Final: South Shore 4, Westhampton 2 pic.twitter.com/wiOsJZ0Aou — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 11, 2022 The Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League is officially underway, starting with an afternoon matchup between the Westhampton Aviators and the South Shore Clippers. The Hamptons League is an elite summer league for prospects nationwide, so it was a given that we were going to see some competitive baseball. The pitching matchup was as good as someone could have asked for. John Rizzo, who posted phenomenal numbers at Adelphi as a freshman with a 3.70 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 73 innings, took the mound against Cole Koeppel, who pitches for the University of Massachusetts...
“Bedlam in Garden City!” 🎙 pic.twitter.com/QSgF1oLDER — Adelphi Baseball (@AdelphiBaseball) May 11, 2022 Trailing 2-0 in the eighth inning and 4-2 in the ninth inning, Adelphi was facing the very real possibility of having their outstanding regular season minimized with a playoff loss at home against the College of St. Rose in a game in which their ace started. Fortunately for the Panthers, their squad was not about to let that happen. Mike Draskin (.405 AVG/1.267 OPS) came through with the clutch two-run single to score Matt Alifano and Jack Ryan to tie up the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. St. Rose answered right back with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth when LHP Steven Murphy hit the leadoff batter and walked the next. Freshman RHP John Rizzo came on in relief and St. R...
Adelphi RHP Josh Rovner discusses the Panthers’ double header sweep over Saint Anselm. Rovner went 5 IP, struck out 6 and allowed just one run. Panthers won Game 2 by the score of 13-1 pic.twitter.com/OF1jkyTrfr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 27, 2022 The Adelphi Panthers kicked off the official Bill Ianniciello era with a double header sweep against visiting Saint Anselm College on a typically cold February afternoon at William J. Bonomo Field. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: The Panthers sent ace Nic Luc to the hill. The fifth-year senior was greeted rudely by Ward Melville grad Brady Doran with a leadoff double. He came around to score on an RBI single by Zack Clough. That was all Luc would allow, though. He settled in and wound up striking out 9 batters ov...
East Islip 2, Sayville 1 WP: John Rizzo (CG) Ryan Ferremi: go-ahead HR in fifth inning East Islip advances to Conference IV Finals pic.twitter.com/x7gxliUSTD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 16, 2021 East Islip had every piece needed for a championship run in 2021 and they did not waste the opportunity. Assistant Coach Chris Padgur spoke to Axcess Baseball about capturing the team’s first county championship since 2006 and first Long Island Championship since 1991. The Redmen rattled off 10 wins in a row to end the season – as they peaked at the exact right time. They cruised past Harborfields in the Suffolk County Conference IV Finals by the score of 14-3 behind sophomore LHP Nick Rizzo. To reach that game, it was his older brother, John, who was lights out against ...
With the 2022 season right around the corner it’s time to start digging into some story lines regarding the season. As I mentioned in the last column, the 2021 graduating class on Long Island featured several players who have since moved onto college off of Long Island where they should thrive, but that doesn’t include the players that stayed on LI and can have an impact on local colleges. So this article we will dive deeper on five players that will help their teams win games in 2022. John Rizzo, Adelphi RHP Can’t look much better as a freshman than John Rizzo. Some familiar names were on display in today’s Boys of Summer-Perfect Game Collegiate League double header at Brentwood State Park between the Steel Collegiates and LI Strong. Despite fielding a team of primarily 2021 graduates, Steel looked like a team mature beyond their years and executed well in all aspects of the game. It starts with pitching and they performed in spaces. Here’s how it went down: Game 1 Tyler O’Neill took the mound for the Steel Collegiates. He is fresh off winning Nassau Conference II Pitcher of the Year for Mepham. He picked up right where he left off, but before he took the mound he was staked to a 1-0 lead. Joe Sanguedolce (St. Joseph’s) led off with a single to right and scored on Billy Kender’s RBI double. It was a huge day for Kend...
What a thrilling day of baseball on Saturday it was for Day 2 of the Coaches Memorial Weekend hosted by the Town of Brookhaven. I bounced around from field-to-field but was locked in on Sayville-Westhampton Beach at 2pm, Longwood,-William Floyd at 4, then Newfield-Smithtown West & East Islip-Hills West at 8pm. It was a sensory overload of baseball and during one stretch in the evening there was just screaming and pure jubilation from all four fields at Moriches Complex. Just a few thoughts from the day: Sayville defeated Westhampton Beach 7-0, with Felician-commit Jack Turner starting and getting the win for the Golden Flashes. He is their staff ace and looked every bit that part even against a really tough lineup which will score a lot of runs this year – led by Jack Halloran, F...
