They came into the season with a young group of players moving into Class A from county wide, but they stayed competitive in the games that they played. Coach Ciro Ambrosio reflects on last season. “We competed against the much stronger teams in our league, losing some close games because we were not as deep as them,” Ambrosio said. “In our league, it’s always an uphill battle.” They hope to battle again this season with their returning players. In dominating fashion, MacArthur shut out Great Neck South on Thursday evening by a score of 8-0. With the victory, MacArthur sweeps the series to start their season off 3-0. From the get go, it was obvious the Generals were going to be in control of this one. After a scoreless first inning, Jimmy Mahoney and David Johnsen got things started as they both drove in runs in the second inning to provide MacArthur with an early 2-0 lead. This was all the run support Kyle Gaertner would need. On the mound, Gaertner went the distance as he threw five shutout innings with six strike outs. The Great Neck South Rebels dominated last year, wining the county wide league with an 18-1 record, which was also the best record for any varsity team in Nassau County. With that considered, this year, they were ready to take a step up in competition. The coaches were ready, and the players wanted the challenge. This year the Rebels move up to the A1 league, where they will find the competition they were looking for. They have the talent to compete and win this year. Coming back for this year’s team is senior and all county catcher, Brett Figelman. He has already committed to Ithaca. He hit a ridiculous .529 last year, with 23 RBI’s.
