1-2-3 first inning for sophomore flame thrower Andrew Koshy. Kellenberg coming to bat. The two teams are fired up pic.twitter.com/cJNppYy8ys — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 28, 2021 One of the top pitchers on Long Island is off the board. Kellenberg stud RHP Andrew Koshy announced his verbal commitment to Wake Forest late last night. Koshy was called up to varsity last season as a sophomore for the Firebirds. Truthfully, it was a no-brainer. Koshy would’ve posed a safety issue to JV hitters. He was sitting in the mid 80s last year, and since that time he has only improved. He’s now touching 90 and has a filthy slider to accompany it. We featured him as part of our “Up Next” series last November following his breakout season for Team Francisco Notorious 9 ...
Chaminade has captured the 2021 CHSAA Championship with a 4-1 win over Kellenberg ! pic.twitter.com/jmozQfolci — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 10, 2021 Under normal circumstances, you would get anxious when the potential tying run steps to the plate in Game 2 of the CHSAA Finals but with a team like Chaminade that lives and dies with pitching and defense, somehow the base runners just don’t feel that likely to score. The Chaminade Flyers defeated Kellenberg, 4-1, to capture the 19th championship in program history. They outscored the Firebirds 14-2 over the two game series and won four of five games against them this season. And this was with a team that was considered inexperienced by coach preseason and vulnerable by many. This game did have a much different vibe than G...
If you thought this was the year that Chaminade was going to be vulnerable – you were sorely mistaken. After capturing the CHSAA in 2019 and graduating that entire team in ’19 and ’20, they are now one game away from repeating as champs. They briefly struggled earlier this season as they stumbled out of the gate with a 3-3 record but now they have found their cruising altitude at the right time. The Flyers defeated Kellenberg in Game 1 of the NSCHSAA Championship Series by the score of 10-1 behind an all-around team effort and dominant pitching – which has been the hallmark for the program for decades. Coach Mike Pientkos’ squad excelled not only on the mound, but also in the field and on the base paths today; outplaying Kellenberg in every regard. They even g...
Final: Kellenberg 3, Chaminade 2 WP: Andrew Koshy S: Brendan McCann Phil Schurr go-ahead solo HR and Kellenberg locks up the No. 1 seed for the postseason pic.twitter.com/FwhMqRO936 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 28, 2021 When longtime Kellenberg head coach Chris Alfalla stepped down prior to the season, there was only one person that was best-suited to take over for the program and not have them skip a beat. That person is Pat Miles, who was currently coaching at the JV level for the program and was familiar with every varsity player on the roster. That provided Kellenberg with the unique advantage that very few teams on Long Island had – a head coach with knowledge of his players. With the cancelation of the 2020 season, most varsity coaches only had minimal interaction...
by Chris Sacchi After 22 years of coaching at Kellenberg Memorial High School, Chris Alfalla has handed down the reins to a former player of his, who is ready to continue the legacy. “It’s a dream come true,” said Kellenburg head coach Pat Miles. “As a 14-year-old kid going to baseball camp at Kellenberg, as an incoming freshman going into the year 2001, now coming full circle,” Miles said. “Being such a big part of my life, it’s certainly something that I want to continue with his philosophies and his connection to his players.” After playing for Alfalla on the varsity level, Miles moved on to play college ball at Molloy following the 2005 season. Miles says he came on board to coach at Kellenberg “pretty much right away” after college, and the relationship has continued during the ...
(Editor’s Note: This originally was posted on December 30, 2018) MIAMI, FLA– It was a classic height vs heart in the finals of the 15U at the Power Showcase in Marlins Park yesterday afternoon. Kellenberg sophomore, C.J. Picone, who is listed at a generous 5’5″ 145 lbs reached the finals for the first time in his Power Showcase career after two near-misses. Standing in his way was 6’0″ 175 lb Adam Parzych, who was the No. 1 seed. Picone put on a performance, smashing seven HR, including one at 389 feet into the bleachers in left-center field. You can watch the full video on our Instagram Story. “Of course I was excited–a little nervous. I was just happy to be out there. First time being in the finals. It was a great experience,” he said to me following his performance. Under many cir...
Adelphi has adjusted extremely well to the recruiting process during this pandemic. In addition to fielding a strong team in 2020, they now positioned themselves well for the future by snagging several of the top 2021 players on Long Island. They crushed the pitching recruits with John Rizzo, Jordan Falco, Phil D’Aguanno, Zach Rovner, Jacob Pedersen, Kendall Kendrick and John Carver. Now they have added to their position-player group with Kellenberg C C.J. Picone. Our followers may know him from the performance he put on at the Power Showcase in Miami back in December 2019 when he not only finished runner-up for his age group, but also raised $5,395 for charity by doing so. C.J. is the rare teenager that possesses leadership skills of a coach, a selfless attitude and the talent to be...
When it comes to being considered the best–the bar is set high. Over the course of the past 10 seasons, there have been undefeated seasons, there have been back-to-back state champs, there have been pitching staffs loaded with Division-I talent and pro pitchers. But there can only be one team considered the best. I have watched a lot of baseball, but I didn’t trust my own instinct so I solicited the help of some trusted sources to put together my definitive list of the best teams of the decade. To make it a bit easier, we narrowed it down to teams that have won a Long Island Championship, because plenty of talented teams have made it to the finish line only to come up short. We also did not list any school more than once on purpose because many of the back-to-back champions featured the sa...
Bases clearing triple Cameron Dunn and St. Anthony’s has a 4-0 lead in the first inning pic.twitter.com/EYUltOOBk4 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 22, 2019 There’s nothing quite as anxiety-inducing like elimination playoff baseball, but those tensions are certainly eased by 17-run outputs. For the third straight game, St. Anthony’s was able to stave off elimination and win to keep their 2019 season alive following last week’s first round loss to Kellenberg. Tonight they were able to get retribution with a 17-7 win over the Firebirds to continue to advance in the losers’ bracket. They will face a very difficult No. 2 seed St. John the Baptist on Thursday night in West Islip. Tonight they got to a huge start against Saint Anselm-commit Frank Roder. They took advantage of wal...
Not a bad start to the varsity career for University of Miami-commit Jason Diaz. The sophomore fired three perfect innings with seven strikeouts during an overpowering outing this afternoon against St. Mary’s in a mercy win for Kellenberg. The reigning CHSAA champs wasted no time getting the offense going with a huge first inning. After back-to-back walks to Terrance Murray and Andrew Steidle, third-place hitter Justin Renner brought them both in with a long HR to left to make it 3-0. After Nick Quatromani reached on an error and James May walked, Diaz reached on an error to load up the bases. Robert Chesney drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 and Brett Carpentieri increased the lead to 6-0 with a two-run double. Renner recorded his fourth RBI of the inning when he drew a bases loaded ...
