Two Years Later: Looking Back on March 2020 and the Impact of COVID on Baseball

So much has happened over the past 2 years, but at the same time March 2020 still feels like yesterday. That dreaded month that started a cavalcade of negative news and heartache. From strictly a baseball perspective, so many kids had their high school baseball careers end without much of a warning. So much unfinished business on the field. Those dreary days of March that seemingly never ended, followed by the beautiful spring weather of April and May that came and went without as much as a home run, no-hitter or walk-off win. I wanted to get the perspective of a high school and college coach, so I asked two trusted people – John Galanoudis of Molloy and Matt Rocchio of John Glenn to look back on what it was like during the time period and how they’ve turned the page. “Lo...

This year, it was a celebration for the senior player (singular) that was a part of both of those teams. But it was no time to celebrate, as they had a game to win. The Center Moriches Red Devils, winners of the Class B New York State Championship in 2018 and ’19 entered the final day of the regular season n...

by Chris Sacchi The COVID-19 canceled 2020 high school season was a huge loss for seniors across the country. Many players had their final organized baseball game taken away from them. While this is a sad reality for thousands of young men, John Glenn head coach Matt Rocchio is doing a great job of finding the positive.  He tell his guys, “give everything you got like it’s your last game. Those seniors last year never got their last game. We had really great senior leadership last year,” coach Rocchio said. “Losing them for their senior year really hurt, but they left a lasting effect.” The 2020 senior class was led by current college ballplayers Dan Brown, at Pace, Aidan Desmond at Gettysburg and Matt Polestino at New Paltz. Q & A With Cole Lindquist

Smaller programs such as John Glenn rely on strong individual grad classes to prosper together and deliver a playoff-berth for the school. John Glenn would’ve likely made a playoff run in 2020 had there been a season thanks to seniors like Dan Brown (Pace), Aidan Desmond (Gettysburg) and Matt Polestino (SUNY New Paltz). While it is unfortunate that they didn’t get a season, they do seem to be on the right path considering some of the players they still have in the program for the next two years. One particularly exciting player is two-way player Cole Lindquist. According to his coach, he said “he can literally play anywhere but he has really been shining on the mound.” This summer while playing for MVP Beast 2022, “he has been lights out.” He compiled a ...
