The Lightning had to overcome some early inning trouble to capture their victor. Starting pitcher George Rodriguez could only go a third of an inning after he allowed a hit and two walks to open the game. Troy Simpson had to come on in the first inning to get the Lightning out of the early jam and he struck out the next two batters to leave the bases loaded ...

Long Island Lightning Pound 24 Hits, One Win Away from LICBL Title

The Long Island Lightning took a 1-0 series lead in the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League championship Thursday evening in a quite lopsided affair. The Lightning defeated the Long Island NorEasters 19-7. The Lightning wasted no time putting a run on the board. After starter Patrick Quinn held the NorEaster’s scoreless in the top of the first, the Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. After leadoff hitter Joe Piscitelli popped out to first, two hitter Kyle Heiss roped a single up the middle. The next batter, Andrew Florides hit a tailor-made double play ball which was bobbled by the shortstop, allowing him to get to first and Heiss to advance to second. Both of them advanced a base after the next batter John Condon hit an opposite field single to left field. With ...

Lightning Shutout Thunder on their way to the LICBL Championship

Our Player of the game between the Long Island Thunder and Long Island Lightning is Kyle Heiss of the Lightning. Heiss went 3-3 at the plate with a HR and two RBI to help the Lightning win 7-0 and advance to the LICBL Championship. pic.twitter.com/wlPo6VMpbS — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 31, 2018 Two of the better teams in the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League squared off Tuesday evening at Adelphi with a trip to the Championship game on the line. The Long Island Lightning came in as the higher seed over the Long Island Thunder in the LICBL National division, and that order would stand true as the Lightning took care of the Thunder in a 7-0 victory.  For the Thunder, their best chance to put any runs on the board came early in this one as they had their leadoff batter, N...

Thunder Eliminate Redbirds with Combined One-Hitter

Valles slams the door on a combined one-hitter and the Thunder win 2-0. They will move on to the semifinals. pic.twitter.com/ov0UjIl1XS — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 31, 2018 The Long Island Thunder ousted the New York Redbirds 2-0 on Monday night to advance to the National Division finals of the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League.  Kieran McLaughlin, a rising senior at Adelphi, started for the Thunder and faced the minimum through the first four innings.  A one-out walk that was eliminated thanks to a double play was the only form of a threat the Redbirds could offer until the top of the fifth and by that time, they were already trailing by the games eventual final score, 2-0.  The Thunder did their damage in the bottom of third off Redbird starter Jake Bannon, whose sol...

Pizzingrillo’s Arm and a Big Second Inning Lead LI Nor’Easters to 9-0 Playoff Shutout

Joe Pizzingrillo talks about his six shutout innings in the Nor’easters 9-0 victory in the LICBL playoffs pic.twitter.com/vzMfDHGPDY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 30, 2018 With the bases loaded in the second inning and one run already in, Will Guteknust lofted a fly ball to deep left field. The left fielder turned tails and made an attempt to make a great play, but it landed just beyond his reach and rolled to the fence. With two outs, all three runners came around to score and with Guteknust’s speed, he was able to dive safely in to third base. The triple was the biggest hit of the game, opening up a 4-0 lead for the LI Nor’Easters which was more than enough for their starting pitcher, Joe Pizzingrillo. The RHP fired six shutout innings, allowing just three...

Stars Shine Bright at LICBL’s All-Star Game

Vinny Rice (Farmingdale State) went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple pic.twitter.com/95gis0yAw0 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 17, 2018 Don’t tell Mike Manetta it’s only an exhibition game. The SUNY Old Westbury rising sophomore hit a routine ground ball to second base with the tying run on third base and 2 outs in the ninth inning with the National All-Stars trailing 6-5 in the LICBL All-Star Game. The speedy left-handed batter busted it out of the box and beat the bang-bang play to tie the game at 6-6, which would ultimately be the final score. It was a microcosm of how the game was played, with both teams exchanging blows, big hits from both teams and no team taking greater than a two-run lead at any point. The hard-throwing Ryan Sandberg, who just transferred...

After starting the season 6-1, the Sound have now lost three straight, scoring a combined six runs in the three defeats. The Thunder’s bats started off hot, as they plated a pair in their first trip to the plate. Luke Scoggins and Mike Manetta drove in a run apiece to get the bats rolling. Lorenzo Russo started for the Thunder and after sending the side down in order in order to start the game, he gave up a solo shot to Mike Wall. He then gave up a walk and a single and l...

Long Island Collegiate Baseball League Continuing to Grow

For college ballplayers on Long Island, finding the right place to play in the summer can be a real challenge. Having to balance a work schedule with staying sharp on the diamond against top competition can be a lot more stressful than they initially thought. Fortunately, the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League (LICBL) has emerged as a great option for local college players. The league–which operates under NCAA rules–has 10 teams and they are all coached by college coaches (five are Head Coaches). Roster spots are assignment-only from college programs. The majority of the players are from Div-I or II college programs. “We allow five HS seniors per roster, all of which are committed to reputable programs,” said College League Coordinator Mike Atan. “We also ...
