Joshua Loeschorn Receives 2019 Axcess Baseball Pitcher of the Year

In what has become somewhat of a tradition, another LIU pitcher has received the Axcess Baseball Pitcher of the Year Award. Joshua Loeschorn joins Jake DeCarli (2015) and James Varela (2018) as recipients of the award given to the top collegiate pitcher on Long Island. While being regarded as the best in anything is impressive, doing so as just a freshman makes it even more remarkable.   The N.J. native entered the season as a relative unknown but quickly put himself in the conversation of best pitcher in ECC. That is no easy task as the reigning ECC Pitcher of the Year and Axcess Baseball Pitcher of the Year shared a dugout with him. Varela virtually re-wrote the Pioneers record book for pitchers, but Loeschorn is certainly on the right track. He compiled an unblemished record of 10-...

Fall Ball Series: LIU Post

Really good bullpen from freshman Joe Valentino pic.twitter.com/0fkn9Me6Tf — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 25, 2017 Our Fall Ball Series concluded this afternoon at LIU Post with the reigning ECC Champion Pioneers. I watched their full-team workout and it was very eye-opening. If there was any question that LIU Post baseball has come a long way over the previous three seasons, look no further than the newly-implemented rule by the school’s athletic department. On days that the men’s soccer team is playing, the baseball team is prohibited from taking batting practice on the field due to the amount of home runs that have interrupted the soccer games. The biggest culprits have been Rob Andreoli and Zach Fritz. Head Coach Mike Gaffney noted that in previous years t...

Jake DeCarli Fires Gem, LIU Post Advances With 7-1 Win

Final: LIU Post 7, Bridgeport 1 WP: Jake DeCarli (complete game) Thomas Asbaty: HR pic.twitter.com/zXjKItFtrg — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2017 Having a pitcher like Jake DeCarli (8-1) is a luxury that teams dream of. The senior continued his tremendous season with a complete game, allowing 0 ER with seven strikeouts to advance LIU Post to the winner’s bracket with a 7-1 win over Bridgeport. “Jake, he’s our leader, he’s our guy that’s been here for four years, we were very comfortable in the situation we were in today with him starting,” said Head Coach Mike Gaffney. “Even with letting up the run in the first inning, we still felt good and he threw a complete game. He didn’t let up a run after the first inning and he ...

Angelo Navetta: These Are the Best Pitchers I’ve Faced in the ECC

(Editor’s Note: Angelo Navetta is currently a junior at Molloy College. He is coming off a spectacular 2016 season in which he was the recipient of Baseball on the Island’s Most Valuable Player Award. He is widely regarded as one of the best defensive first baseman and pure hitters in the East Coast Conference. The following words are his own) Frank Moscatiello (St. Thomas Aquinas) Frank is a high velocity, high effort kinda guy. This makes him tough to hit because you know he is not going to take a pitch off. You want to make him work and foul pitches off but when he pounds the zone with his fastball he is very tough to hit. His high velocity fastball is supported by his tight slider, which has great late movement. For me, that’s what makes him difficult because the slid...

LIU Post Splits Dramatic DH with Le Moyne

LIU Post and Le Moyne both braved the cold for a pair of games that were shortened to seven innings. Post won the first game 3-1, but fell in game two 5-2. The first pitch was at 10 am, while the sun was trying to peek out from behind the clouds. Jake DeCarli took the mound and shut down Le Moyne’s bats. His breaking ball was spectacular, time and again he would use it to get ahead of batters on the first pitch. DeCarli threw the complete seven inning game, giving up just one run, six hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters. Although, that’s not to say there weren’t any close calls, but whenever Le Moyne would threaten, DeCarli would settle in earning his second win of the season in the process. Offensively, Post was out-hit by Le Moyne–tallying only four hi...

Jake DeCarli Strikes Out 10 in 4-3 Victory over Southern New Hampshire

Jake DeCarli looked like the 2015 version of himself in last night’s outing against No. 6 ranked Southern New Hampshire. The senior RHP struck out 10 and allowed only four hits over 7.0 IP in the 4-3 victory. Dan Jagiello came on in relief and struck out all four batters he faced to record his first save of the season. The Pioneers’ offense was dormant for the first four innings, and they trailed 3-0 when they came to bat. They sparked a rally, with the first run coming on an RBI single by Michael Greene. Reigning All-Long Island outfielder Rob Andreoli smacked an RBI single of his own, as did Anthony Vaglica. The go-ahead run came across on a double play off the bat of Zach Fritz. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 2-3. They will be back in action today against Felicia...

Another Gem by DeCarli Leads LIU Post Past No. 1 Seed Dowling

The LIU Post Pioneers defeated No. 1 seed Dowling with an 8-0 shutout. It’s hard to call it an upset when they handled them three of four during the regular season and had the ECC Pitcher of the Year on the mound.Jake DeCarli threw a CG five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to lower his conference-leading ERA to 0.76. He allowed hits in the first, second, fifth and eighth inning but never more than two base runners in any inning. His record improves to 6-1 on the season. The offense was dormant against Brendan Butler for the first two innings but came alive in the third when Thomas Asbaty hit a two-run single to score Anthony Brunetti and Kenny Daley. They broke it open with three more in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, an RBI single by Vinny Iacono and double by Brunetti. In the fi...
