Miller Place Ready To Compete For League VI Title
by Zevan Shuster Heading into the 2020 season, Miller Place head baseball coach Ricky Caputo does not expect his team to miss a beat. They finished with a record of 16-4 in League VII, but they will move up to League VI this season due to enrollment. “I think we’re going to continue the success we had last year. Steven Matz. Marcus Stroman. Nick Tropeano. Anthony Kay. Joe Palumbo. Kevin McCarthy. Kyle McGowin. Those are the Long Island natives that are in the Major Leagues right now. They are all pitchers. In fact, it’s been 10 years since a position player from Long Island has played in the big leagues and that was Reid Gorecki (Kellenberg) with the Atlanta Braves in 2009. Fourteen of the past 15 players have been pitchers. That’s a trend that says our bats are lagging behind our arms. Miller Place ended 2018 with a sour-taste in their mouth and have high hopes for this season. They opened up 2019 on a great note with a 4-0 shutout over Westhampton Beach. After finishing 16-8 a season ago, Miller Place enters 2019 with expectations higher than ever. Returning virtually every one of their impact players from last season, they are extremely dangerous.
