A seven-inning pitcher’s duel kept the game scoreless for the majority of the game and made for a suspenseful ending. Q & A With Manhattan-commit Ivan Epps
LuHi has captured the PSAA Championship for the past three years. One of their main contributors this past season was infielder and pitcher Ivan Epps – who was named Playoff MVP this season and was also a starter last season. The hard-throwing righty recently announced his commitment to Manhattan College. I originally met Ivan back in 2016 while working at the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. Epps was one of the most impressive players in attendance as a 9-year-old, and the staff was forced to make him play two years up because of his talent. Sometimes you just know when someone is destined to be a great player, and now here we are 7 years later and he’s throwing 90 MPH with a 100 MPH max exit velocity. Much like the weather, it was a perfect first inning for the Crusaders, who batted around, scored 9 runs with the exclamation point coming on a two-run triple by Marcus Harrison to break the game completely open and LuHi never looked back. Long Island Lutheran took advantage of several miscues and walks by Portledge in the first inning and forced a pitching change after the 9th batter of the inning. Long Island Lutheran Poised to Repeat in 2022
by Daniel Lopes Coming off of a 2021 season in which they won the Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) championship, Long Island Lutheran and head coach Shaun Manning is pleased with the progress his squad has made in the last year. “I was really happy with what we were able to accomplish last spring with all the baseball we were able to play, between the Boys of Summer preseason league and the PSAA season,” said Manning. “We ended up getting in a bunch of contests, and it was really good for our kids.” This year’s team has almost perfect continuity from last season, as all but one player returns from the roster.
