It’s hard to believe but already four weeks are in the books for the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. The academy–now in its 42nd year–has been a staple in the Long Island baseball community for over 40 years. This past week was another exciting week for the athletes, as they had special guest Mike Gaffney–current Head Coach at LIU Post–who was drafted in the 13th round in 2003 by the Kansas City Royals out of NYIT. The Axcess Baseball Player of the Week was given to Leo Buzzeo. Below is a picture of him with the NYBA Director, John Russo. Not to be overlooked are he recipients of the Super Hustler Award, given to the ballplayers in each group that best exemplify the characteristics of a teammate. Group 2: Coach Timmes Patrick West Timmy Ezung...

This was the first of six weeks of the New York Baseball Academy (NYBA) at Hofstra University. The NYBA has been a staple of the Long Island Baseball scene for the past 42 years. After switching venues from NYIT, the camp has continued to feature instruction from the brightest baseball minds on the island, providing their knowledge to some of the top amateur talent in the region. Dozens and dozens of NYBA alumni have gone on to Div-I careers and two (Steven Matz and Justin Dunn) are currently playing professional ball. 2017 proved to be much of the same–which is why so many parents flock to send their young ballplayers to the NYBA. Just over the past three years since Axcess Baseball (formerly Baseball on the Island) provided coverage of the camp, instructors have included recognizable nam...

We will be awarding an Axcess Player of the Week for the duration of the six-week camp. The player will receive a plaque and be featured on our Instagram page with a description of the athlete’s achievements from the previous week. The camp will begin July 9, if you would like to register you can call 516-463-CAMP and Axcess...
Our @DigmiNation player of the game is Chris McLaughlin. He struck out seven as his Hitters Club Hawkeyes defeated Team Steel. pic.twitter.com/N4Z78UcXSQ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 19, 2018 Hitter’s Club Hawkeye’s 17u team defeated Team Steel 17u 5-0 at Hofstra University on Tuesday thanks to early offense and great pitching from their staff. It did not take long for the Hitter’s Club Hawkeyes to get the scoring started. They came to bat in the bottom of the first and scored three quick runs to jump out to an early lead. Chris Lydon got the offense started with a base hit to start the inning for the Hawkeyes and he came around to score the first run of the game on an infield error. With a man on, Matt LaSala drove in another run with a single to add to the Hawkeyes lead. ...
FINAL: Garden City 11 Bellmore JFK 3 WP – Robert Lucano Jake Fraher: 3-Run HR Garrett Going: 3 RBI’s pic.twitter.com/rC8So3ODFX — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2018 For the first frame of this ballgame, it seemed we had a competitive game on our hands. Fast forward twenty minutes, and things got out of hand quickly. The Garden City Trojans triumphed to an 11-3 victory over Bellmore JFK on Monday afternoon, securing them a spot in the winners bracket where they will have the opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals. Early in the ballgame, Hofstra-commit Robert Lucano found himself in situations with runners in scoring position, but continued to work his way out of them. He finished five innings on the mound without allowing an earned run. “I didn’t ...
An amazing afternoon for baseball on the island as these teams took the field. Check out who kept the momentum going and who is playing out the string: Division-I: Hofstra: John Rooney loses his first game of the season as Hofstra falls to Northeastern, 5-1. In what you consider a down start for Rooney, he still managed to go seven innings, giving up just two runs and seven hits while striking out seven. It took until the sixth inning for either team to score, with Northeastern third baseman Ryan Solomon uncorking a homerun to break open the game. Hofstra managed eight hits on the afternoon, three of them coming from DH Vito Friscia, including his sixth homer. The Pride are now 10-9 in CAA play and 21-17 overall for the season. Stony Brook: Stony Brook pounded out 12 hits and nine runs in ...
A solid start for Hofstra junior John Rooney was not enough, as the Hofstra Pride fall to Northeastern, 5-1, in game one of a three-game set. “I think [Northeastern] just outplayed us today,” said Hofstra head coach John Russo. Rooney went seven innings, giving up two earned runs and two walks (two HBP), while striking out seven. “It may be one of my favorite performances of the year, because he didn’t have [his best stuff] today,” said Russo. “What a bar we’re setting when everyone is a little depressed over seven innings and two earned.” Northeastern redshirt-junior Tyler Brown went seven scoreless innings, giving up six hits and struck out eight batters. The offense for both teams was limited in the beginning of this game as both starting pitchers were locked in a pitcher’s duel. Northe...
Behind junior John Rooney’s complete-game shutout, the Hofstra Pride defeated the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 9-0 in Hofstra’s CAA home opener. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and a seven-game losing streak against Delaware. “I thought it was literally a complete game played by us,” said Hofstra head coach John Russo. “I don’t know if we’ve played a better game.” Rooney needed just 102 pitches, allowing two hits and one walk on the day striking out 11. With that, Rooney lowered his season ERA to 1.29, and improved his record to 5-0. Junior catcher Matt Siedem went 3-4 with a double, a solo home run, three RBI and a stolen base. Siedem’s stolen base and home run were both his first of the season and fell a triple shy of ...
