After finishing the regular season with a 13-5 record, their playoff run started off strong with a playoff series win against Farmingdale 2-1. While it came as quite a surprise to many when longtime St. John’s Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer stepped down to manage the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Red Storm couldn’t have chose someone more prepared to fill in. Mike Hampton, who has been Blankmeyer’s assistant for 18 seasons, is well-suited to fill the shoes of the legendary skipper. Hampton is a 1994 graduate of Clemson University – named All-American in 1994 and drafted in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Reds. Every year around this time we think we have a good idea who will get drafted in June. The reality is that there’s no way to predict the future; players performances are wildly unpredictable and that’s not even factoring things out of their control. For example, I thought a player like Angelo Navetta would have gotten drafted had he performed exceptionally well in 2018. All he did was slug .616 with 49 RBI, showing that his 2016 season was no fluke and he is every bit as talented offensively as he is defensively. Still, he wasn’t drafted. Oceanside Season Preview
Typically when a team starts four sophomores in any given year, it’s rebuilding year. Especially when there’s only three seniors, as Oceanside had in 2017. That was not the case, as shown by their 17-5-1 record. What was the secret? Those four sophomores all stepped up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. First baseman Chris Siklas (.353 AVG), OF Leo Alvarez (.365 AVG), 3B Austin Vlahakis (.321 AVG) and 2B Jake Lazzaro (.305 AVG) were all major contributors as opposed to inexperienced sophomores. Lazzaro, also an All-County WR on the football team, played so well he received an athletic scholarship from St. John’s on the basis of his incredible series against Massapequa.
