Two Years Later: Looking Back on March 2020 and the Impact of COVID on Baseball

So much has happened over the past 2 years, but at the same time March 2020 still feels like yesterday. That dreaded month that started a cavalcade of negative news and heartache. From strictly a baseball perspective, so many kids had their high school baseball careers end without much of a warning. So much unfinished business on the field. Those dreary days of March that seemingly never ended, followed by the beautiful spring weather of April and May that came and went without as much as a home run, no-hitter or walk-off win. I wanted to get the perspective of a high school and college coach, so I asked two trusted people – John Galanoudis of Molloy and Matt Rocchio of John Glenn to look back on what it was like during the time period and how they’ve turned the page. “Lo...

Riverhead Snaps Losing Skid by Defeating the HCBL’s Best at Home

Riverhead earned a 6-5 win over HCBL-leading Westhampton behind 3 RBIs from Eduardo Malinowski. The slugger spoke with Justin Paura after his big game, and his teams got in on the fun, too. pic.twitter.com/V1Dixv95PL — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 15, 2018 This week hasn’t been quite what the Riverhead Tomcats (4-3-1) expected. After starting the season at a respectable 3-1-1, John Galanoudis’ squad dropped two straight games to the previously winless North Fork Ospreys on, one at home on Monday and one on the road Tuesday. However, the Tomcats did not let the losses get to them. It seems they recognize how long the HCBL season is and came into Thursday afternoon with a complete change of pace. Riverhead matched the amount of runs they scored in the two games against North For...

In 2015, John Galanoudis was the second leading hitter on Molloy. He smacked the baseball to the tune of a .318 AVG/.386/.403 triple slash line, drove in 29 runs, scored 30 runs and belted two HR. He also belted out a bunch of hits on his country album titled “Fire Still Burning“. Since that time, he has been busy furthering his career as a coach at St. Thomas Aquinas, but he was able to release a new single titled “Summer Ball”. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Has music taken a back seat to your coaching or have you still found a balance between the two? Music definitely took a backseat once I began coaching. I felt as if I found that balance as a player, but I also believe that it took me a little while to find that bala...

April 6 Recap

Photo Credit: Vinny Messana MLB wasn’t the only place to find action on the diamond today. He was relieved by Robert Rose, David DeJesus and David Montiverdi. They wasted no time in opening up a 1-0 first inning lead on a sac fly by Jon Cruz. They added two in the third on Cruz’s two-run single to score Anthony Ferrante and Adam Schuster. After being held scoreless for four innings, they broke it open with a five-spot in the eighth inning on a two-run d...

Molloy Trounces Caldwell

Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Who says offense is dead? For the second time in a week, a Long Island team has eclipsed the 20-run mark in a game. This time it was Molloy making easy work of Caldwell.Granted, Caldwell committed six errors which led to nine unearned runs but still the Lions smacked 20 hits–four of which were by Jack McCarty and three were by John Galanoudis— to prove the cold and rainy weather can not stop them. Believe it or not, they actually trailed 3-0 early in this game. Lions starter Peter Bellina struggled mightily with his control. He walked seven in two innings of work while allowing five ER. The Lions responded with two runs in the first, five in the second, six in the third and four in the fourth to open up a 17-9 lead after just four innings. Relieve...
