at 10am. Winner of that punches their ticket to the championship pic.twitter.com/aq1Rf5EsZd — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 3, 2019 No. 1 seed Farmingdale sent Steven Burke to the mound. He allowed the first two runners to reach base, before striking out the next two batters. Joe Scerra hit a dribbler along the third base line that drove in Antonio Diaz to get Maritime on the board. That was all he would allow on this day. The College of St. Rose-transfer was lights-out for the remainder of his outing and the Farmingdale bats went to work right away. They put up a five-spot in the first inning. Mike Amandola tied up the game with an RBI single and Morgan McCarthy delivered the go-ahead two-run single to score him and Ryan DePalma. They added two more runs on an error by the third baseman. The Rams opened up a 7-1 lead in the second inning. Vinny Rice came up with two runners on and crushed the ball over the fence for what appeared to be a three-run home run, but in a bizarre play, it was ruled he did not touch home plate on his home run trot, which went down as a two-run triple. Regardless, the game was already broken up. The Rams added insurance runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Ryan Mallon fired a scoreless eighth and Logan Hicks took care of the ninth. The Rams notched 14 hits, with three hits apiece by McCarthy, Vin Napolitano and Amandola. It was their 30th win of the season. Later in the evening, Old Westbury defeated Maritime in an elimination game. Patrick Quinn fired a complete game shutout and the Panthers staved off elimination with a 7-0 victory to keep their season alive. They will face the loser of Farmingdale-USMMA in the second game of the day tomorrow. The pitching match up is expected to be Matthew Constantine and Joe Raab. The winner punches their ticket to the championship game on Sunday. The loser will need to play Old Westbury.

No.

Today begins the three-day, double-elimination Skyline Conference tournament at Farmingdale State College. The event was held there last year, as well as 2016. Both years the Championship was captured by St. Joseph’s College, but with Wednesday’s 10-9 loss at Maritime, they will not have a chance to do so this season. The first game will be held at 1pm, between No. 3 Old Westbury and No. 2 USMMA. Following that will be No. 4 Maritime and No. 1 Farmingdale State. The losers of those games will play at 7pm tonight in an elimination game. The winners will advance to play at 10am on Saturday. Let’s look at the two match ups. No. 3 Old Westbury @ No. 2 USMMA These two teams met on Sunday, April 14 at Old Westbury, with the teams splitting the double header. USMMA took Game 1, 5-2, while the Panthers captured the second game, 7-4. The one thing you will notice about that double header is that Andrew Spinnenweber did not pitch. Old Westbury will likely have to face USMMA’s ace this time around and that is not great news considering he was probably the best pitcher in the conference over the past two seasons. He went 5-0 with a 1.10 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 58 innings. Additionally, he compiled that while pitching against the top teams in the conference. When you dive deep into the numbers, it really tells the story of a lights-out pitcher. He allowed just five ER on the season, and he walked only 10 batters. Most impressively, he held the opposition to a batting average of .174, including four doubles, no triples and no home runs. He hit just one batter and threw three wild pitches. That is a pitcher that puts the ball where he wants to. With a big ballpark like Farmingdale, he does especially well because he pitches to the dimensions. When he pitched against Farmingdale, he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning with two outs before a dropped pop up and a seeing-eye single ended his no-hitter and shutout. Regardless, he’s a workhorse and I think his presence makes all the difference. He will face a lineup that scored 11 against Mount St. Vincent on Wednesday. They are swinging the bat well right now. Leading the charge is their middle-of-the-order sluggers Peter Capel and John Condon. The two lefties are the two leading hitters in the lineup. Condon is hitting .373 with 31 RBI, .432 OBP,, 12 walks and only 7 strikeouts. Capel is hitting .350 with 36 RBI, .440 OBP, 13 walks and 15 strikeouts. Leadoff batter Mike Manetta is hitting .337 and Brandon Wilson is right behind at .313. Manetta missed some time with a hamstring injury but he’s back to 100 percent. He will likely be opposed by Christian Tessitore, who they were able to avoid using in the play-in game, which benefits them today. Tessitore is an established pitcher who will not be fazed by the moment. The biggest challenge for him will be containing the league’s top-hitting team. Merchant Marine Academy hit .330. Six of their regulars eclipsed .330 led by the terrifying duo of Vincenzo Alteri and Jesse Reinebold. Both are north of .400 and have been all season. Aside from batting average, they both draw walks. Alteri’s OBP of .453 is eclipsed by Reinebold’s .466. That’s not even the highest on the team. That honor belongs to Matt Mundorf who reaches at nearly a 50 percent clip. Overall, the team’s .417 OBP essentially means they get on base at the same clip as Joey Votto. No. 4 Maritime @ No. 1 Farmingdale State These two teams met on Friday, April 19 at Maritime. The Rams swept the double header, 6-1 and 5-0. The Rams will either start Matthew Constantine or Steven Burke. Both have been equally dominant this season and have the experience to handle the big moment. Constantine is 7-1 with a 2 saves over 57.1 IP. He compiled 43 strikeouts against 10 walks and held opposing batters to 47 hits. Burke is 5-0 with a 1.53 ERA over 47.0 IP. My sense is that Constantine gets the Game 1 start, he showed what he was made of last year coming on in relief of David Otero and completely shutting down USMMA in the first game of the tournament. He will face a lineup that put up 10 runs on Wednesday, but Farmingdale’s defense does not figure to make miscues that allow for extra outs. The biggest challenge will be making sure that Travis Zurita can not hurt them. He leads the conference with six home runs and has driven in 34 runs. Eric Wenig, Ryan Rockhill and Adam Mosca all homered the other night as well so the lineup is far from a one-trick pony. The Privateers will either start Niko Concha or Travis Bruinsma. They will have to contain a lineup that is hitting .300 and led by one of the top hitters on Long Island, Vinny Rice. He is batting .419 with four HR and 20 RBI. He walks more than he strikes out and also was successful on 14 of his 15 stolen base attempts. Their lineup has contributors up-and-down plus guys on the bench. Fourteen players had 10+ hits and they have a team SLG % of .420. Prediction: I said in the fall and I will stick to my prediction now. Championship Sunday will feature USMMA and Farmingdale. These were the best two teams in the conference from day 1. They have no weaknesses. USMMA dispelled the notion that they had pitching depth issues behind Spinnenweber and Joe Raab right away and they also have a lights-out closer in Kyle Cunningham. It’s going to be a great match up, but I will go with my pre-season pick of Farmingdale State. The Rams will break through and capture their first Skyline Conference title since 2014.

