James Varela To Receive 2018 Axcess Baseball Cy Young Award

James Varela will receive the 2018 Axcess Baseball Cy Young Award for his outstanding performance this season. As a junior, he broke several program records. He finished with a record of 11-1, ERA of 2.40, 116 strikeouts over 101.1 IP. He also fired seven complete games (six consecutive) and three shutouts. He held the opposition to a batting average of .185. There were several criteria considered for this award: ERA Record Innings Pitched Strikeouts Level of Competition Historical Significance Conference Statistics For those who follow me on Twitter, you know that I am a proponent of disregarding win-loss record for starting pitchers in the Major Leagues. That does not apply to the amateur level because the elite pitchers typically go deeper into games than in the big leagues. Varela comp...

Long Island University to Merge Athletic Programs

Long Island University announced that it is combining the athletic programs of its Post and Brooklyn campuses beginning in September 2019. The news came as a surprise to the athletes of each campus. The Brooklyn campus had been competing at the Division-I level, but the Post campus is in the Division-II East Coast Conference for baseball. The switch certainly upgrades the profile of the school, which in turn will help recruiting, but in the short-term it spells bad news for several recruits and current players. Here’s what we know so far: -The move is effective September 2019, so they will compete in the ECC once again this year. -They will play baseball on the Post campus, which means the players currently living near Brooklyn will need to commute. -Several of the Division-II player...

Fall Ball Series Presented By The Greene Turtle: LIU Post

This is the second installment of our Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle in which we visit the local colleges and provide an in-depth, inside look at how their 2019 teams will look featuring photos, videos and interviews with players and coaches. Up next is LIU Post coming off a 29-20 season last season. I was bullish on LIU Post all last year, often featuring them at the top of the Division-II Weekly Power Rankings even when they weren’t playing their best. A major reason for that was their overall depth in the lineup but also a very talented pitching staff that featured some younger arms that were ready to come into their own. They made a postseason run but ultimately were defeated by Molloy, 11-4. They graduated three impact players; Rob Andreoli, Ramger Iglesias and ...

James Varela Continues Outstanding Season With CG Shutout, 4-0

Final: LIU Post 4, Molloy 0 WP: James Varela (9 IP, 0 R, 6 K) The Pioneers advance to face No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow at 12pm pic.twitter.com/WlG1LmE4rs — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 10, 2018 It’s been one of those seasons for James Varela of LIU Post. The junior RHP has been lights-out from his first start of the season. Today was no different in his complete game shutout over No. 2 Molloy in the first-round of the ECC Tournament. The Pioneers came away with the 4-0 victory, advancing to the winner’s bracket of the tournament. The Pioneers went down 1-2-3 in the first inning but the bats went to work in the second inning. Cleanup hitter Dave Brehm got things going with a single to left field. Michael Manzione was the next batter and he launched a deep fly b...

Fall Ball Series: LIU Post

Really good bullpen from freshman Joe Valentino pic.twitter.com/0fkn9Me6Tf — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 25, 2017 Our Fall Ball Series concluded this afternoon at LIU Post with the reigning ECC Champion Pioneers. I watched their full-team workout and it was very eye-opening. If there was any question that LIU Post baseball has come a long way over the previous three seasons, look no further than the newly-implemented rule by the school’s athletic department. On days that the men’s soccer team is playing, the baseball team is prohibited from taking batting practice on the field due to the amount of home runs that have interrupted the soccer games. The biggest culprits have been Rob Andreoli and Zach Fritz. Head Coach Mike Gaffney noted that in previous years t...

Jake DeCarli Fires Gem, LIU Post Advances With 7-1 Win

Final: LIU Post 7, Bridgeport 1 WP: Jake DeCarli (complete game) Thomas Asbaty: HR pic.twitter.com/zXjKItFtrg — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2017 Having a pitcher like Jake DeCarli (8-1) is a luxury that teams dream of. The senior continued his tremendous season with a complete game, allowing 0 ER with seven strikeouts to advance LIU Post to the winner’s bracket with a 7-1 win over Bridgeport. “Jake, he’s our leader, he’s our guy that’s been here for four years, we were very comfortable in the situation we were in today with him starting,” said Head Coach Mike Gaffney. “Even with letting up the run in the first inning, we still felt good and he threw a complete game. He didn’t let up a run after the first inning and he ...

Jake DeCarli Strikes Out 10 in 4-3 Victory over Southern New Hampshire

Jake DeCarli looked like the 2015 version of himself in last night’s outing against No. 6 ranked Southern New Hampshire. The senior RHP struck out 10 and allowed only four hits over 7.0 IP in the 4-3 victory. Dan Jagiello came on in relief and struck out all four batters he faced to record his first save of the season. The Pioneers’ offense was dormant for the first four innings, and they trailed 3-0 when they came to bat. They sparked a rally, with the first run coming on an RBI single by Michael Greene. Reigning All-Long Island outfielder Rob Andreoli smacked an RBI single of his own, as did Anthony Vaglica. The go-ahead run came across on a double play off the bat of Zach Fritz. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 2-3. They will be back in action today against Felicia...

LIU Post Ready to Take the Next Step

Last year’s record: 23-20 Key roster losses: Joey Arena (P), David Groeneveld (1B) Key additions: Anthony Vaglica (C/1B), Zach Fritz (INF), Kurt Rissland (P), Julian Arcos (P), Noah Lorenzo (P), Pat McCabe (P), Mike Stiles (P) Key roster returners: Jake DeCarli (P), Dan Jagiello (P), Rob Andreoli (OF), Joe Spitaleri (INF), James Varela (P), Thomas Asbaty (C) Kenny Daley (OF), Kyle Fagan (C/OF) The Pioneers fell just short of an East Coast Conference (ECC) tournament appearance in 2016 despite winning nine out of their last 10 games to finish the year. With some key returners coming back and a roster filled with high-ceiling talent, however, Pioneer nation is confident that the 2017 campaign will yield better results. Strengths The Pioneers’ strength is the culture that was developed under ...
