John Romano Ready for First Year as Huntington Head Coach

by Aaron Diaz Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. After a 1-19 record during the 2023 season, Huntington’s head coach, Bill Harris, decided to step down. John Romano was named head coach and he is preparing for his first season with the team. “With this being my first year in Huntington, it’s my job to change the entire culture, which we’ve done since day one,” Romano said.  Huntington didn’t have a big senior class but they did lose player Matt Gerardi in the process, being the MVP of the team last season.  However, as he shifts the culture, Romano has had time to see what kind of baseball players he has and he believes he has a lot of good ones. “When it was time for baseball workouts, you can tell we ...

Huntington Poised to Build On Learning Experience of 2022

In 2021, Huntington had the perfect recipe for ending their 61-year County Championship drought with a victory over Bay Shore before losing to Garden City in a extremely hard-fought Class II Long Island Championship at Mitchel Field. Incredibly, it was their first postseason appearance since 2005 and they were rewarded as 8 players garnered All-League recognition and Coach Bill Harris earned Conference II Coach of the Year. Truth be told, Huntington would’ve had a legitimate shot to win the year before, had there been a season in 2020. They had an exceptionally talented team that had all played together as sophomores in 2019. Coach Bill Harris noted that they lost some one-run games but played very well. When the Town of Brookhaven hosted their tournament in July 2020, they went toe-...

Huntington Coming Off First County Championship Since 1960

By Daniel Lopes In 2021, Huntington made history, making the playoffs for the first time since 2005 and winning the Conference II Suffolk County Championship for the first time in over 60 years. This success was rewarded heavily, as eight players earned All-League honors and head coach Bill Harris won the Conference II Coach of the Year. “Being an alumni of Huntington High School, I couldn’t be more proud of these young men and my assistant coach Rob Cappas for the great achievements we made last season,” said Harris. “We put Huntington baseball back on the map.” They will be without much of the core that helped them get to the championship last year, as nine seniors from last year’s team have since graduated. One of the biggest losses is Kyle Colleluori, who was a workhorse for the ...

Garden City Wins Long Island Conference II Championship, Beats Huntington 5-3

by Andrew Connors We spoke to Garden City Head Coach Dave Izzo about his thoughts following the 5-3 championship victory pic.twitter.com/knlgdqS1AT — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 20, 2021 There’s nothing better than championship baseball on Father’s Day, and Sunday morning proved that as Garden City and Huntington put on a show that didn’t disappoint. On a day that was as hot as Sunday was, you would expect some teams to come out a little sluggish but that wasn’t the case in this game. The Garden City Trojans jumped on the scoreboard shortly after the first pitch of the game was thrown. They scored two runs in the first inning and showed Huntington that they were going to be aggressive at the plate all day. Huntington didn’t just take the punch and roll over though, they fough...

Huntington Is Ready to Make Noise

One of the sure signs of a team having a breakout year is when they have many third-year varsity players that received playing team as sophomores and juniors. An even better sign is when they have fourth-year varsity players that received playing time for three years. The best sign is when they lost a bunch of one-run games the previous year as a young, inexperienced team. Huntington checks off all those boxes and for that reason, I think they will shock a lot of people and be a legitimate contender in 2021. They were going to be very good last year as well. After going 2-18 in 2018, they went 9-11 in 2019 and lost six one-run games – including a 2-1 loss to West Islip on the last game of the season which could’ve clinched a playoff berth. They are littered with talent. Look no...

Huntington Has All The Makings Of A Playoff Team

Although there was not postseason run, it was a season to be proud of for Huntington in 2019. And it could’ve been even better. They won nine games – just missing out on a playoff berth – which was their most in 15 seasons. Despite that, Bill Harris (fifth year head coach) came away a bit disappointed considering they lost six one-run games including their last game of the season, 2-1, against West Islip. “We got hit by the injury bug in the beginning of the year and the end and we missed the playoff by two games,” said Harris. It was a major step in the right direction, following a 2-18 season. They certainly have the makings of a playoff team in League III this year. Despite having no seniors, they are an experienced team since Harris called up nine guys  in...
