Re-Visiting The 2016 Top Prospects on LI List

It’s been five years since I really started following high school baseball here on Long Island. Back during the 2016, I tried to really immerse myself in the game and I was covering games 5 days per week – while bartending at Lombardi’s on the Bay on the weekend – so I did miss out on some action at times. But through conversations with high school and travel ball coaches, I attempted to compile a list of the Top 10 prospects on Long Island. This was not meant to be a prediction of who would have the longest and most successful career, but in that snapshot in time I wanted to gage who had the highest ceiling as a prospect. Like anything else in media, it got some attention from people that enjoyed it while others scoffed at it. I can laugh now, because I really had ...

Kyle Young Decides To Walk Away From the Game

Phillies prospect Kyle Young (St. Dominic 2016) is coming along well in his rehab from Tommy John. Yes, he is tall (7’0) pic.twitter.com/XI0jBanADh — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) December 16, 2019 Kyle Young stood above the competition on every field he was on. Literally, the 7’0 southpaw is the tallest player to play professional baseball and had dominated at St. Dominic HS in 2015-’16 prior to that. The southpaw was drafted out of HS in 2016 by the Philadelphia Phillies and has been terrific during his minor league career. He compiled a 2.92 ERA, 14-8 record, 166 Ks over 172.1 IP. Despite his long limbs, he displayed amazing control – walking just 27 batters and holding a 1.03 WHIP. He has decided to walk away from baseball. MILB listed it on their minor l...

How Are the Local Players Performing in Pro Ball?

It’s no secret that Long Island has proven its mettle in Major League Baseball by generating some legitimate talent in recent years. But what gets lost in the shuffle, however, is the dozens of players that are grinding it out in the minor leagues (and have been for years) for the chance to have their name on a big league scoreboard. Here are the current stats of the players currently active across affiliated professional baseball that have connections to Long Island. If I forgot anyone, please drop a comment to let me know. Several players were active until this season, for purposes of brevity we will limit this list to players currently active. Major Leagues, School, Year (Team): Marcus Stroman, Pat-Med ’09 (Toronto Blue Jays) 0-5 record, 7.71 ERA, 37.1 IP Steven Matz, Ward M...

Who’s the Next Long Islander to Make the Big Leagues?

There’s a very real chance that the presence of Marcus Stroman, Nick Tropeano and Steven Matz in the big leagues has paved the way for several more Long Islanders to eventually make the show. There’s a bevy of them in the minor leagues on any given year, but the current crop seems to have a few players that have not only youth on their side but also an upward trajectory. Here’s five players that could be the next to debut. Nick Fanti (Philadelphia Phillies) If I had to bet, the Hauppauge grad has the best chance of the bunch. He’s still only 20-years-old and already has three terrific minor league seasons under his belt, two no-hitters and an appearance in the World Baseball Classic. Over 189.2 IP, he has compiled an ERA of 2.28 and has a sparkling record of 17-3. H...

Introducing the No. 2 Prospect on Long Island

by Vinny Messana The comparisons are too easy to make at this point–how many 6’10” left-handed pitchers with a dynamite fastball can you think of? St. Dominic’s ace, Kyle Young, can only embrace it. “I think it’s one of the best compliments I can receive,” said the big lefty. “He’s one of the best pitchers ever,” he added. Now, while the HS senior has quite a ways to go to match the career resume of “The Big Unit”, to high school hitters in 2016–he is Randy Johnson. Young has led to the Bay Hawks to another great season, after finishing runners-up in the CHSAA in 2015 to Chaminade. Feeling disappointed with not coming out on top, he went to work this off season and wanted to improve in all aspects. He spent every...

Kyle Young Hungry to Avenge Last Year’s CHSAA Finals Defeat

CLICK HERE to check out National Scouting Report–the nation’s No.1 recruiting agency! Much like the 2015 Kansas City Royals were able to avenge last year’s World Series defeat at the hands of the San Francisco Giants, Kyle Young and St. Dominic’s will be looking for a similar path to the top. After losing a 1-0 heart breaker in Game 1 of the best of 3, they were shutout 10-0 in the series clincher. Young, a 6’10” left handed pitcher headed to Hofstra next fall, is prepared for his team to take the next step. “Making it to CHSAA finals was a fun experience at the time,” said the flame thrower, “but coming up short really burned a fire in me that I still have, and I don’t see it going away until we get back there next year and win,&...
