That appears to be the case for the St. Anthony’s Friars, who are flourishing in 2022. They defeated St. John the Baptist, 8-0, behind the second straight complete game shutout by Jason DeCaro – their ace junior who lowered his ERA to 1.42 with 31 strikeouts over 24.2 IP. He has taken that next step and become the ace they envisioned. DeCaro was lights-out, striking out 10, walking three and allowing just three hits (one was a misplayed double) over a complete g...

Led by Reigning Player of the Year, St. Anthony’s Hungry to Take Next Step

Fordham-commit Jack Vallario (St. Anthony’s 2022) is the reigning CHSAA Player of the Year. Compiled OPS of 1.253. Pro potential pic.twitter.com/B8OnvFZl60 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 1, 2022 Led by the returning CHSAA Player of the Year, Jack Vallario, St. Anthony’s is looking to take a step forward in 2022. They were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by St. Dominic, but they have their sights set on taking a leap this season. Vallario, a senior SS that is committed to Fordham University, is coming off an outstanding 2021 season that has earned him the respect of teammates and opposing players alike. Coach Paul Parsolano had high praise for his captain: “I attach other infielders to him – they follow his lead,” said Parsolano, wh...

What Are the Best Tools on the Island?

Baseball loves to talk about “toolsy” players. What does this mean? Well the five-tools are to hit, hit with power, run, field and throw. Players that have all five are said to be “five-tool players”. Very few of these exist in the game of baseball let alone on Long Island. So rather than trying to make a phony list of five-pool players on Long Island, let’s break the tools down. And we can even add pitchers for fun. Here’s what I got. This is based off my observations. Jack Vallario Commits to Fordham

St. Anthony’s leads 2-0 in the second pic.twitter.com/sWITdhcj6t — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2021 One of the big reasons that St. Anthony’s was able to revive their season in 2019 and make a deep playoff run – rattling off four straight wins in elimination games and reaching the CHSAA Finals was due to freshman Jack Vallario. While they ran into a great Chaminade team, they entered 2020 with a lineup led by Vallario, Marco Ali and Guy Calla as well as a pitching deep as deep as any on Long Island. With the cancellation of the season, they lost out on that great group and returned a very young team in 2021. They struggled, losing in the first round to St. Dominic, but that was to no fault of Vallari...

Stock Watch: Which Players Rose Their Stock the Most During the Season?

2021 has basically been the year of the retail investor. We’re all familiar with AMC and $dogecoin but you’re not going to find stock advice in this article. But similar to stocks, some players experienced a meteoric rise during the high school season. This isn’t about which players simply performed the best – this is about who performed the best relative to what the expectations were this year. Here’s a breakdown from my vantage point – and I’ve seen (almost) all these players in person. 2021s Coltrane Calloway, Bay Shore The Seton Hall-commit was outstanding all season in leading Bay Shore to the Suffolk II title game against Huntington. He was named Conference II MVP and had a strong case for the Carl Yastrzemski Award. At the plate, he batted a...

St. Anthony’s Hoping Strong Defense Up the Middle is The Winning Formula

One of the most critical aspects of a team is defense up the middle. Solidifying those portions of the field will often go a long way in run prevention and, ultimately, turning close games into wins. St. Anthony’s Head Coach Paul Parsolano, entering his second full season, sees this as his team’s strength citing his two senior catchers, Eddie Lippert & Anthony Capogna, as well as the double play duo of Jack Vallario & Alex Celeiro and CF Mike DeSantis. He stated that DeSantis may be their most talented defensive player on the team and will cover the most important position in the outfield. Vallario has already proven his mettle at the varsity level. Parsolano noted before he was called up, the team was treading water. “Once he got called up against Holy Trinity, h...
