Division-I Stony Brook ran their win streak to 10 games – all in conference play – so they are 10-0 in America East conference games – and 14-7 overall after sweeping UMASS-Lowell in a double header yesterday. In Game 1, UMASS took an early 2-0 lead against Sam Turcotte on a sac fly by Vinnie Martin and a an RBI single by Gerry Siracusa. As is usually the case, Turcotte buckled down and was lights-out the rest of the way while the Seawolves chipped away. Brett Paulsen’s sac fly got them on the board in the second inning and Shane Paradine‘s solo shot tied it up in the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh, Derek Yalon gave them the lead with a two-run double to score Paulsen and John LaRocca. Evan Giordano followed with a two-run HR to extend the lead to 6-...
There was not a cloud in the sky for much of Saturday afternoon. I spent the day at LIU, but there was quality baseball all over Long Island. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook continued their incredible run as they swept a DH from Hartford to run their streak to eight games. In Game 1, they fell behind early, 2-0, on a two-run HR by Tremayne Cobb Jr against Brian Herrmann. The lead did not last long, though. Chris Hamilton crushed a game-tying two-run HR to right field in the third inning. Brett Paulsen gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and they never looked back. They added insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Cole Durkan and a sac fly by Johnny Decker. Herrmann wound up going the complete 7 innings, allowing just the two earned runs with e...
Defense is absolutely critical in the game of baseball and that was evident on this afternoon as the LIU Sharks capitalized on five errors by the Farleigh Dickinson Knights which led to six of their nine runs. The Sharks came away with a 9-2 victory to pull off the weekend series sweep to improve to 8-4 on the season. Coach Dan Pirillo‘s team has looked to hit their stride early on this season, being unaffected by the unusual circumstances surrounding this season. Remember, this is a group that dealt with the sudden merging of two programs last year as well – so they have come to expect the unexpected. “With not having many non-conference games to start the year, we have to figure out our team on the offensive and defensive side on the fly,” said Pirillo. “The...
It was Good Friday for those who celebrate, but it was also a really good friday for Stony Brook, who kept their win streak going, LIU and USMMA on an exceptionally cold April day in the northeast. Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Hartford. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte started and earned the win. Hartford was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to second. He settled in after that and was lights-out moving forward. He went the complete seven innings, allowing just 2 runs (1 ER), allowing five hits and striking out six. Shane Paradine hit a sac fly to score Evan Giordano in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded walk by Evan Giordano tied t...
Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, with some parts of New York touching 80 degrees. It was a summer day with not a cloud in the sky and yet there was only three local teams in action. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook beat Albany in an absolute thriller, 14-11, in Albany in a game that took three hours, 30 minutes. Shane Paradine notched the go-ahead two-run double in the 9th inning to give the Seawolves a 13-11 lead, which they would hold on to. They actually led by 5 runs at two separate times. They led 6-1 in the fifth and 9-4 in the sixth following a solo shot by John Tuccillo. The problem was that the Great Danes offense was just getting going. They put up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth with the game-tying run coming on a sac fly by ...
Well, we waited long enough to kick off the Power Rankings season. But, there really was no choice since LIU didn’t open up until this past week. Now that everyone is in action, it’s only right for the first edition. We will just stick to Division-I schools, since Queens hasn’t started so I can’t really analyze them yet and none of the Division-III schools have begun. Without further ado, here’s how the local schools stack up. 1.Fordham (Record: 7-1, Trending UP) The Rams won two of three from Farleigh-Dickinson this weekend, and the loss was a 16-inning marathon that happened to be the second longest game in school history! On Friday, they combined to throw a 1-hit shutout in a 9-0 win with Matt Mikulski showing why he’s one of the top southpaws around....
by Tony Genualdo The Hofstra University Pride defeated the Long Island University (LIU) Sharks 9-5 on Wednesday, March 11, at University Field in Hempstead. Hofstra was looking to bounce back in their home opener after being swept last weekend by University of New Mexico Lobos. Despite scoring 34 runs in that series, they lost all three games in the bottom of the ninth inning. Meanwhile, LIU was doing the sweeping last weekend in their home opening series against the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks. Giovanni Ciaccio got the afternoon started for the Sharks as he hit the first pitch from Steven Boscia over the left field wall to give LIU an early 1-0 lead. A Carlton Harper RBI double later in the inning added one more run. Hofstra head coach John Russo pulled Boscia after just one inning ...
(Photo Credit: Rob Edwards/KLC Fotos) There’s a couple ways to look at this past weekend for the locals but I’m a glass-half-full person so let’s keep it positive. Let’s get to it: Division-I: 1.St. John’s (Record: 3-3. Trending UP) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 1-6, Trending Neutral) 3. Hofstra (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 4. Fordham (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 5. LIU (Record: 1-3, Trending Neutral) Breaking it down: St. John’s won two of three from Cal, no small task for a northeast team to travel cross-country and win a series on the West Coast in February. That was definitely the most positive storyline from this past weekend for the Division-I schools. Also, Stony Brook traveled to ACC Country and lost three games by a total of five runs. While there are...
(Photo Credit: USC-Upstate Baseball) While it was certainly not the best showing for Division-I baseball teams from our region, there’s two silver linings Sunday was much better than Friday or Saturday. Northeast teams are always behind their southeast and southwest counterparts in February. There’s simply no substitute for going outside and getting live at bats all winter. Granted, the weather this February was better than any since 2012 but it still is different than being outside everyday in Florida. In any event, here’s how the local Division-I teams stack up after one week. We are going to start Division-II next week and Division-III the following week. Please note that this ranking is based on how the teams played this past weekend not based on track records of past...
by Joseph Langan As opening weekend continues for the five local teams, only two have found themselves getting their first win of the season. While Stony Brook and Hofstra was able to get in the win column, three others enter Sunday looking to salvage a victory before they head back north. Here’s how it went down: (Make sure to check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here) Division-I: Hofstra and Purdue battled for the lead early in game one of today’s double header. Trailing 5-4 going into the top of the 6th, Hofstra’s offense exploded, scoring 7 runs in the top of the frame giving them the 11-5 lead. The Pride would only expand upon that lead and go on to win by a score of 13-6. Hofstra’s top of the lineup would provide a huge amount of the offensive production, accounting for 7 RB...
Although it may be hard to believe, we made it through another off-season. At least for Division-I college baseball fans. That’s right, across the country over 100 teams will kick off their season tonight. The northeast schools get to escape to the warm climate of the south to get their games in under the lights. In terms of the local programs, there will be plenty of action. Stony Brook, Hofstra, St. John’s, Fordham and LIU – who will play their first game since the merger of the two schools. Here’s a quick rundown: Stony Brook is down in San Marcos, TX where they will kick off a four-game set against Texas State. The Seawolves are the reigning America East Champs. Last time they played was in the Baton Rouge Regional in which they had the misfortune of having to f...
In what has become somewhat of a tradition, another LIU pitcher has received the Axcess Baseball Pitcher of the Year Award. Joshua Loeschorn joins Jake DeCarli (2015) and James Varela (2018) as recipients of the award given to the top collegiate pitcher on Long Island. While being regarded as the best in anything is impressive, doing so as just a freshman makes it even more remarkable. The N.J. native entered the season as a relative unknown but quickly put himself in the conversation of best pitcher in ECC. That is no easy task as the reigning ECC Pitcher of the Year and Axcess Baseball Pitcher of the Year shared a dugout with him. Varela virtually re-wrote the Pioneers record book for pitchers, but Loeschorn is certainly on the right track. He compiled an unblemished record of 10-...
