Most Division-I college baseball players have similar stories as to how they got recruited and chose the school. They follow a similar trend of first getting noticed at a showcase or travel ball event. If they play in a lot of Perfect Game events, typically several other schools will notice them. That player will mull their options over with their parents and ultimately make their decision towards the end of the summer or early fall entering their senior season. And then there’s Jack VanDoran. Jack received three offers during his high school career. None were of the Division-I variety. He turned them all down. It wasn’t until after he graduated high school did he make a decision and it was to attend a Division-II school and he wasn’t even guaranteed a spot on the varsity...
LIU Post captures the 2019 ECC Championship! pic.twitter.com/9Aq1bJyHvB — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2019 For the second time in the past three seasons, Coach Mike Gaffney and the LIU Post Pioneers captured the ECC Championship. They will now advance to the NCAA East Regionals next weekend. The location and seeds will be announced tonight at 10pm. This game was put to rest rather quickly. They added four more runs on a grand slam by Michael Manzione, his 10th of the season to go along with his 40th RBI. I...
(Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on April 27, 2019) In a crucial ECC double header this afternoon at Angelo Lorenzo Field, LIU Post and NYIT split the two games with NYIT taking the first game and LIU Post salvaging the split in the second. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: LIU Post sent ace James Varela to the mound against a high-powered NYIT lineup, who countered with Chris Mott. The Pioneers got off to a quick start in the first with a RBI singles by Dave Brehm and Anthony Vaglica. They added another run in the third on an RBI ground out off the bat of Jimmy Mendyk. With their ace on the hill, it appeared like that would be enough but Varela did not have his best stuff on this afternoon. The Bears forced Varela’s pitch count up early and Ben McNeill ripped a two-ru...
Yesterday was an incredible day of college baseball action. There was three local Division-II programs competing in the NCAA East Regional, four Division-Is playing for their postseason lives, one Division-III team in the NCAA Regional and a Junior College team hosting the Super Regionals. From 9am until 10pm, there was important games going on. This doesn’t even factor in the high school baseball going on. For purposes of brevity, we will focus on the college action. We covered the NYIT game at 9am in which their offense supplied the power to send them to Saturday’s Championship against Wilmington needing just one win to punch their ticket to next weekend’s Super Regional. The other big news of the day was LIU Post who squared off against perennial powerhouse Southern Ne...
The LIU Post Pioneers continued their dream campaign with a 7-2 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division-II East Regional over No. 6 Felician. The Pioneers, who are the No. 3 seed in the tournament but the No. 25 nationally-ranked team, got out to a quick 3-0 start in the first inning. After Giovanni Ciaccio led off the game with a walk, he advanced to third on an error and scored on a sac fly by Dave Brehm. An RBI ground out by Anthony Vaglica and a wild pitch extended their lead. With their ace on the mound, that was more than enough. Since beginning the season with two consecutive losses, Varela has returned to being one of the best Division-II pitchers in the nation. He struck out 15 batters–bringing his season total to an unbelievable 139–and walked just two batters...

The LIU Post won their eighth game in their last nine tries, and this was an important one–as they punch their ticket to the ECC Championship. They will now have to win just one of two games tomorrow to capture their second ECC Championship in the past three seasons. The offense came to play today, they put up 11 runs on 15 hits. The biggest contributor was Mike Manzione, who homered twice (his 8th and 9th of the season). They wasted no time in this one–as they posted a three-spot in the first inning against Bridgeport starter Chris Martucci. Chris Wasson got it going with an RBI double to score Giovanni Ciaccio. A sac fly by Dave Brehm scored Wasson and Manzione’s first home run made it 3-0. LIU Post LHP Noah Lorenzo continued his strong season. He fired scoreless inning...
In the first day of the three-day, double-elimination ECC tournament at Angelo Lorenzo Field, No. 1 LIU Post and No. 3 Bridgeport advanced to the winner’s bracket and will square off tomorrow at 12:30. No. 2 NYIT and No. 4 Queens will play an elimination game at 9:30am. The winner of the early game will play the loser of the second game at 3:30pm. Weather could be a factor as the forecast is calling for rain between the hours of 9am and 3pm. In the event of a rainout, Sunday will be used as a make up date. Here’s how it went down today: Game 1: Bridgeport got out to an early 3-0 lead on a solo shot in the second inning by Cory Listing, an unearned run and a sac fly off the bat of Vincent DeRubeis. The Bears got one one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Kieran...

Here’s Josh Loeschorn talking about his dominant complete game performance. pic.twitter.com/HORccuTwie — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 1, 2019 LIU Post has been on fire offensively lately. Coming into this game they were on a seven-game win streak, where they scored an almost unthinkable 121 runs. While the offense has certainly carried the team as of late, starting pitcher, Josh Loeschorn, wanted to remind everyone that the pitching isn’t lacking either, as he went to 4-0 on the season after today’s complete game performance. The win gave LIU Post a four-game sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas. Loeschorn was dominant all game. He carried a no-hit bid into the 5th inning. That same inning, he allowed his only run, but only after a balk brought the runner in from third. That was the...
Quite the opposite of Saturday’s result, LIU Post suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Assumption. They now stand at 9-7 on the season. Up next for the Pioneers is East Strousburg, who they play on Wednesday at 3 PM. Game One: From the beginning of this game, it seemed as if Post was in control once again. They jumped out to an early 2-0 start, thanks to RBI from Mike Manzione and Anthony Vaglica. On the mound, Mike Stiles got the start for the Pioneers and was fantastic. Through the first three innings, he struck out six batters. He finished going seven innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs and struck out eight batters. At the start of the 6th inning, Assumption got things started with a lead off single by Alex Richardson, who would advance to second on a throwing error. ...
In total, seven different colleges on the island played down south on Friday, with St. John’s getting postponed. It comes as little surprise that we continued to see Long Island teams struggle against schools who have been practicing outside all year long. There was, however, two bright spots that came in the form of double sweeps for the Long Islanders. With that being said, here’s a look at Friday’s results. Division-I: Coming off a strong series win a week ago, Stony Brook struggled on Friday as they fell to Southeastern Lousiana, 7-2. Although Stony Brook collected 10 hits, they couldn’t get things going with runners in scoring position. Chris Hamilton launched a solo home run in the top half of the 2nd to give Stony Brook an early 1-0 lead, but that was the onl...
