Vinny Giambona Fires CG Gem in 10-1 Victory Over Wheatley

Sometimes it just takes a little tough love. Island Trees Head Coach Joseph D’Auria gave his team a stern talking to next to the dugout after they stranded the bases loaded with no out in the second inning and failed to score. Whatever he said paid immediate dividends as Island Trees woke up in the top of the third inning, taking a 2-1 lead on an E5 and an RBI ground out by Connor Waiting. Starting pitcher Vinny Giambona allowed just a run inthe second on a sac fly off the bat of Andrew Thaler. From that point on, he was untouchable. He finished with a CG, allowing just the one run, yielding five hits and striking out six batters. That’s the case for Island Trees entering 2021 after graduating eight seniors last year. Robby Stephens, who is committed to D’Youville College, can run it up to 86 MPH and put together a great sophomore season in 2019. He compiled a record of 2-1, with a superb 1.73 ERA. He allowed 26 hits over 33 IP with close to a strikeout per inning. “We are counting on him,” said Head C...

Island Trees Relying On Pitching Staff To Return To Postseason

When they started out 9-0, it appeared Island Trees was destined for a deep postseason run. Once the second half of the season began, unfortunately, things took a nosedive as they lost their first round playoff game to South Side by the score of 4-2. They finished with an overall record of 12-8 on the season. Head Coach Joseph D’Auria, now in his 16th season as head coach after seven seasons as assistant, noted that they began to struggle once their competition got stiffer from teams like Clarke, the eventual Class A Champion. Facing off against Clarke is nothing new for them, as they have had some classic showdowns over the past 15 years. Coach D’Auria noted that they defeated them in the County Finals in 2007, but were on the opposite end of it in 2009. They also made the fin...

Due to the rain out yesterday, both aces were handed the ball for the series opener. Brendan Turton took the mound for Clarke, and Greg Carita was on the bump for Island Trees. Through the first two innings, it seemed this was going to be a pitcher’s duel. Nine of the first 12 outs of the ballgame were recorded via strikeout. With the top of the lineup due up for Clarke in the third inning, they took advantage. CJ Cumbo began the inning with a lead off double. Tyler Cox stepped up to th...
