This is the second installment of our Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle in which we visit the local colleges and provide an in-depth, inside look at how their 2019 teams will look featuring photos, videos and interviews with players and coaches. Up next is LIU Post coming off a 29-20 season last season. I was bullish on LIU Post all last year, often featuring them at the top of the Division-II Weekly Power Rankings even when they weren’t playing their best. A major reason for that was their overall depth in the lineup but also a very talented pitching staff that featured some younger arms that were ready to come into their own. They made a postseason run but ultimately were defeated by Molloy, 11-4. They graduated three impact players; Rob Andreoli, Ramger Iglesias and ...

Following their 2017 ECC Championship, I was very confident that it was the beginning of a prosperous period for the LIU Post Pioneers. Not just because their current team included the reigning Axcess Baseball Player of the Year (Rob Andreoli), runner-up Rookie of the Year (Noah Lorenzo) and future ECC Pitcher of the Year (James Varela), but also because the residual effect that it would have on the current players on Long Island. Coming from someone who was in that exact situation, I can attest to the fact that there is absolutely a huge percentage of players on Long Island that are looking to a) stay close to home, b) play competitive baseball and c) get a scholarship to keep playing the game they love. For me, it meant attending Adelphi as they were in the midst of a 36-win season. For ...
On a hot & humid August afternoon, two players stole the show and stood above the rest in their respective brackets. Steven Rizzo (St. Anthony’s) captured the high school division and Vito Friscia (Hofstra) captured the college division in front of a packed crowd at Baseball Heaven. Rizzo led all high school hitters with 10 home runs, including seven in the first round. He defeated Matt Brown-Eiring (Connetquot 2020) in the championship round with two home runs. David Falco (Center Moriches 2019) smacked 3 HR, Brock Murtha (Saville 2020) hit two while Kyle Rausch (Longwood 2019) and Brown-Eiring each hit one. The college age players put on a clinic. St. Joseph 1B Paul Britt hit four home runs. He is a finalist for our Axcess Most Valuable Player for his amazing 2018 season for th...
Molloy extends their lead to 5-2 after the 4th on a Jack McCarty RBI single. pic.twitter.com/IXW6Sub5yI — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2018 The Molloy Lions defeat the LIU Post Pioneers 11-4 to advance to the ECC championship game. Molloy starter, sophomore Anthony Vano threw a complete game and freshman Matt Overton went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run and five RBI. “These guys have been battling all year,” said Molloy head coach Joe Fucarino. “They just played inning-to-inning very focused.” Molloy gets the last word against LIU Post, who defeated the Lions on Thursday 4-0. Molloy’s offense got hot in the third inning batting around. The Lions started the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles by Mike Wall, James Messina, and Jake Saltzman. Senior Angelo Navetta drove...

Pioneers took game one, 3-2, and game two by the score of 3-1. Senior Kevin Hiss turned in another solid performance tossing 8.1 innings giving up two runs and striking out two in game one. “It’s all about getting quality starts at this time of year against tough competition,” said Molloy head coach Joe Fucarino. ” “I felt great out there. They were a really aggressive team, so it was important for me to go out there and locate pitches,” said&nbs...
College baseball winds down its final weeks with these teams still going strong. Take a look at who excelled: Division-I: Hofstra: Hofstra defeated Charleston, 7-1, to help stop a six-game losing streak. John Rooney’s brilliant campaign continued Friday, going nine innings, giving up just five hits and one run in line for his sixth victory of the season against zero losses. His ERA drops to 0.97 for the season. Hofstra was able to grab their first runs of the game in the sixth behind a Mikey Riesner RBI sac bunt. That was followed up by an Austin Gauthier two-run single to give Hofstra the lead 3-1. They proceeded to tack on four more in the eighth, good enough to put them at 14-15 on the season and 4-8 in conference play. Fordham: Fordham was defeated, 5-3, in eleven innings against Georg...
This weekend featured some high-drama with some conference rivals i.e. Old Westbury-St. Joseph’s, Farmingdale-St. Joseph’s, NYIT-Molloy, LIU Post-Southern Connecticut and Stony Brook-Albany. While this was all exciting finishes, it makes the playoff pictures extremely murky as well as our Power Rankings; ESPECIALLY at the Division-III level, as my preseason predictions don’t look great right now, however, it doesn’t mean things can’t be completely different in one week. I will do a podcast tomorrow explaining this in depth more. We covered high school during the week, then we got back into the college action this weekend. Staying consistent with our format the previous two weeks, I will segment the rankings by division. Here’s my best guess. Division-I: ...
12 Teams went to work on a beautiful Friday the 13th. Take a look at those who stepped up: Division-I: Hofstra: Hofstra was defeated by Elon 2-1. John Rooney continued his amazing junior season by going seven innings, giving up zero runs and five hits. Hofstra tallied only two hits on the afternoon. A Garrett Stonehouse two-run double in the eighth proved to be the deciding factor in the loss. Hofstra drops to 14-12 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. Stony Brook: Stony Brook fell to Albany, 5-4. Albany jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Sea Wolves fought back in the third, scoring three runs in the inning, one of them courtesy of a Michael Wilson single. Albany would gain the lead back in the following inning, and later padded on another run in the fifth and ...
LIU Post pitched their way to two wins in a double-header against Queens College on Saturday, taking the first game 3-1 before winning the second 2-0. The first game was dominated pretty thoroughly by Post sophomore Noah Lorenzo. The southpaw went 8.1 innings and struck out five while allowing eight baserunners to reach. He left with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth after throwing almost 120 pitches, but redshirt senior reliever Brian Tinney came in and struck out the final two batters in emphatic fashion to give the Pioneers the victory. Lorenzo improved to 4-2 for the year on the win and lowered his ERA from 4.06 to 3.59. Zach Fritz’s patient effort at the plate was the catalyst for Post’s offense in the first game, as the first basemen went 2-3 with an RBI double, a run scored o...