If the regular season was any indication, we will be in for a treat. Here’s Wednesday’s match ups: No. 6 College of Mount Saint. Vincent @ No. 3 Old Westbury (4pm) No. 5 St. Joseph’s-LI @ No. 4 Maritime (7:30pm) Game 1: Team AVG: Mount Saint Vincent: .300 Old Westbury: .279 Runs Per Game: Mount Saint Vincent: 6.45 Old Westbury: 5.27 Team ERA: Mount Saint Vincent: 5.94 Old Westbury: 4.83 Team Defense: Mount Saint Vincent: 71 errors, .947 FLD% Old Westbury: 49 errors, .960 FLD% Getting to Know the Dolphins: The Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins enter with an overall record of 17-20 and 9-9 in Skyline Conference play. They have lost four consecutive games. They have an outstanding team AVG of .300, led by Massapequa 2018 grad Michael Grisanti (.398 AVG, 4 HR, 29 RBI, .487 OBP) and Jake Blinstrub (.353 AVG, 35 runs scored, 32 RBI, 14 stolen bases). Their best starting pitcher has been Hauppauge 2018 grad Peter Sanderson (4-2, 2.85 ERA, 2 CGs) and Amir Nitowski (4-4, 3.55 ERA). They swept Old Westbury in a DH on March 24, but before that the Panthers had defeated them 15-straight times. Getting to Know the Panthers: The SUNY Old Westbury Panthers enter with an overall record of 20-14-1 and 12-6 in conference play. They have won five consecutive games. They have a team AVG of .276, but they have four regulars over .300 (John Condon, Peter Capel, Mike Manetta and Brandon Wilson). Capel (36) and Condon (31) have been their biggest run producers. The pitching staff has been much better of late, and it’s especially strong with any of their frontline arms on the hill. Ace Christian Tessitore (3-3, 3.19 ERA, 36.2 IP) has been steady from day one and Adam Heidenfelder (3-1, 1.25 ERA) and Patrick Quinn (3-2, 4.15) have rounded out a solid rotation. Their go-to relievers are Joe Sarni (28.1 IP, 1.91) and Matt Bohenek (24.0 IP, 29 K). The winner of this game advances to the double elimination format to face No. 1 Farmingdale State at 1pm. Game 2: Team AVG: Maritime: .283 St. Joseph’s: .291 Runs Per Game: Maritime: 5.62 St. Joseph’s: 5.94 Team ERA: Maritime: 3.70 St. Joseph’s: 3.90 Team Defense: Maritime: 63 errors, .951 FLD% St. Joseph’s: 40 errors, .967 FLD% Getting to Know the Privateers: The SUNY Maritime Privateers enter with a record of 21-16 including 11-7 in conference play. They have lost three of their past four games. They have a team AVG of .283 led by Matt Eng (.371 AVG, 30 runs scored, .448 OBP, 33 stolen bases) and Travis Zurita (.323 AVG, 6 HR, 34 RBI, .400 OBP, 11 stolen bases), as well as Adam Mosca (.294 AVG) and Phil Russo (.281). Statistically, their two best starting pitchers have been senior A.J. Ammirati (2.36 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 45.2 IP) and freshman Niko Concha (2.49 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 43.1 IP). They feel very good about getting into a battle of the bullpens, as they have Skylar Graff (1.23 ERA) and Matt Paghidas (2.79 ERA). Getting to Know the Golden Eagles: The St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles enter with a record of 18-16 with a conference record of 9-9. They have won four consecutive games, and they have won two of the past three Skyline Conference championships. The offense has been led by Jesse Nakashian (.380 AVG, .465 OBP), Anthony Raucci (.340 AVG, .448 OBP) and Tyler Sanderson (.321 AVG, .449 OBP). The most impressive aspect of their offense is their plate discipline, they have five regulars with positive K:BB ratios. Their best starting pitcher has been Hauppauge 2017 grad Tim Woodford (6-1, 4 CG, 0.92 ERA, 49:6 K:BB ratio but their ace is Anthony Papa (2-2, 3.05 ERA) and he will likely get the start. Like Maritime, they feel confident in a battle of the bullpens, due to the presence of Anthony Caminiti who was the winning pitcher in the championship game last year. Both games will be very competitive, and with it being a one-and-done scenario, we are likely to see both coaches employ all-out bullpen strategies if need be to prevent any crooked innings early on.

