Tyler Henry spoke to Justin Paura following Riverhead’s 1-0 victory over Sag Harbor in the Hamptons League pic.twitter.com/tTWqeA11YH — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 13, 2018 Tyler Henry came to Long Island all the way from Middletown, Ohio, about 700 miles away, just to pitch for the Riverhead Tomcats (16-12-3) in the HCBL. He got roughed up in his junior year at the University of Dayton, posting an ERA over 11 in 10 appearances. His luck has changed this summer after earning a role as a starter in John Galanoudis’ rotation and picking up his first win by pitching eight scoreless innings against North Fork on June 28. The 22-year-old was on the bump at home against the Sag Harbor Whalers (15-12-3) on Thursday in a battle for third place in the league. He showed his stuff...
Luke Oliphant is named the MVP of the All Star Game. He spoke with Justin Paura following the game pic.twitter.com/fCdWA8uJTy — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 10, 2018 The atmosphere at the 2018 HCBL All-Star Game could be summed up with just one word: fun. “Everybody is doing really well out here and we’re having a lot of fun playing together,” Tyler Becker of the Westhampton Aviators said before the first pitch. “It’s been really great so far.” “It’s awesome receiving this honor and getting to play with some great players,” Long Island’s Marcos Perivolaris said. “We’re going to have fun and play the game it’s meant to be played.” “It’s really fun playing ball with guys from all over the country,” Perivolaris’ Road Warriors teammate Ben McNeill said. “I’m just looking forward t...
The defending Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League champions have been unbeatable as of late. Coming into a crucial doubleheader with the second-place Westhampton Aviators on Sunday, the Long Island Road Warriors carried a five-game win streak including a two-game sweep of the Riverhead Tomcats on Saturday. The flame still burns bright for Neal Heaton’s squad as the league-leading Road Warriors (18-5-0) take both games over Westhampton (13-9-0) on Sunday, 4-2 and 7-4. The first game of the doubleheader featured a pitcher’s duel between LI’s Dominic Savino and Westhampton’s Jonathan Cole. The only runs that took place with the two studs on the bump were off home runs. Tyler Becker opened up the scoring with a solo shot in the bottom of the first to put the Aviators up 1-0. The Road Warriors ...
Down in Texas, there are two types of young athletes: those who play football, and those who do not. Nick Thornquist was one of those athletes who chose to go a different route. “I guess just like most young athletes, I wanted to play every sport to find what I really liked,” Thornquist said. “I started playing baseball when I was around five-years-old and ever since then I would say the love of the sport just grew more and more over time. “Of course, all your high school coaches push you to try football out your freshman year. But after I played my freshman year I knew it wasn’t for me and I wanted to have more time to focus on baseball in the fall.” Though his parents thought he would have more success in the pool than on the diamond or the gridiron, Thornquist stuck with his passi...
Thomas Brady (Shoreham-Wading River 2017) of the LI Road Warriors spoke with Justin Paura following the 8-5 victory over Riverhead pic.twitter.com/XLXpeYGb41 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 27, 2018 We are slowly approaching the midway point of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League season. The real competitors start to emerge entering July, making every game more and more important. The Riverhead Tomcats came into Wednesday’s matchup with the Long Island Road Warriors only one point ahead of North Fork for third place. On the other side, LI needed a win to stay atop of the league after Westhampton defeated Shelter Island. Something had to give and each team showed out at St. John’s the Baptist Field. In the end, the Road Warriors (14-5) proved that they’re the HCBL’s best and...
The Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League is full of offensive talent and a lot of that talent is playing for the Sag Harbor Whalers. They have five players who have played in at least seven games that bat over .300, but it hasn’t shown in their record. The Whalers were 5-6-1 coming into their game against the first-place Long Island Road Warriors on Thursday, not to mention LI was carrying a four-game win streak. Luckily for the Whalers, all their bats showed out at St. Joseph’s Outdoor Athletic Complex and lit up the scoreboard for an 11-5 victory. Sag Harbor came ready to play right out of the gates, taking a lead in the first inning and never looking back. Jason Allbery and Nick Thornquist slapped back-to-back RBI singles, setting the stage for third baseman Connor Anderson. The Texas-na...
On Friday, both the Sag Harbor Whalers and the North Fork Ospreys had a double header scheduled, not against each other, at Baseball Heaven. The two teams met right after they played their first games. The Whalers lost earlier in the day to the Riverhead Tomcats and the Ospreys pulled out a victory against the Southampton Breakers. When the two teams matched up for their second game, both teams looked evenly matched throughout the whole game and eventually ended in a 4-4 tie after an inning of extra innings. The Whalers got the scoring started early as Sam Cachola raced around to score the first run of the game on the RBI double from Nick Thornquist. The Whalers were unable to add any more runs in the inning after a base running mistake by Thornquist that led to an inning ending double pla...
Riverhead earned a 6-5 win over HCBL-leading Westhampton behind 3 RBIs from Eduardo Malinowski. The slugger spoke with Justin Paura after his big game, and his teams got in on the fun, too. pic.twitter.com/V1Dixv95PL — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 15, 2018 This week hasn’t been quite what the Riverhead Tomcats (4-3-1) expected. After starting the season at a respectable 3-1-1, John Galanoudis’ squad dropped two straight games to the previously winless North Fork Ospreys on, one at home on Monday and one on the road Tuesday. However, the Tomcats did not let the losses get to them. It seems they recognize how long the HCBL season is and came into Thursday afternoon with a complete change of pace. Riverhead matched the amount of runs they scored in the two games against North For...
North Fork defeats Riverhead, 3-2, with JC Santini notching the go-ahead hit. He’s our @DigmiNation Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/V3mn546GYd — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 11, 2018 The first seven games of the North Fork Osprey’s season did not go exactly as planned. In fact, things went nearly as poorly as possible. Bill Ianniciello‘s squad opened up the summer with a 0-6-1 record, leaving them in last place in the league. Luckily for the Ospreys, it’s a long summer and thanks to the heroics of JC Santini, the comeback game starts now. The California-native supplied the go-ahead hit in the top of the eighth to give North Fork (1-6-1) a 3-2 victory over the Riverhead Tomcats (3-2-1). It was a pitcher’s duel early at Veterans Memorial Park. Austin Smith got the...
When asked what he is going to do on his team’s first off day since Saturday, Long Island Road Warriors catcher Thomas Brady quite a relatable response. “Honestly, I’m just going to rest,” Brady said. “I need to rehab my legs, we’ve had a tough stretch and I think we deserve this day off.” A day off is more than deserved. The Road Warriors (5-0) opened its season on Sunday and have played (and won) every day since. In the team’s latest victory, Long Island outplayed Sag Harbor (1-3) at home, winning 3-2. Brady continued his impressive start to the season, picking up two RBIs, throwing out two runners trying to steal second and earning our @DigmiNation player of the game. “I’ve really been seeing the ball well,” Brady said. “Anything I can do to help the team win sits well with me.” The Roa...
The Road Warriors improve their record to 4-0 with a 4-3 victory over Southampton Breakers. The @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Sal Zafonte. He spoke with Justin Paura following the game pic.twitter.com/hTkOOyiLSc — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 6, 2018 When you’re a champion-level team, you don’t always have to play pretty to win ball games. That was the case Wednesday evening for the defending HCBL champion Long Island Road Warriors (4-0). The squad opened up its season with three-run victories in each of their first three games. On Wednesday, the Road Warriors were only able to get four hits on the Southampton Breakers (1-2), but still squeaked out with a 4-3 win at home. Southampton looked destined to snap Long Island’s win streak early. Brian Picone and Ryan Hatten each...
