by Aaron Diaz Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. Here at Harborfields HS for “Corey’s Promise” fundraiser game between Harborfields and Cold Spring Harbor which will fulfill Corey Phelan’s wish of supporting families struggling with pediatric cancer. With just two wins on the year, head coach Ian Schneider is poised to bring the best out of his young team and try to compete in 2024. “It was a down year for us,” Schneider said. “We only had two wins on the season total. It was a young, new group that gave guys more opportunitie...
Ian Schneider has a very strong coaching resume for a young, ascending coach. The 2010 Mount Sinai graduate has had assistant coaching jobs at Port Jefferson, Hauppauge and Harborfields. After Casey Sturm stepped down following the 2022 season, it was announced that Schneider would be promoted to head coach at Harborfields. “I am incredibly excited and incredibly grateful for all the coaches that have helped me – Jesse Rosen, Josh Gutes and Casey Sturm. I’ve been shaped by a lot of great coaches that I played for such as Tom Caputo (Dowling) and Eric Reichenbach (Mount Sinai). I’m incredibly thankful for the time I’ve had with al the coaches that I’ve worked for and played for. I hope to take pieces from all of them to mold my own style.” Uncommitt...
Corey Phelan is our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game after throwing 5.1 IP in Harborfields’ 10-3 win over East Hampton pic.twitter.com/n1a7piO8op — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 24, 2019 It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Philadelphia Phillies minor leaguer and Long Island native Corey Phelan at the age of 20. It is truly devastating news, as the young Harborfields grad had dealt with cancer this year and unfortunately lost his battle. Phelan flourished two years ago and signed as an undrafted free agent out of high school after the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID. The southpaw made five relief appearances in 2021 and posted a stellar 0.93 ERA. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April 2022 and his teammates and friends rallied beh...
By Thomas Cregan Harborfields head coach Casey Sturm is looking to pickup right where they left off in 2021 and make another run at the County Championship in 2022. They embarked on a fantastic run in 2021 posting a 13-8 regular season record propelling them into the postseason. They would ride the wave until a close game in which they were ultimately defeated by East Islip in the County Championship. Coach Casey Sturm was incredibly proud of his group’s performance despite the loss. They had a great core group of players that had long been in the program who came together to make a tremendous run to the championship. Sturm described it as “truly a special run, and one of the most fun years that I have ever coached, that was an incredibly resilient group that always remained competit...
Entering 2020, Harborfields was in as good of shape as any team in Class A. They were loaded with top-tier talent at key positions including a loaded pitching staff. After three straight seasons of first-round postseason exits, they appeared like a safe bet to change that. The cancellation of the high school season did not do them any favors, especially graduating catcher Anthony Madigan, RHP Jack Greco and LHP Corey Phelan. The latter is now a professional pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies system after signing in August. The signing did not just catch me by surprise, but his own head coach. “It took me by surprise as well, in a good sense,” said Casey Sturm. “He came so far in just a few years since he got to us in high school. He looked great going into last season b...
2020 has taken a lot from us but not all hope was lot. Despite the truncated MLB Draft that eliminated all Long Island players from hearing their names selected, a few players with local ties have still made their way into professional baseball thanks to the post-draft signing period. Corey Phelan (Harborfields 2020) is the latest player to have his dreams of signing professionally come to fruition. Last week the hard-throwing LHP signed a professional contract worth $20,000 with the Philadelphia Phillies. They have done extremely well in locking up local talent thanks in large part to Sal Agostinelli‘s scouting eye and his ties to Long Island. He will join a list of LI’ers that include Nick Fanti, Kyle Young, Ben Brown and Logan O’Hoppe that are in the Phillies organizat...
After three straight seasons of first-round postseason losses, Harborfields appears ready to break through. Coach Casey Sturm says they “are ready to change that.” He will go to battle in League 5 with a roster filled with high-end players. He stated that outside of 2018, “this is probably the most talented team we’ve had, but at the end of the day you’ve gotta play.” The strength of the team is certainly the starting rotation. They return four capable pitchers, led by New York Tech-commit Jack Greco. He is entering his fourth year of varsity baseball and is one of the top pitchers on Long Island. “He has grown leaps & bounds each year,” said Sturm. “Last year was probably his best year. He can basically do whatever is necessary ...
Corey Phelan is a 2020 graduate of Harborfields HS. He is the younger brother of St. Joseph’s freshman, Connor Phelan, and the son of former Cold Spring Harbor coach, Chris Phelan. He announced his verbal commitment to Division-II powerhouse Flagler College yesterday. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Flagler? My experience with the college recruiting process was very difficult. I was blessed to have received offers from Div-I, Div-II and Div-III schools. They were all very good baseball programs and academic schools. I visited Flagler College when I was 14-years-old and fell in love with the school. I was blessed to receive an offer from Coach Barnett and I...
Corey Phelan is our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game after throwing 5.1 IP in Harborfields’ 10-3 win over East Hampton pic.twitter.com/n1a7piO8op — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 24, 2019 Coming off yesterday’s low-scoring affair, Harborfields knew they needed to bounce back with a win at home and they answered the challenge with a 10-3 win over East Hampton on a gorgeous day in Greenlawn. They fell behind 1-0 in the third on an RBI single by Kurt Matthews. The offense was dormant for the first two innings against East Hampton starter Colin Ruddy, but they got going in the third inning. Luke Mee hit a one-out single and moved to second on a walk to Jack Greco. Sean Keys tied it up on a bloop single to left field and James Romanelli gave them the lead with a singl...
Making the playoffs with three starting freshman is no small task for any team. That doesn’t mean it can’t have a painful ending, though. Just ask Harborfields Head Coach Casey Sturm, who watched his young team reach the postseason with a .500 record. They led 3-2 in the 7th inning with ace Jack Greco on the hill to slam the door. Robert Iadanza, however, had other plans. He hit a walk-off, two-strike grand slam to cap the 6-3 comeback victory for East Islip to end Harborfields’ season. “It was a painful way to go out,” said Sturm. “But I think that’s what’s motivating this group, it’s hard to replace 11 seniors, but their contribution to the program will help guide the up-and-coming crop of players,” he added. Leading the pack is...