Getting to Know the Privateers:

The SUNY Maritime Privateers enter with a record of 21-16 including 11-7 in conference play.

Getting to Know the Golden Eagles:

The St.

A terrific day of baseball yesterday featuring walk-off home runs, a no-hitter and a dramatic late-inning grand slam. To read the recap of our coverage of SUNY Maritime, click here. Let’s just right into the rest of the action. Division-I: As always, let’s start with Division-I. After falling yesterday, Stony Brook came out on top Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana, escaping with a 7-4 victory. Heading into the 5th inning, Stony Brook was trailing 3-1. Fast forward to the 6th inning and they held a 6-3 lead, thanks to a five-spot in the 5th. The five-run inning featured another Michael Wilson home run, as he delivered with a grand slam to put the Seawolves in a comfortable position to win the game. From this point forward, Stony Brook only allowed one more run over five innings of work. Offensively, Brandon Janofsky had a standout performance as he went 3-4 with an RBI. Brian Herrmann was credited with the win in this one, going five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and four punch outs. Brandon Bonanno picked up the two-out save. Stony Brook plays Southeastern Lousiana today at 2 PM in a rubber match. The slow start for Fordham finally saw a win, as the Rams defeated North Florida 8-5 in game one of their double header. From the beginning of this contest, Fordham seemed to be in control. Heading into the 7th inning, Fordham held a 5-4 lead. Needing a cushion, the Rams were able to deliver a three-spot to lead them to victory. Jake Mackenzie had a game to remember at the plate, going 4-5 out of the lead off spot with 2 RBI. Matt Tarabek and Nick Labella also finished with 2 RBI. Anthony Zimmerman got the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings. Gabriel Karslo picked up the save. After winning game one, the Rams dropped game two of the double header, 7-4. Right out of the gate, Fordham came out firing, putting up a four-spot in the first inning. This was highlighted by a Justin Bardwell thee-run home run. However, North Florida answered back and would tie the game up at four in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Unfortunately for the Rams, their bats stayed cold while North Florida’s heated up. Fordham wouldn’t score another run all game, and as a result suffered defeat. They complete their four-game series against North Florida today at 1:05 PM. Division-II: NYIT continues their read hot start under Head Coach Frank Catalanotto, as they defeated Franklin Pierce 7-2 in a combined no hitter. For the first time in school history, NYIT begins their season at 3-0. After struggling to find the zone in the first inning, Moises Robles settled in and dominated the Franklin Pierce lineup, going 5.1 innings allowing no hits, six walks and four strikeouts. Trailing 2-0 heading into the 3rd, NYIT put up a three-spot, followed by another run in the 4th inning. Holding a 4-2 lead, they never looked back. In total, they collected 14 hits throughout the game. Ryan Kuskowski led their offense, going 3-5 out of the DH spot. Ben McNeill finished with 2 RBI. Following Robles’ no-hit performance on the mound, Dean Fazah kept the streak going. He also finished his outing allowing no hits, over 3.2 innings of work. Clearly, this was an extremely impressive win for NYIT. They play Stonehill today at 9 AM for their final game in Myrtle Beach. LIU Post extended their winning streak to three on Saturday as they defeated Concordia 5-4. After surrendering two runs in the opening frame of the game, Post answered quickly with a four-spot in the bottom half of the first. This was highlighted by a 2 RBI single courtesy of Joe Piscitelli. Things would stay tied until the 5th inning, where Concordia tied the game at 4. With many opportunities, Post couldn’t take the lead. However, they came through when it mattered the most. With a runner in scoring position, Zach Fritz drove in the game winning run in walk off fashion, providing the Pioneers with another victory. He finished the day with two hits and two RBI. Brian Kavanaugh picked up the win in relief, pitching four scoreless innings and surrendering only three hits. LIU Post plays their final game in Myrtle Beach today at 9 AM. The slow start for Molloy continued on Saturday as they dropped both games