by Frank Farnacci Vanderbilt-commit Matt Hogan led Half Hollow Hills East over Riverhead, 7-0, this afternoon with a dominating pitching performance. Hogan threw six innings of shutout ball striking out eleven while surrendering only three hits. “Another great effort from Matt today”, said Hills East Manager Tim Belz. “He had good command of his off speed and fastball. He got ahead. We made a couple of errors that could have resulted in runs, but he settled down and got us out of it each time”. Hills East set the pace with single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, John Son reached and advanced to second on an error. He scored on Vin Muraco’s single to left. In the third, Reis Henderson led off with a walk, stole second and advanced the third on Matt Hogan’s sac fly ...
Matt Hogan on his no-hitter against Smithtown West pic.twitter.com/FTpv502c4o Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 13, 2018 by Frank Farnacci Vanderbilt-commit Matt Hogan threw a no-hitter today, leading his Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds to a 5-0 win over Smithtown West Bulls. I was feeling pretty good, but honestly it was just the defense behind me today. Everyone was making plays. There were no errors in the field, Hogan said. His humility was admirable considering he struck out eleven with a powerful fast ball and a biting curve ball. Ive seen Matt pitch now for three, four years at the varsity level, said Hills East Manager Tim Belz. Today he took a little bit off, pounded the zone, got ahe...
by Frank Farnacci A chilly March afternoon did not deter Half Hollow Hills East’s Reis Henderson in his first varsity start as he led Hills East to a 2-1 victory over Smithtown West in Dix Hills today. Henderson persevered while working in-and-out of trouble through the first three innings hurling a two hitter with seven timely strikeouts over 5.2 IP. “He had a little bit of a high pitch count early as he worked in-and-out of trouble”, said Hills East Manager, Tim Belz. “He gave up only two hits which was phenomenal and kept us in the whole game. His strikeouts were in big spots and he really gutted it out.” The game started with Henderson walking the first two batters but then he settled down getting consecutive fielder’s choices and a foul out to keep Smithtown West off the scoreboard....

by Joe Litchhult (Editor’s Note: Joe is a 2018 LHP for Half Hollow Hills East. He is one of the top uncommitted players remaining in the class.) Christmas is my mom’s favorite holiday and my dad’s least favorite holiday. In spite of the love/hate relationship, a flurry of traditions have resulted. We spend the day together as a family in our home. My dad traveled to relatives every Christmas and hated having to leave all his gifts and toys as a kid on Christmas morning. When my parents got married, he vowed that once they started a family, Christmas Day would be spent at home and not sitting in traffic. He has successfully kept that promise for 21 years, since my brother James was born. That tradition continued when I came along four years later and continues to this day. If anyone k...

It’s been one of those seasons where nothing can stop Patch Dooley. Not even 30-40 MPH gusts of wind. “This is probably the worst conditions we played in wind-wise,” said Hills East Head Coach Tim Belz following their 7-4 victory over League III rival Smithtown West. “It’s tough when the ball is moving back and forth, it makes it tough to throw strikes. Another dominating outing from him–no-hitter into the sixth inning,” he added regarding his pitcher who is committed to the College of Charleston. We’ve given you the top story lines to follow this year. We’ve given you the top individuals that could get drafted. Now it’s time to take a stab at who will be the league champs when it’s all said and done. League play opens up on Monday. Class AA Player of the Year: Peter Theodorellis (Commack) Pitcher of the Year: Ben Brown (Ward Melville) League 1: There is a ton of parity in the league this year. With the emergence of Longwood last year, the expected improvement of Sachem East and the usual head-butting of Ward Melville and Pat-Med for the league title, things will get interesting. Brentwood could make some noise too with ace pitcher Justin Aviles getting rave reviews as a sleeper pick this year for All-County. Floyd has a pitching staff led by Robert Brust an...
