Photo Credit: Farmingdale State Athletics A lot of publications name an All-American list. But the ABCA is the one that truly matters. Mike Marino, Farmingdale OF, was named to their third team. “Pretty crazy, honestly,” said the recent graduate from Franklin Square. “If you would’ve told me my freshman year that I’d be All-American, I would have told you that you’re out of your mind,” he added. Marino played out of his mind all season–he posted a triple slash line of .463/.539/.602 with 50 hits, 26 R, 21 RBI, 26 stolen bases and 10 doubles. He drew 17 walks against only 19 strikeouts. We wrote a feature on him which you can read here. The past two seasons, Farmingdale has gotten incredible production from a senior outfielder. How’s th...
Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics Daniel Zamora struck out eight over eight shutout innings and allowed just six hits as the No. 1 seed Stony Brook Sea Wolves downed Hartford 2-0 in the first round of the America East tournament. The offense was stagnant over the first three innings, but Andruw Gazzola, who was recently named to the All-Rookie Team, drove in Robert Chavarria with an RBI single to get the Sea Wolves on the board. In the sixth inning, America East Player of the Year, Jack Parenty, led off the frame with a walk. After stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch, Chavarria drove him in with a single to extend the lead to 2-0. That was all Zamora needed, he cruised through eight innings. He struck out two in the eighth to finish with eight strikeouts. In the ninth, Cameron St...
When you hear the diagnosis of ‘torn UCL’, you cringe. Not just because of the hard work it will take to get back but because of the waiting game.Months on months of watching from sideline and feeling helpless. For a high school pitcher, that means missing a season and not regaining the eligibility. After having Tommy John surgery on July 16, 2014, one would assume pitching in 2015 was out of the question.Joey Marzouk, senior at Hills East, found a way to have his cake and eat it, too. “Right from the start I knew I was going to be back for playoffs,” said Marzouk. But through the whole winter I worked 6 out of 7 days a week between Physical Therapy, and my throwing programs. My arm started to feel great and I just kept rolling in the right direction,” he added...
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz08fO5U7RE]If there was any question whether Pat-Med would have a letdown in the first round of the playoffs, that notion was dispelled quickly with a 5-1 victory over Northport.Brett Malm made a Major League-caliber diving play up the middle on the first batter of the game and in the bottom half of the first, Albany-bound Matt Codispoti deposited a long home run to left center field to give the Raiders a 2-0 three batters into the game. That was all Andrew Garcia would need–he struck out four in a complete game victory for his sixth victory of the season. In the third inning, the Raiders added to the lead when Adelphi-bound Brett Malm drove in Codispoti with a home run to the same spot the catcher hit it to in the first inning. In the fifth in...
Photo Credit: Old Westbury Athletics After waiting nearly 2 hours to begin the game, Old Westbury took down No.2 Baldwin Wallace University 7-5 behind Tim Ingram‘s gutsy 132 pitch, 14-strikeout performance. “I was a little tired,” said the senior right hander. “I threw a lot of pitches and every pitch was max effort because I was throwing against a very good offensive team,” he added. Fortunately, the offense came to play today. Old Westbury took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Dean Sheridan and Jonathan Pagan. Sheridan came around to score on a wild pitch. Ingram was downright nasty in the first four innings, striking out eight batters and allowing only two hits. The Panthers opened it up with three more runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI tr...
Photo Credit: Baldwin Wallace University Athletics Tomorrow night the Old Westbury Panthers will take on No. 2 ranked Baldwin Wallace University of Ohio in their first appearance in the NCAA Division-III Regionals since 2001. Where are they from? If you haven’t heard of Balwin Wallace–you are not alone, because neither have I. They went 31-10 this season in the Ohio Athletic Conference. That conference is incredibly loaded–they had three teams (Heidelberg, Baldwin Wallace, Ohio Northern) win 30 games and that doesn’t even count Marietta, who have 28 wins, won the conference and captured the Divison-III World Series in ’81, ’83, ’86, ’06, ’11 and ’12. So, yes it is a very strong conference. How do they match up with Old Westbury T...
Photo credit: Adelphi Athletics Prior to his first collegiate start on March 9, 2013, Jonathon Mulford was sitting in the dugout preparing himself to face a St. Thomas Aquinas team that is a perennial powerhouse.Starting a freshman against them could be a risky move, you would think. It’s easy to tell when they’re overwhelmed–you can see the deer-in-the-headlights look or lots of pacing around. This freshman didn’t look that way, but just to make sure Head Coach Dom Scala figured he would ask. “You nervous?” he inquired.“Coach, he’s a ‘Pequa boy, he will be fine,” said catcher Kevin Hutzel. True to his word, Mulford went out that day and shut down the Spartans lineup, throwing five shutout innings with seven strikeouts against zer...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana The book is closed on Hofstra’s 2015 season. They finished by losing two of three to James Madison University. The bright spot of today’s 23-7 loss was Brian MacDonald‘s three hits and Steven Foster‘s 2-for-2 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.Unfortunately, the pitching staff was not effective–allowing 15 hits and 10 ER. Thirteen of the runs were unearned due to an error by the second baseman in the third inning that opened the flood gates. On the season, the offense was certainly solid. They batted .274 with a .355 OBP. Foster led the way with a .351 average, .452 OBP, 35 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. Fellow freshman Mat Anunziata smacked five home runs and drove in 28 runs. They will look to improve on a pitching staf...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Thanks to a 16-4 conference record, Stony Brook has clinched the No. 1 seed in the America East tournament. They finished up a three-game sweep of UMass-Lowell today with a 9-0 shutout. Ryley MacEachern threw seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Nicholas DiEva closed the door with two shutout innings of relief. They wasted no time taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Toby Handley hit an RBI triple to score Cole Peragine. Jack Parenty drove him in with a sac fly and Casey Baker drove in Robert Chavarria with an RBI single. That was all the pitching staff would need on this day. Peragine, Baker and Andruw Gazzola all smacked three hits and Chavarria scored three runs. The offense compiled 15 hits in total and also drew...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Stony Brook swept a DH by the scores of 5-3 and 9-3 and have lowered their magic number to clinch the America East to 2. They lead UMBC by 3.5 games in the standings so any combination of Sea Wolve victories or UMBC losses that add to two will result in Stony Brook getting the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. There are four more regular season games to go. In the first game of the DH, Stony Brook was behind 3-2 after three innings, but tied it up in the fourth when Andruw Gazzolla started the inning off with a triple and he scored on Bobby Honeyman‘s sac fly. In the sixth, they took the lead when Casey Baker hit a one-out triple and he came in to score on a fielder’s choice. That was all the Sea Wolves’ pitching staff would need. Starte...
