Plainedge Captures The 2020 Nassau Varsity Division Championship

Plainedge hangs on with a 3-2 victory over Merrick pic.twitter.com/2u4fJrL9Xh — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 12, 2020 by Jared Valluzzi Unfortunately, there was no actual high school baseball season in 2020, but summer league is what these schools had left and when they got to the championship it didn’t disappoint. Plainedge High School was the location for this championship on a hot summer day as both Merrick and Plainedge came into the game red hot.  Entering this contest Merrick was scoring like no other during the playoffs. In the last 3 games the Colts scored 34 runs including a 13-1 victory over top seeded Garden City just a day ago. On the other hand, Plainedge’s pitching and defense is what got them to this point. Three out of their last five games they posted shutou...

Bay Shore Captures 2020 Suffolk Varsity Division

Coach Mike Herbst on Ryan Smerechniak’s outing and the offense in the 5-4 victory pic.twitter.com/72U10dsIo4 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 11, 2020 2020 took high school sports away from us, but thanks to the LI Boys of Summer, the class of 2020 was able to experience some semblance of closure to their varsity baseball careers. The Suffolk Varsity Division was put together featuring seven high school teams in (mostly) their entirety. With all teams making the playoffs, it did somewhat mitigate the impact of the 9 game regular season but still seeding does usually have value. Bay Shore flipped that narrative on its head by losing all eight of their regular season games before flipping a switch in the postseason and running the table in the three game playoff and defeat...

B1000 Sweep Double Header Over Team Steel In BOS PG Collegiate League

B1000 Seminoles outlasted Team Steel in both games of Thursday’s double header in the Boys of Summer/Perfect Game Collegiate League. Each game went six innings due to the time limit, but they both featured compelling action. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: Team Steel jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Matt Levine. Jake Woods got things going with a single to right field and a stolen base to get himself into scoring position. After two strikeouts, Matt Schmidt reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder to score Woods and get on the board. After a walk and a balk put two more runners in scoring position, Nick Doczy reached on an error by the second baseman to allow the second run of the inning to score. Levine settle down and induced an inning ...

Nick Giardino, Dodgers Nation Roll To 7-1 Victory

Final: Dodgers Nation 7, Black Diamonds 1 WP: Nick Giardino @liboysofsummer pic.twitter.com/YKSYtzM8MC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 5, 2020 When you pitch at a highly-successful program like Clarke HS, you need to utilize the summers to improve your command and repertoire of pitches. Rising junior Nick Giardino, younger brother of Chris, has been doing just that this summer while playing for Dodgers Nation 16U in the Boys of Summer. That was on display this afternoon in a 7-1 victory over the Black Diamonds. He was very effective, going five innings with his only blemish coming on a solo HR to left field in the third inning by Matt Marmo. “I was feeling great today,” he said. “I just wanted to hit my spots because I have a great defense behind me,” ...

LIB Tides Sweep Double Header on Hot August Afternoon at PAL Complex

This is what baseball people commonly refer to as the ‘dog days of summer’. The August afternoon games when the heat index is close to 100 and you are low on energy but the season is not nearly complete yet. That’s what both the LIB Tides and Tri-State Arsenal were dealing with on Monday afternoon in a Boys of Summer Perfect Game Collegiate League double header. Not a cloud was in the sky but the heat was oppressive. While both teams had to deal with it, it was the LIB Tides who were able to overcome it and come away with the sweep by the scores of 5-0 and 7-3. Here’s how it went down: Game 1 It was terrific pitching match up between Tim Mott (Molloy-commit) and Julian Minaya (SUNY Sullivan). Both pitchers wouldn’t give an inch early on, eluding some jams but ...

Big First Inning & Brandon Paider Carries LI Storm Past Red Devils

by Salvatore D’Onofrio The Long Island Storm scored five times in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 6-4 defeat of the Red Devils in a 16U Boys of Summer game last night at Cantiague Park. Brandon Paider took the bump for the Storm and was dominant in his three innings of work.  In the first, Brandon was able to get out of the jam by picking up Darlyn Liberato at second-base after his lead-off bunt. In the bottom half of first, the Storm bats lit up. The starting pitcher for the Red Devils Luis Reyes and his defense struggled early as he allowed a lead-off walk, two errors by the Red Devil defense, and two more walks. The Storm was able to take the lead 3-0 because of an RBI double from Will Pellegrino and an RBI single by Brian Baek. This was all for the startin...

Both squads were scoreless heading into the bottom of the secon...

CHSAA East Defeats West, 8-4, Behind a Balanced Offensive Attack

Familiar faces were all over on Monday afternoon at PAL Complex in a LI Boys of Summer league match up between Catholic League All Stars East vs West. Both teams brought their bats, but it was the East All-Stars who came away with an 8-4 victory after overcoming an early 2-0 deficit. The West All-Stats wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning against St. Anthony’s RHP Liam Adipietro. Leadoff man Chris Einemann (Kellenberg) reached on an errant throw by the catcher, stole second and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. After the next two batters were retired, a two-out walk issued to Kyle Sharkey and a stolen base brought up Maritime-commit Xavier Cruz (Kellenberg), who crushed an RBI double to right field to make it 2-0. He was thrown out attempting to ste...

Wild Back-And-Forth Affair Finishes In Tie Between Team Beast and HDMH

This was supposed to be a prosperous time for pitchers as hitters struggled to get acclimated back to game speed after a four-month hiatus. That was not the case today in a Wednesday matinee between Team Beast and HDMH in the Boys of Summer Collegiate League. The rosters were filled with recognizable names of recent high school graduates from Long Island. With the cancellation of elite collegiate summer seasons around the country, dozens of talented Long Island ballplayers were forced to play local. This adds up to create compelling summer league match ups like today. Chris Manzi took the hill for HDMH against a star-studded Beast lineup. They went to work early in the first inning beginning with a single by James Myler, who stole second to get into scoring position. St. John’s OF Ti...

Jose Almonte Throws One Hitter in New York Grays 7-2 Playoff Victory over the LI Strong

The New York Grays knew they needed a big performance from their starting pitcher coming into today’s quarterfinal game and that is exactly what Jose Almonte gave them. The hard throwing right hander came out firing against the high-octane offense of the LI Strong. The command of his fastball, coupled with a big sweeping curveball was able to keep opposing batters off balance, allowing only 1 hit which was a 2-run homer in the 4th inning. Almonte finished with a final line of 6.0IP, 10K, 5BB. 1H,  2ER and provided the Grays with the exact boost they needed to send them to the next round. The Grays bats got to work early, leading off the game with 3 base hits in a row. RBI hits from Faulsto Leonardo, Pepe Villamil, and Fordham commit Jason Mark gave the Grays a 3-0 lead in the first. The Gr...
