GAME RECAP: Dean Ennis Fires 5.2 Shutout Innings, Longwood Defeats Walt Whitman

Final: Longwood 5, Walt Whitman 0 WP: Dean Ennis (5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 Ks) Urso: 2-R triple Moscatiello: solo HR pic.twitter.com/UZrts3GjF5 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2024 With an established team like Longwood and an up-and-coming program like Walt Whitman, it promised to be a great League I series to kick off the 2024 season. With the exception of two innings, Walt Whitman has been up to the task, but they have came up short both games by the score of 1-0 and 5-0. Longwood’s pitching has proven to be just too tough and their ability to put together rallies has been the difference. Walt Whitman sent their sophomore stud, Jaden Grose to the mound against Longwood’s senior southpaw Dean Ennis. The game was scoreless through three innings, as both pitch...

Last season was no different as they finished with a 16-8 record and a share of the League I title along with Sachem East and Pat-Med. The playoffs started off extremely well as they defeated Bellport and Ward Melville, before blowing a late lead to Pat-Med and losing, 12-7. Then, they had to face Ward Melville in a rematch on the road, and they lost 3-2 in extra innings. The...

GAME RECAP: Bryan Frascogna Drives in 2 Runs With Bases Loaded Hit, Josh Knoth Continues Brilliance

Even so, the Pat-Med Raiders found themselves in a 0-0 game against rival Longwood in the bottom of the third inning. Junior backstop, Bryan Frascogna, who spends most of the time doing thankless work behind the dish, took center stage and ripped a two-run single up the middle to score 2 runs. With Knoth on the mound, that was about one run more than they needed. Bryan Frascogna broke the scoreless tie with a...

GAME RECAP: CJ Forman’s Arm, Ben Moscatiello’s Bat Lead Longwood to Crucial Win over Sachem East

The Longwood Lions sent junior CJ Forman to the mound against a formidable Sachem East team that entered with a record of 7-1. Forman was outstanding, as he went the distance and struck out five batters in the victory for the Lions as they were able to create a tie atop the standings. Sachem East countered with Austin Barrett, and he was very effective in the early going as the pitchers traded zeros for the first t...

Longwood Hungry to Take Next Step

Longwood head coach Ryan McSherry following the playoff victory pic.twitter.com/ApxJZKSYaB — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 24, 2022 It was another strong season for Longwood, who finished with an overall record of 19-7 and lost in the Suffolk semifinals to rival Commack in a hard-fought three-game series. The Lions forced a do-or-die Game 3 with a 4-3 win on the road but ultimately lost 9-4 in the deciding game. From that team, Longwood sent an impressive 7 players onto play in college. That list includes Devin Montalvo (Colby-Sawyer), Ryan McCann (Manhattanville), Brendan Mair (Cazenovia), Liam Ryan (New Paltz), Jake Hall (Manhattanville), Rocco Hall (Manhattanville) and Mason Mehling (Muhlenberg). They had five All-League players; Devin Montalvo (All-County), Mikey Arbuiso, Lo...

Longwood Forces Winner-Take-All With 4-3 Win Against Commack

Longwood head coach Ryan McSherry following the playoff victory pic.twitter.com/ApxJZKSYaB — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 24, 2022 Well I guess they won’t want me covering any more Commack games. The Cougars, who had been riding an 18-game winning streak since their last loss on April 5 – which was when we last covered them – lost 4-3 to Longwood which forces a winner-take-all Conference I Championship today. Longwood brought their bats in the first inning against Stony Brook-commit Eric Mohr. Devin Montalvo led the game off with a walk and he was sacrificed to second base by Mike Arbuiso and he scored on Louis Kaleb’s RBI single to make it 1-0. Mason Mehling went the other way with a single and Preston Gerena scored Kaleb with an RBI single of his own t...

Longwood Enters 2022 With Talented, Experienced Roster

By Michael Malaszczyk Varsity baseball is almost here, and Coach Ryan McSherry of Longwood is gearing up for the 2022 season. Longwood is looking to be in a particularly good position to have a good season this year. Coach McSherry was very proud of what his team was able to do in 2021, in an interview with Axcess Baseball. Longwood did have a great season last year; they finished with a 14-6 overall record; their season came to an end against Commack in a Suffolk Conference semifinal. “Losing is never the goal, but there’s always a lesson to be learned,” said Coach McSherry. “The 2021 team was a very enjoyable and fun group to be in the presence of on a daily basis. We were happy with their attitudes and approach to everything.” In addition to that aforementioned lesson, with regard...

He was the first Longwood player to get drafted since Bryan Hansen in 2001. Ventimiglia, a 6’4 RHP, dominated League I as a sophomore in 2019 (0.28 ERA) and committed to Stony Brook following the season. His star has risen since and was considered one the top pitchers on Long Island entering 2020. After the cancellation of the season, he was able to put together a huge summer pitching for LI Titans-Quattrini – part of a vaunted staff with JT Raab and Jacob Steinmetz. The highlight of his season was...

Ventimiglia, Johnson and Rizzo Throw Gems on Day 2

What a thrilling day of baseball on Saturday it was for Day 2 of the Coaches Memorial Weekend hosted by the Town of Brookhaven. I bounced around from field-to-field but was locked in on Sayville-Westhampton Beach at 2pm, Longwood,-William Floyd at 4, then Newfield-Smithtown West & East Islip-Hills West at 8pm. It was a sensory overload of baseball and during one stretch in the evening there was just screaming and pure jubilation from all four fields at Moriches Complex. Just a few thoughts from the day: Sayville defeated Westhampton Beach 7-0, with Felician-commit Jack Turner starting and getting the win for the Golden Flashes. He is their staff ace and looked every bit that part even against a really tough lineup which will score a lot of runs this year – led by Jack Halloran, F...

Led by Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Longwood is Ready to Compete

The teams traded wins in the first two games before Connetquot captured the decisive Game 3 by the score of 2-0 to move to the Finals while Longwood had their season end with a record of 18-8. Heading into last year, they appeared to be in great shape once again. They were going to be led by a strong group of seniors which included: Kyle Allen (New Haven), Justin Classie, Nick Classie (Ulster), Derek Hardison, Ryan Kilcarr, Brian Monahan, James Myler (Bryant), Ty Orologio (Ulster), Ryan Owens, Brayden Pollock, D...

Bobby Molinaro, Babylon Defeat Center Moriches and Mike DeFilippo Outduels Ventimiglia

It was another entertaining day of baseball at Moriches Complex in day 3 of the Town of Brookhaven tournament. As I suspected, this quickly went from a recreational summer tournament to an intense revisiting of deeply rooted rivalries and I love it. The passion that was on display yesterday is not typical for a tournament in July that includes several players that have already graduated. So much so, in fact, that Friday’s rainouts initially meant no playoffs for the tournament but enough coaches voted for it so Monday will now feature semifinals and finals. At 3pm, I covered Babylon and Center Moriches. This is a rivalry matchup that has been completely one-sided in recent years due to the unprecedented success of Center Moriches. Babylon has always been a quality team, but last year...
