They played a thrilling extra-inning game against Bayport-Blue Point in which Ryan Levenberg hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning to spoil League MVP Rob Ray’s gem. With a year of Class A baseball under their belt, Josh Gutes‘ club enters 2019 as one of the favorites once again. While three new teams enter the Class A division this year (Eastport, Hills West and West Babylon), in their second season, the Hauppauge Eagles are ready to tak...

Final: Hauppauge 2, BBP 1 (11 innings) WP: Pete Sanderson Ryan Levenberg hits walk-off sac fly Rob Ray pitches CG pic.twitter.com/ANoE4lPiD0 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 21, 2018 Extra inning games typically do not feature complete games, and if they do, it’s usually not at the varsity level of high school in which a state-wide pitch limit is enforced. Robert Ray, Bayport-Blue Point‘s southpaw pitcher found a way to do so. The hard-throwing LHP pitched into the 11th inning against Hauppauge before sophomore Ryan Levenberg hit a sac fly to score Anthony Ferrara and give the Eagles a 3-2 victory. Offense was at a premium with two outstanding pitchers on the mound. Hauppauge’s Kevin Sambuco was extremely effective as well, allowing only an RBI ground out in the...

Kevin Sambuco Shines in 2-Hit Shutout Over Rocky Point

Final: Hauppauge 2, Rocky Point 0 WP: Kevin Sambuco (2-hit shutout) pic.twitter.com/CuxDipp61g — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2018 With the forecast calling for heavy rain beginning at 1pm, there was a 3-hour window to get in the game. Hauppauge starter Kevin Sambuco did it in less than half. The senior RHP carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but settled for a two-hit shutout in Hauppauge’s 2-0 victory over new League 6 rival Rocky Point, needing only 69 pitches to record 21 outs to improve the Eagles’ to 3-1 on the young season. He was starting opposite Bridgeport-commit Joey Grillo, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list last month. Grillo and Sambuco traded zeros for the first five innings; doing so in different ways. Hauppauge made ...

Matt Reistetter On Handling Adversity

(Editor’s Note: Matt is a five-year member of the Washington Nationals minor league system. He is a 2010 graduate of Hauppauge HS and was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra University in 2013. He has compiled a .258 AVG through five seasons.) by Matt Reistetter When my father passed away when I was 14–baseball saved me. When my girlfriend passed away when I was 16–baseball saved me. My mind is the strongest tool I possess. I can handle adversity. I can handle the grind. A season in the minor leagues is a grind. Especially during August. Every aspect of your life is strictly regimented to a set of routines you’ve established since Spring Training. Except on that day you get the text from the trainer, “No BP, no early work. Report at 6. Show and Go.” These days seem to always c...

Ryan Levenberg Outduels Brad Camarda, Hauppauge Wins 4-2

Freshman Ryan Levenberg stole the show in today’s League 5 match up between two perennial playoff contenders. Even more impressive, he out dueled 2016 Long Island win leader and Hofstra-commit Brad Camarda. Hauppauge came away with the 4-2 victory over Hills West. “Ryan did a great job of keeping them off balance,” said Head Coach Josh Gutes. “They hit some hard balls–just right at us, so we might’ve been a little lucky in that regard because Hills West is a fantastic team and they’re tremendously well-coached,” he added. The freshman Levenberg went six innings, fanned six batters, allowing just two ER on five hits to record the victory in his first varsity start. He gave way to senior Matt Overton who fired a 1-2-3 seventh inning with two st...
