It was the annual “142 Game” which is significant for USMMA because during World War II, 142 midshipman lost their lives. The United States Merchant Marine Academy has opened up its brand new field, Ray Bartoszek Field or simply nicknamed “The Ray”, for the 2021 season which kicks off today. The state-of-the-art facility is fully turfed, features stadium-style seating behind home plate as well as turfed bullpen and batting cage areas behind the 3rd base side dugout. The facility will also add a new scoreboard in the future. They will finally open up their 2021 season today against SJC-Brooklyn after a lengthy pause due to COVID concerns within the school. A former player under the Legendary Bob Hirschfield at NYIT, Bernardi accumulated over 160 innings pitched during his four year career as a member of the Bears. After his collegiate career, Bernardi pitched professionally for the St. George Roadrunners of the Golden League, as well as the New York Federals of the New York State league. Once his professional playing career was over, that is when Bernardi began on a path that would eventually change his life.
