David Glancy’s Two-Run Shot Propels St. John’s To Sweep Over UMASS

David Glancy absolutely crushed a go-ahead 2-R HR to give St. John’s a 3-1 lead in the fifth pic.twitter.com/pPDDnOayo9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 28, 2021 Well that’s about as good as St. John’s could’ve hoped to begin the 2021 season. The Johnnies swept UMASS-Lowell this weekend by the scores of 2-1, 11-3 and 3-1. On Sunday, it was a far cry from Saturday’s slug fest, but they did use the power of redshirt freshman David Glancy to another victory. The powerful New Jersey-native stepped up with the game tied 1-1 in the fifth and absolutely destroyed one to left field to give the Red Storm a 3-1 lead and fire up his teammates. He looks to be a force in the BIG EAST for the next four years – having hit an impressive .423 during the ab...

Oceanside Enters 2020 in Unfamiliar Territory

by Tony Genualdo For the last three seasons, Oceanside has knocked on the door of being championship contenders.  Last season was no different. After finishing the regular season with a 13-5 record, their playoff run started off strong with a playoff series win against Farmingdale 2-1. But their run ended at the hands of Port Washington in the semifinals. They lost in 3 games and finished with an overall record of 16-8. Head Coach Mike Postillo knew that once October came around, it was time to get back to work. “For the months of October, November, and December, we focused on muscle building,” said Postillo. “For January and February, we do core circuit training. Beginning in December, we also begin skill practices on Wednesday nights, where pitchers begin to throw, and fielding and hitti...

Exclusive Q & A With St. John’s HC Mike Hampton

While it came as quite a surprise to many when longtime St. John’s Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer stepped down to manage the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Red Storm couldn’t have chose someone more prepared to fill in. Mike Hampton, who has been Blankmeyer’s assistant for 18 seasons, is well-suited to fill the shoes of the legendary skipper. Hampton is a 1994 graduate of Clemson University – named All-American in 1994 and drafted in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Reds. The program has reached great heights under the guidance of that duo, including nine 40-win seasons, four BIG EAST Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals in 2012. Under his guidance, the offense was ranked third in AVG in 2017 at .323 and finished top-10 in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The Red Sto...

Oceanside Counters Massapequa’s Late Comeback, Wins 7-6

As predicted, Tuesday afternoon’s game did not disappoint by any means. In a game for the ages, Oceanside topped Massapequa by a score of 7-6 to take game two of the series. This wasn’t a normal win by any means for Oceanside, this was the result of a hard fought battle. After suffering a tough loss on Monday, the Sailors wasted no time getting runs on the board. In the opening frame of the game, Austin Vlahakis started the Oceanside rally with an RBI single to left field. The next b...

Oceanside Edges Garden City 5-4 In A Thriller

Austin Vlahakis talks about how he worked his way out of a 7th inning jam to propel his team to victory. pic.twitter.com/cvmtqjvbPD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 4, 2019 On Thursday afternoon, Oceanside survived a late inning surge from Garden City, as they escaped with a 5-4 victory. In the opening frame of the game, Oceanside led things off with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Jake Lazzaro, Noah Eisel and Austin Vlahakis. The string of three doubles provided the Sailors with a quick 3-0 lead. Eisel came through again in the early innings for Oceanside as he launched a solo shot, providing them with a four-run lead in the 2nd inning. He finished 2-for4 on the day and also got the start on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings allowing one earned run. When the Oceanside bats wen...

Oceanside Hoping To Take the Final Step

For the past couple years, Oceanside knows they’ve had arguably the best team in the county. After finishing 16-2 in the regular season and winning their first four playoff games, it seemed destined for the Sailors to win it all last season. However, they came up short as they were swept by Massapequa in the County Championship. After appearing in the County Championship four out of the last five years and walking away with zero championships, Oceanside will be hungrier than ever this year to change their fortunes this season. How will they do so? Through experience and leadership. Led by an extremely talented group of seniors, Oceanside will use their past as a lesson to try and prevent defeat from happening again. Offensively, Oceanside will be led by a group of seniors that posses...

Insider Notes: HS Seniors That Are Making a Strong Case to Get Drafted

Every year around this time we think we have a good idea who will get drafted in June. The reality is that there’s no way to predict the future; players performances are wildly unpredictable and that’s not even factoring things out of their control. For example, I thought a player like Angelo Navetta would have gotten drafted had he performed exceptionally well in 2018. All he did was slug .616 with 49 RBI, showing that his 2016 season was no fluke and he is every bit as talented offensively as he is defensively. Still, he wasn’t drafted. Don’t tell me his size is a deterrent, because there were position players under 6’0″ drafted across the nation. Then there’s Matt Hogan, who I thought just needed to prove he was healthy to be considered a pro pl...

Where Things Stand With the Top Prospects in the 2019 Class

Yes it may seem like the 2019 draft is a long time away, but the reality for MLB organizations is that the preparation began immediately following the 2018 draft. Area scouts have had workouts and will continue to monitor their high-follows very closely from now until June. Below is a list of the eight players I believe have a chance to get drafted next year, and how they have evolved since I first watched each of them. Jason Diaz, RHP, Kellenberg Jason Diaz set such a high standard for himself that it was always going to be difficult to continue to outperform expectations. Having a 94 MPH at 16-years-old can be a blessing and a curse. From my perspective, I was blown away with him as a sophomore. His natural stuff, his composure, the similarities to Marcus Stroman, etc, put himself in eli...

The undefeated Sailors entered play with a perfect 7-0 record, but were facing their biggest challenge yet–facing the reigning Class AA Long Island Champion Massapequa Chiefs. The Sailors dominated in all facets of the game; cruising to a 13-0 victory with the exclamation mark coming in the top of the seventh inning on a long three-run HR by UMASS-Amherst commit Dylan Judd. The game was long over by that point, as the Sailors offense scored early-and-often against Chiefs’ RHP Christian...

Oceanside Season Preview

Typically when a team starts four sophomores in any given year, it’s rebuilding year. Especially when there’s only three seniors, as Oceanside had in 2017. That was not the case, as shown by their 17-5-1 record. What was the secret? Those four sophomores all stepped up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. First baseman Chris Siklas (.353 AVG), OF Leo Alvarez (.365 AVG), 3B Austin Vlahakis (.321 AVG) and 2B Jake Lazzaro (.305 AVG) were all major contributors as opposed to inexperienced sophomores. Lazzaro, also an All-County WR on the football team, played so well he received an athletic scholarship from St. John’s on the basis of his incredible series against Massapequa. Head Coach Mike Postillo called him “lightning fast” and he will slide over ...
