Where Are They Now Powered by The BK7 Brand: Greg Marino

(Editor’s Note: This is the eighth installment of “Where Are They Now” Powered by the BK7 Brand. You can check out the previous seven by clicking here. In this edition, we catch up with Greg Marino, a former standout pitcher at Centereach HS and Stony Brook University.) Standing 6’6 and throwing in the low 90s, Greg Marino was an intimidating presence on the mound for Stony Brook University. The hard-throwing RHP pitched three seasons for Matt Senk including starting an NCAA Regional game in 2019 against LSU. Following his collegiate career, Marino followed in his brother’s footsteps and played in the Frontier League with the Southern Illinois Miners for the 2019 season. But just like that, he decided his professional baseball career was done at the age of 22. Could he have continued? Sure...

Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle: Stony Brook

Nick Grande (Smithtown West 2016) takes a two-strike pitch and drives it for a single. He was named All-American in 2018 after compiling a .377/.468/.560 slash line with 32 stolen bases pic.twitter.com/nLyTqy8WDz — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 24, 2018 It’s been six years since their improbable run to the College World Series, but the “Omaha Effect” still has a positive impact on the Stony Brook baseball program. When you look around the field, you see talented players that may have previously opted to attend powerhouse programs in other parts of the nation had the Sea Wolves not boosted their value with that incredible 2012 season. Their run of sending players to the professional ranks continued in 2018 when 3B Bobby Honeyman and closer Aaron Pinto were s...

Recap of Stony Brook’s Scout Day

Certainly a potential draft candidate pic.twitter.com/d5UKWGTEoS — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 16, 2017 This afternoon I was at Stony Brook University to watch their Scout Day, which was attended by at least 20 MLB scouts from across the region. Stony Brook is one of the few teams in the region that consistently have their players selected in the MLB Draft. This year should be no different, as they have a handful of players that are draft-eligible. Additionally, they have younger players that could garner interest in the coming years. Below is my observations from the workout. Dylan Resk (JR) is a 6’1″ power-hitting outfielder that smacked 13 HR last year and drove...

Fall Ball Series: Stony Brook

Double barrel action with Brian Herrmann and Kris Killackey pic.twitter.com/zNqkpZNGmj — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 28, 2017 Strong defense and base running has been a hallmark of Stony Brook through out Head Coach Matt Senk’s tenure. Entering his 28th season at the helm, the Sea Wolves’ skipper’s attention to detail is pretty remarkable. While I observed their practice today, they spent roughly 30-35 minutes practicing every type of bunt scenario. No detail was too small to be accounted for. While he was monitoring the batters’ mechanics on their bunts, another coach was timing their sprinting speed to first and another coach was on the base paths directing the fielders. With runs at a premium in the America East, these defensive strategies co...

Marino Outduels Alberto

Photo Credit: Andrew Abreu In a battle between two terrific pitchers headed for Division-I baseball in the fall, it was Centereach‘s Greg Marino who came out on top. The 6’7″ right hander fired a complete game, striking out 12 while allowing six hits as the Cougars came out on top 6-3 against rival Newfield. Marino will be heading to Stony Brook in the fall. For the Cougars, Nick Kostulas went 3-for-4 with two runs and Austin Turner hit a three-run double. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 3-7 while the Wolverines drop to 5-3. Brandon Alberto entered the game at 3-0. He will be pitching for NYIT next year.
