Farmingdale State College Head Coach Keith Osik notched career win No. 400 yesterday in a victory over Mount St. Mary’s. Osik is in his 18th season at the helm for the Rams, he took over in 2005 and has led them to 8 Skyline Conference Championships and one College World Series appearance in 2009. They also reached the NCAA Regional Finals in 2012 as they were one win away from getting back to the CWS in Appleton, WI. Osik was a 10-year big leaguer; debuted in 1996 at Shea Stadium and played right up until getting hired by Farmingdale in July 2005. It is a very interesting and unique path from the Major League clubhouse to a Division-III program that had been middling. Upon his arrival, Osik transformed the program into a Division-III powerhouse and they captured the Skyline Conferen...

The 10-year MLB veteran has seen it all on a baseball field and in his 17-year tenure as head coach. When discussing his freshmen class he said, “it might be the best depth we’ve brought in. It’s pushed the other guys,” he added. The Rams are coming off a 2022 season in which they finishe...
While I was down at Farmingdale State College today, the biggest change I noticed about the reigning Skyline Conference Champs was not the roster but the field they were on. Having played there during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, then being back each subsequent season I am very familiar with the campus and the stadium. So it was very noticeable when I first saw the brand-new turf on the field. This was “long overdue” in the words of Head Coach Keith Osik. They made several more upgrades, including each of the bullpens, adding protective fence in front of the dugout, a brand-new scoreboard, batting cages and even brought in the outfield fences. Osik joked that “when the score is 3-2 in the ninth inning we’d like our guys to know they can put the ball out”, but ad...
Vinny Rice was named Most Outstanding Player of the Skyline Conference Tournament pic.twitter.com/IWOlmeoLyL — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 7, 2019 For much of the past two months, Farmingdale State has showed that they were the top team in the Skyline Conference and they made it official by capturing the crown with an 8-5 victory over SUNY Old Westbury on their home turf. Senior Vinny Rice was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. He had a huge championship game beginning with a two-run double in the first inning to get the Rams on the board. “This means everything,” he said. “The best thing about going to Farmingdale is that there’s one goal and that’s to win,” he said following the game. “Time and time again we’re al...
In yesterday’s podcast, we had our biggest name guest to date. Although we have had legendary coaches and recognizable players, Keith Osik is a 10-year MLB veteran and has won 7 consecutive conference championships at Farmingdale State College, bringing them to a College World Series in 2009. You can listen to the full interview on our iTunes page, but if you are more of a reader–here’s some of the highlights. -He led Shoreham-Wading River to a New York State Championship in 1987, and called it ‘one of the best day of my life’. On the way back, he received a telegram that he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the MLB Draft. He called the entire bus ride back a ‘party.’ -He was courted by several elite baseball programs, notably Texas, Mississippi...
After entering the postseason red-hot and defeating USMMA in the first round, 4-1, No. 1 seed Farmingdale State was poised to return to the beacon of the Skyline Conference for the first time since 2014. Unfortunately, they did run into a dominant pitcher in Joseph Murphy that put them on the precipice of elimination, which ultimately came later that evening. They enter the 2019 returning all but one of their impact players, and they have an army of transfers that have all experienced some degree of success at the college level. “We feel we are much deeper this year than in previous seasons,” said Head Coach Keith Osik, now entering his 14th year at the helm, with seven conference championships under his belt. The offense starts with OF/DH Vinny Rice, who was a force on offense...
On this week’s podcast, special guest Sal Mignano joins host Vinny Messana to discuss the best teams in Class A Long Island history. Mignano retired second on the all-time Long Island wins list with 583, but has since been passed by Bob Ambrosini. He has seen plenty of the best teams, including some teams that he’s coached such as the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats in 1987 that were crowned New York State Class A champs. He’s also coached against the back-to-back NYS Champs from Bayport-Blue Point in 2013-’14 and Islip 2007-’08. He also coached in the Long Island Championship against the dominant Division teams. He provides unique insight as someone that has experienced these powerhouses first hand.
For a span of seven years, winning a Skyline Conference championship was an annual tradition for the Farmingdale State team. I was a part of two of those titles, and there was three more after that. Something strange happened in 2015–someone else was crowned champions (Old Westbury). Then it happened again in 2016 (St. Joseph’s). And again this past year (Maritime). As the calendar approaches 2018, the Rams will be looking to return to the mountain top, a spot that was so familiar for the program. They will have to do so without two of their critical players from last season; Matt Seelinger and Dalton McCarthy, who both graduated. Seelinger was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming the first player selected in the MLB Draft since 1979. I was down at their intrasquad today...
We had two very special guests on the podcast today discussing the best seasons in Long Island baseball history. Gregg Sarra, 32-year veteran reporter for Newsday and Sal Mignano (583 career wins) together have seen plenty of talented players on the diamond. We discussed who the best of the best are.
