(Editor’s Note: This article was originally published on October 14, 2017) What an unbelievable experience it was for 50 young ballplayers this afternoon at St. John the Baptist‘s baseball clinic. Major League Baseball’s all-time save leader (652) and five-time World Series Champion Mariano Rivera spent nearly three hours signing autographs, speaking to the players, running drills and even providing personal pitching instructions. Everyone in attendance marveled at Rivera’s incredible down-to-earth demeanor despite the massive success he’s attained in his illustrious career. With rain in the early portion of the morning, the clinic began inside with Rivera taking plenty of time to sign an autograph and take photographs with every athlete. The other instructors–all with professional e...
Surprise! It was a very short stay on the taxi squad for Logan O’Hoppe. He’s starting tomorrow.https://t.co/DFHFsHYzST — Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) September 28, 2022 Huge news out of LA: Logan O’Hoppe (St. John the Baptist 2018) has been promoted to the big leagues by the Los Angeles Angels and will be starting tonight against the Oakland Athletics. O’Hoppe was traded at the deadline by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Los Angeles Angels for CF Brandon Marsh. The move was surprising at the time considering O’Hoppe had already established himself as one of the top 100 prospects in baseball and at the premium position like catcher nonetheless. After the move was completed, he was immediately regarded as the top prospect in the Angels system. Since that ti...

We spend a lot of time focusing on who the next big thing is that it sometimes comes at the expense of those that are currently one step away from The Show. With the book closed on the 2019 season, now is a great time to check in on the local players that played 2019 in affiliated baseball. For purposes of brevity, we will limit this list to those who are Long Island natives, not those that played college baseball on Long Island which eliminates several players that have played at schools like Stony Brook, Hofstra, St. John’s, etc. We used Baseball Reference to compile the data on players. Please note that players frequently walk away from the game after a few minor league seasons so this list does not include anyone that called it a career prior to the season. We will organize it by...
Add another accomplishment to his young career. Logan O’Hoppe (St. John the Baptist 2018) will appear in tonight’s New York Penn League All-Star Game at Richmond County Bank Ballpark (Staten Island Yankees home field). The game begins at 7pm, but the gates will open at 3pm for spectators. Expect a large contingent of friends and family for the wildly popular 19-year-old phenom. O’Hoppe has five home runs, 20 runs scored and 26 RBI through 44 games this season. He was recently named Philadelphia Phillies minor league hitter of the month after he crushed five home runs in one month. He is also regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the Phillies’ system. Fans will be treated to an incredible day, and that’s even before the first pitch is thrown. Former...
With the coverage that we’ve been doing of the younger age groups, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the players that are performing well at the highest levels. We announced the winners of the 2018 Axcess Baseball Awards and they accepted their plaques this week. Below are the winners of each. Axcess Most Valuable Player (College) Nick Grande (Stony Brook) Axcess Man of the Year (High School) Logan O’Hoppe (St. John the Baptist) Axcess Rookie of the Year Travis Zurita (SUNY Maritime) **Not pictured* Axcess Cy Young James Varela (LIU Post)
It’s been a year of accomplishments for St. John the Baptist grad Logan O’Hoppe. First, he led the Cougars to the CHSAA Championship, then he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft and finally he was named 1st Team All-American Gold Glove Award winner by Rawlings. The latter of which was awarded to the top prep catcher in the country. Only three base runners attempted steals on him this season. He can add one more award to his mantle, as he was voted the 2018 Axcess Baseball Man of the Year by his peers, garnering 62 percent of the votes, edging out Anthony D’Onofrio and Matt Hogan. Since getting drafted, he has further raised his stock. He posted a slash line of .367/..411/.532, proving he is not simply a defensive-minded catcher. He...
(Editor’s Note: Logan O’Hoppe is a 2018 graduate of St. John the Baptist HS. He helped lead the Cougars to the CHSAA Championship with a dramatic win over St. Dominic at Hofstra University. It has been quite a year for Sayville-native Logan O’Hoppe. The 6’3″ backstop led the St. John the Baptist Cougars to the 2018 CHSAA championship for the first time since 2014. From an individual standpoint, he was named CHSAA Player of the Year, he won the offensive triple crown, he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft and he took home a slew of other awards. He can add another to the mantle after Rawlings/ABCA named him the 1st Team All-American Gold Glove Award winner. It is quite an achievement for a player who burst onto the scene only one year prior with an outstanding showing in the Dominican Republic. His defensive prowess has been well-documented on here. He is considered the best defensive catcher coming out of the island ...
