In My Own Words: Why I Decided to Join the Marines

Editor’s Note: Chris Deddo is a 2018 graduate of SUNY Maritime. He was a major reason in why the Privateers were able to turn a dormant program into Skyline Conference Champs in 2017. He participated in our 2018 Axcess Invitational, shortly after joining the United States Marines. The following words are his own…) In May of 2018, I found myself pinning on the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and becoming a member of the most lethal fighting force in the world. The United States Marines. The decision to become a leader of Marines was something that did not just happen overnight. It was a long process that started from when I was a little kid. I was fortunate to be surrounded by a family of people who dedicated their life to service. My father Michael Deddo Jr., retired from the NYPD with 32 years of ...

Get to Know Xavier Cruz

Xavier Cruz is a 2020 graduate of Kellenberg HS. He announced his verbal commitment to SUNY Maritime this week. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…   Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose SUNY Maritime? My college recruiting process was very long and stressful. At the beginning of my process, I had big name schools who were recruiting me from the end of my sophomore year. I developed relations with a lot of coaches and scouts. I had the opportunity to play all over the country and be seen on a national level. But as time went on, schools just went in a different direction. Other kids were getting r...

His coach, Charlie Barbieri had the following to say: “Travis was one of the highest-level recruits Maritime has ever had. He was originally committed to play baseball at West Point out of high school powerhouse Poly Prep, but when that fell through, we took advantage of the opportunity to get him into Maritime. Travis helped set the table and was an offensive catalyst for us out of the lead-off spot. USMMA Advances to Double-Elim With 10-1 Win over Reigning Champs

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Andrew Spinnenweber who was the winning pitcher in Merchant Marines 10-1 victory over Maritime. He struck out eight batters and allowed just an unearned run over 7 IP. @USMMA_Athletics #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/bQgwvSFSZb — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 2, 2018 In a win-or-go home scenario, the team with the dominant pitcher has a sizable advantage. It was Andrew Spinnenweber, junior RHP for No. 4 United States Merchant Marines Academy (USMMA) who was close to untouchable. The combination of their hard-throwing ace plus a potent offensive attack that featured 10 runs on 16 hits was too much for the reigning SUNY Maritime Privateers to handle. With 10-1 victory, they advance to the double-elimination tournament beginning on Friday, 12...

Farmingdale Splits Crucial Double Header On Senior Day

After nearly blowing an eight-run lead, Farmingdale hung on to defeat Maritime 10-8 in game one of the double header on senior day. On a day in which nine seniors were recognized for their Farmingdale careers, it quickly turned into a slugfest for the Rams. Maritime starter Dylan Clausen entered the day 4-0 on the season, but lasted only 1.1 innings after Farmingdale tagged him for eight hits and six runs. Ernie Geraci got the first RBI of the game and ultimately got the momentum going for the Rams. A throwing error by Clausen, a passed ball and an RBI single by Nicholas Soriano made it 3-0 in the first inning for Farmingdale. The Rams went back to work in the second, with Geraci knocking his second single through the right side for another RBI. A walk to Anthony Gigante put them up 5-0, f...

pic.twitter.com/hjn0FFGyLS — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 24, 2018 SUNY Maritime kicked off their season opener Saturday afternoon, splitting a double-header with John Jay College at Baseball Heaven. The defending Skyline Conference champions opened with a dominant 6-1 win. Senior starting pitcher Anthony D’Ancona secured the first win of the year for the Privateers, going for six innings and six strikeouts while allowing only 3 hits. Head coach Charlie Barbieri suggested that D’Ancona could have stayed in and finished the seventh inning, but the team wanted to give freshman reliever Dylan Clausen a chance to show his stuff in a non-pressure situation with a big late lead. Maritime kicked off the scoring early, plating two runs in the second inning and addin...

Brian McLaughlin Caps Decorated Career With a Legion of Awards

Coming out of St. John the Baptist, Brian McLaughlin was more than capable at playing at many major baseball programs. He spent four years playing under one of the brightest baseball minds on the island in John Habyan and had the type of power that coaches fawn over. He knew, however, that someday baseball might not always be there for him. He decided to go to the school that not only offered him the best chance to pursue a career in engineering, but where he could also play baseball so he chose SUNY Maritime. “I don’t regret a single day that I spent there,” he said in regards to his decision. “There was some good schools but Maritime represented something different. Maritime Wins First Skyline Conference Championship With 14-2 Win Over Mount St. Mary’s

When Charlie Barbieri was interviewing for the SUNY Maritime Head Coaching position, he was asked ‘when do you think you can compete for a championship?’ He responded with “three or four years.” Well, it turns out that statement was a foreshadow as they fulfilled his prophecy with a 14-2 victory over Mount St. Mary’s to win the program’s first Skyline Conference championship.