of their double header. Their pitching and defense struggled significantly in game one, as they lost to Stonehill 10-7. Although they strung together 15 hits offensively, they couldn’t hold it together. Molloy came out of the gates firing, putting up a five-spot in the bottom half of the first inning. Jake McCarthy finished this game with 2 RBI, along with Mike Wall. After their offensive explosion in the first inning, the bats went cold. Stonehill took a 6-5 lead in the 5th inning, but Molloy was able to tie it up. Unfortunately, their bats could not keep up and their pitching and defense flat lined at the wrong time. In total, Molloy surrendered five errors. Following the errors came base hits, and Stonehill clearly took advantage of this throughout the game. In game two, Molloy suffered another blowout loss against Southern Connecticut by a score of 15-5. With the loss, they fall to 0-3 on the young season. Once again, their bats got off to a hot start, as they put up a four-spot in the bottom half of the 2nd inning to give them a lead early. At the plate, Molloy combined for nine hits. Thomas Brady led the Lions offense going 2-4 with 2 RBI at the plate. Mike Wall also had a multi-hit game, going 2-3 with an RBI. Although their bats seem to be starting off the season fairly hot, their pitching is running into some serious trouble. In total, they surrendered 20 hits and 12 earned runs. If they wish to compete in the ECC this year, they must make some adjustments. After their 7-7 tie on Friday, Queens swept their double header on Saturday. In game one, Queens defeated Nyack 8-4. Throughout this game, it was evident their bats were hot as they strung together 15 hits. Louis Antos continued to display his hot bat, as he finished 4-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and a walk. Eric Roubal and Jon Strauss both had strong games at the plate, as they recorded three hits each. On the mound, Dennis Buckstein was the winning pitcher. He started the game for Queens, allowing three hits and one earned run over five innings. Kevin Kochen picked up the save, firing 2.1 scoreless innings. In game two of their double header, the bats stayed hot for Queens as they walked out with a 13-11 victory. Obviously, this game was a back and forth offensive battle. In total, Queens had six different players combine for multi hit performances. All around, it was a great offensive display. Joe O’Rourke and Anthony Scotti both had 2 RBI in the victory. With the victory, Queens moves to 2-0-1 on the season. Their next game is March 4th against Concordia.

It ended a back-and-forth affair in which the Privateers erased an early 2-0 deficit. Ryan Serrato (3-for-3) hit a two-run shot off Privateers’ ace Travis Bruinsma in the first inning to open up the scoring. Bruinsma settled in after that, firing shutout ball for the next three innings which allowed his offense to come back. In the second inning, Jake Vera grounded out to score Shane Sullivan to cut the deficit to 2-1. An unearned run in the third inning tied the game. The following batter, Phil Russo, laced an RBI single during a long at bat to give his team the lead. In the fourth inning, Vera struck again with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-2, but the game was far from over. Serrato’s great afternoon continued with an RBI double to cut the lead to 4-3. Russo nearly hit a two-run HR, but it was caught at the warning track for a sac fly to extend the lead to 5-3 in the fifth. Brandon Lara-Mack, who made an outstanding diving catch to end the fifth led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to make it 5-4 and they tied the game up on a Nick Guajardo RBI double. The game nearly got away from the Privateers when Skylar Graff struck a batter with the bases loaded and two outs, but the umpire ruled that not only did he lean into the pitch but it would’ve been a strike which happened to be strike 3 and it ended the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Mosca played the role of hero and sent the ball over the fence in left field to deliver the victory for SUNY Maritime. Game 2 was a 12-5 victory for the Privateers. They briefly trailed 4-0 after a grand slam in the first inning by Cody Sullivan but the Privateers offense was relentless all game and posted 12 runs on 11 hits. They will be back in action tomorrow at Baseball Heaven against SUNY Plattsburgh beginning at noon.
