For Hauppauge, they were trying to capture their first ever Long Island Championship, and for perennial powerhouse, Division, they were looking to avenge last years Long Island Championship loss, in which they led for most of the game, but ultimately lost to West Babylon. In their biggest game in program history, Hauppauge gave the ball to St. Thomas Aquinas-commit Matt Neglia, who has...

🚨 WALK OFF GRAND SLAM 🚨 Hauppauge junior Mike Oliveto crushes a walk-off grand slam as the Eagles overcame a late 7-2 deficit to win 10-7 and improve to 7-0 pic.twitter.com/aFHDWjUBaF — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 8, 2024 As far as endings go, it doesn’t get any more dramatic than a walk-off grand slam. Hauppauge junior Mike Oliveto was able to experience the pure jubilation of turning a deficit into a victory for the Eagles against rival East Islip, in the first game of a crucial three-game set which could determine Suffolk County League 5. “It’s feels great…it feels amazing,” said Oliveto, in the moments following his heroics. Clearly at a loss for words, the junior was overcome with excitement after getting mobbed at home plate by his teammat...

Where Are They Now Powered by the BK7 Brand: Chris Gannon

In what remains the last County Championship for Hauppauge, Chris Gannon put together one of the finest seasons in Long Island history. He played CF and batted leadoff – hitting .483 with 5 HRs, 10 triples, 7 doubles, scoring an incredible 55 runs, drawing 27 walks, 42 hits and drove in 32 runs. The Eagles went 21-5 for the second straight year and successfully defended their title as Suffolk County Champs, this time against future MLB draft pick Tim Layden from Deer Park at Ducks Stadium. Surely, a player of that ilk would go on to play Division-I baseball before continuing his career in pro ball. For Gannon, however, his true love was not baseball, but soccer. He also starred on the Hauppauge boy’s soccer team where he was a two-time Long Island Champ. Ultimately, those two y...

Gutes looked back on what he considered a strong season for his team. “Last year went well.” Gutes said. “We won a playoff game against Half Hollow Hills West. We got eliminated two games later by Kings Park. But in...

Special thanks to State Farm Ken Kortright Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.) It’s not often that a freshman is called up with two weeks left in the season and winds up winning you a playoff game. That’s exactly what happened with Hauppauge as freshman infielder Tucker Brown came up against Hills West RHP Ryan Muskopf and hit a go-ahead two-run single up the middle to break a 6-6 tie. Hauppauge held on to win by the score of 8-6. Hauppauge freshman Tu...

AMP Opens Up at LI Field House

Athletic Movement Protocol (AMP), one of the premier sports performance training facilities on Long Island has opened up a second location inside of LI Field House in Hauppauge. They moved in on August 1 and are open for business, which gives them a Suffolk location in addition to their existing space in Syosset. The space is 3,000 square feet and occupies the front of the facility, adjacent to the pitching mounds. AMP’s owner, TJ Lopez, a graduate of Marist University with a degree in Sports Medicine, had the following to say: “AMP was started on working with baseball and softball players. The first clients were either college or pro players. It was started at a multi-sport facility and we are getting back to our roots in that way. The quality of coaching we have – to pa...

Offense Powers East Islip Over the Top Against Hauppauge

by Andy Smith East Islip 11 Hauppauge 6 WP Nick Rizzo Veltman and Kneisel both had 3RBIs for East Islip pic.twitter.com/vbD8CTeub5 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 1, 2023 It was a cold, windy day but the offenses were hot and tallied a combined seventeen runs by a score of 11-6 with East Islip as the victor. The Eagles got to Nick Rizzo in the first inning and scored three runs off a two-run triple by first baseman Mike Oliveto, who was able to round home plate off a throwing error.  The Redmen responded in the bottom half of the frame by putting up four runs to give them a one-run lead. Left fielder Thomas Costarelli got things started with a lead-off single. Then, Alex Johnston reached first, which was followed by a base on balls to Rizzo which loaded the bases. Then following...

Hauppauge Looks to Rebound in 2023

by Nick Cipolla The Hauppauge Eagles had a rare down season in 2022. They finished with a record of 4-14 in league play. It was always going to be a challenge as they had to replace their top 5 hitters from 2021 due to graduation. Coach Josh Gutes seems to look towards the future after the tough 2022 season. “I think the bad taste of last year will actually be a positive for us heading into this year”, said Coach Gutes, “Last year was the youngest team we’ve had since I took over in 2014. We started five sophomores and a freshman. We had plenty of talented younger guys but we just didn’t have quite enough overall to be as competitive as we normally are. Our lack of experience last year will undoubtedly help us this year. We have 14 returning players. We don’t have a senio...

Chris Diesso Ready to Put Injuries Behind Him for a Breakout Season

Chris Diesso hit a walk-off HR in the bottom of the 7th to give Hauppauge a 4-3 win over North Babylon pic.twitter.com/mldNedVh6H — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2022 Injuries are a part of the game of baseball, but sometimes they can be especially cruel. We always hear about the success stories in amateur baseball but sometimes we get desensitized to the real emotional roller coasters that high school kids go through during their prime recruiting years. Hauppauge catcher Chris Diesso is a tremendously talented player that has been hit hard with some bad luck but is now entering his senior year of high school and is fully healthy for the first time in a while. He will be an X-Factor for the Eagles as they look to make a deep playoff run this year with a talented roster tha...

Lightning Forces Suspended Game Between North Babylon-Hauppauge With 3-3 Tie

With an impending storm in the forecast, North Babylon and Hauppauge attempted to get a full game in on Thursday afternoon, but lightning during the bottom of the sixth forced the umpires to call the game off – which will be completed on Monday at 2pm with a 3-3 tie. The game itself was outstanding, as the Hauppauge Eagles attempted to salvage the third and final game of the series against a talented North Babylon team. Hauppauge sent Matt Neglia to the mound against LHP Justin Arciniegas. Neglia struck out two batters in an impressive 1-2-3 inning against the high-octane North Bab lineup. Their leadoff hitter, Devonte Bailey, is batting .440, and Eric Schultiesz is batting .460. In the home half of the first, Matt Neglia singled and stole second. After Mike Oliveto flew out to left,...

Hauppauge Looking to Build on Last Year Despite Big Graduating Class

by Mike Anderson Hauppauge High School varsity baseball sought out to defend their 2019 league title in 2020, but ultimately never got a shot. Taking the field as a team for the first time in nearly two years, the 2021 Hauppauge Eagles did not disappoint, making the playoffs with a 12-6 record and finishing in third place in League III, only behind West Islip (13-5) and Newfield (15-3).  Varsity head coach Josh Gutes shed light on his team in an interview with Axcess Baseball, talking about what worked for them last season and what they look like right now coming into this season. He attributed his strong core of seniors from last year as the driving force to their successful 2021 season. “We had four sophomores on that league championship team in 2019 that got a ton of time. So, even thou...
