Frank Catalanotto: Which Hitting Drills Work Best?

(Frank is a 14-year MLB veteran. He is a 1992 graduate of Smithtown East HS, where he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the MLB Draft. He compiled a .291 AVG in over 3,800 at bats. He gives lessons for Steel Sports Academy at Baseball Heaven.) by Frank Catalanotto The truth is that everyone is different, so when it comes to baseball and hitting drills, you need to find out which ones work for you and which ones don’t. The repetition of the drills is so important. Part of getting better is teaching muscle memory–especially for younger kids. Here are some that worked for me. One arm drills might be my favorite because each arm gets strengthened individually. I would get a small, lightweight bat and have someone flip balls to me. With just my front arm, I would take 10-1...

Stroman arrived and was greeted with a warm welcome from the crowd. He immediately spoke about his pitching philosophies. In the above video he demonstrates with his younger brother, Jayden, on the difference between missing your intended location by a fraction of an inch “when you’re facing big league hitters like Jose Altuve and Aaron Judge.” He also took the time to take pictures and sign autographs for the athletes before everyone split into groups and he worked on various drills. It was a season to remember for the 2009 Pat-Med g...

Process of the At Bat

By Anthony Iapoce (Texas Rangers Hitting Coach) There are three phases that take place for the hitter to prepare themselves before they are able to lay out their ‘A’ swing on the pitch they are hunting. From the time players walk into the stadium, they are ready for their daily routine to be ready for the game that day. Three Phases of At Bat: Pregame and Accountability In-Game and Attitude In Box and Confidence Pregame and Accountability is the foundation of any hitter’s success. The best hitters are the most accountable. They are the best at preparing for their craft. When players get to the field, the field thing they want to know is who’s pitching. This starts to get the hitter’s mindset going about what type of approach the pitcher will have that game. Qu...

Marcus Stroman Notches Career-High 12th Win of Season

Although the Toronto Blue Jays have suffered through a dismal season in 2017, it has not been the fault of their ace–and Long Island native–Marcus Stroman. Last night, he defeated the Kansas City Royals, 5-2, to notch his 12th win of the season. He fired seven innings, allowing just one ER with five strikeouts. The victory surpassed his 2014 win total of 11 during his rookie season. Additionally, he lowered his ERA to 3.01 and is closing in on his career-high in strikeouts of 166 set last season. Stroman is closing in on another milestone. He has thrown 191.1 IP. He set a career-high last season with 204.0 IP. This is critical in his arbitration case, because pitchers are deemed to be more durable and valuable when they can routinely eclipse 200.0 IP. He dodged a major bullet l...

How Marcus Stroman Went From League I MVP to World Baseball Classic MVP

(Photo Credit: Bob Mitchell) Having coached him for five years on the diamond and one year on the gridiron, not many people know Marcus Stroman–who was just named Most Valuable Player of the 2017 World Baseball Classic–better than Patchogue-Medford HS Head Coach Anthony Frascogna. Prior to gaining national acclaim for taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and leading Team USA to their first WBC championship, he was leading Pat-Med to league titles. But before that, he was the little guy that was turning everyone’s head no matter which sport he played. “I knew Marcus from when he was in elementary school because I knew Earl (his father), and I would see him on the fields,” said Frascogna. “I saw him throw a football 50 yards when he was eight-years-o...

Biggest Storylines Heading Into 2017

With the calendar turning to January, all eyes are on 2017 and baseball players are preparing to get back on the diamond. 7. What does West Islip do for an encore? They are coming off their second Long Island championship in three years. They return Jake Guercio (Fordham-commit), Greg Tsouprakos (Pace-commit), Joe Valentino along with a talented crop of freshman and sophomores such as Anthony Cinquemani. Still, it will be difficult for them to replace the production and consistency that Lou Antos, Ray Weber, Nick Valenti and James Kory provided over the past three seasons. There’s no doubt that they will be a playoff team, but it will be too tall of an order to expect another 20-win season. What Coach Shawn Rush has built has been pretty spectacular, but losing all those high-caliber...

Flynn + Fanti > Matz + Stroman?

Debates like this are fun because there won’t be an answer for at least another decade. Nevertheless, it’s something worth stirring up. Which duo will go onto have a better career out of the Carl Yastrzemski /Paul Gibson Award winners--Nick Fanti and Joe Flynn or Marcus Stroman and Steve Matz? The latter duo already have set a high bar. Stroman had a standout career at Duke University before getting drafted in the first round in the 2012 MLB Draft by Toronto. He won 11 games for the Blue Jays last season and was slated to start Opening Day in Yankee Stadium before tearing his ACL during Spring Training in a freak injury. All reports indicate he is back on track and will return to his previous form in 2016. Stroman’s 94-96 MPH fastball is a dominant pitch by itself but tha...
