Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics The fans have spoken! After 748 votes, Dan Parisi, Dowling’s senior catcher, triumphed over a field of five other candidates to be named MVP of March. The players were Jack Parenty (Stony Brook), Angelo Navetta (Molloy), Anthony Bonilla (St. Joseph’s), Mike Marino (Farmingdale) and Steven Foster (Hofstra). After one day, Parisi had garnered 68% of the vote and appeared to be sailing to the finish line, but overnight the St. Joseph’s crowd went to work. Bonilla not only closed the gap but took a nine-vote lead at 161-152. The Dowling crowd must’ve took it to heart because Parisi came back with a vengeance. This time it was Molloy making easy work of Caldwell.Granted, Caldwell committed six errors which led to nine unearned runs but still the Lions smacked 20 hits–four of which were by Jack McCarty and three were by John Galanoudis— to prove the cold and rainy weather can not stop them. Believe it or not, they actually trailed 3-0 early in this game. Lions starter Peter Bellina struggled mightily with his control. He walked seven in two innings of work while allowing five ER. But, when your starting pitcher needs only 94 pitches to breeze through a complete game then it’s possible.Brendan Butler won his second game of the month for the Golden Lions who have now won six consecutive games and pushed their win streak to six with a 2-0 victory over Bloomfield College. Butler allowed only three hits, walked one while striking out five in the seven inning complete game.The offense was stagnant, but didn’t need to produce much. As mentioned earlier, great pitching duels are a staple of the LIU Post-Molloy rivalry. In the first game of the double header it was Alex Brosnan who was dominant. They followed up a 10-run output with a 23-run onslaught against Mount St. Vincent’s pitching staff.They had three separate innings of scoring five or more runs. Sophomore Tommy Zeigen, normally known for his defense, hit two home runs–including a grand slam–while driving in six runs. In total, the Panthers hit four home runs. They were victorious 10-1.Only two opposing batters did not succumb to Honahan once he got to two strikes. He also allowed only four hits to win his fourth game of the season before April 1.The offense struck early and often. They scored two runs in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth innings. Catcher Cole Peragine led the way with three hits, one run and one RBI. Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Tommy Zeigen broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning with an RBI double to right field to give the Old Westbury Panthers a 4-3 lead over Mount St. Vincent’s. The Panthers added five more runs to put the game away and improve to 7-2 on the season.Tyler Kapela recorded the win with five innings, allowing three ER, four hits and three walks while striking out four. He was relieved by Vinny Bieniek, Nick Schoen and Justin Mize who combined for four shutout innings.The offense compiled 14 hits–Eddie Hernandez, Jonathan Pagan, Christian Faust, Michael Cardino and Zeigen all recorded two hits.Faust and Nick Yip both drove in two runs.The teams will play again in the second game of the twin bill.

Despite only three teams in action, there was an extra inning game and a terrific pitcher’s duel. Division-I:Hofstra was defeated by Villanova 3-1. The offense only mustered six hits against opposing starter Josh Harris, despite drawing four walks and striking out only once. The Pride’s starter, Chris Bonk, threw eight innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out three.Villanova got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single. They added two runs in the sixth inning to open up their lead. The Pride’s lone run came in the bottom of the ninth on a sac fly by Eric Ferguson.The Pride falls to 7-12.
